I mean, this gif is somewhat depressing bit it's a bit of a stretch to claim that it represents like the downfall of our culture, or that it says anything meaningful about contemporary gender roles.

Like, have any of yall ever met any little girls? They like to dress up and pose and play supermodel. They always have. When I was a little kid hanging with my girl cousins 20 years ago they would raid my aunt's closet for her heels and lipstick and have impromptu runway sessions. This is just how little girls play, dont read too much into it

As for women and the standards they face, it's fine for women to place standards on themselves, but men aren't allowed to.

I don't think the beauty standards thing is a modern thing. Nor is the drive for people to want to do well and sometimes compete. I'd be fine with my future daughter being hardworking and a little vain. If the alternative is her being insecure and wanting to be coddled 24/7, then it just sounds tiring

Narcissism is an inflated sense of self-importance. But given the world that we live in, where image is in fact very important and very valuable, and perfect photos are tremendously helpful, I don't think this kind of behavior can be said to be inflated.

It's an adaptation.

There's a problem where people are taking a definition and then broadening it until you can't fit every vaguely cucky thing into being a cucked dude.

In this case, it's narcissism. The left is making everyone "racist" or alt right. It's only when you start spouting off "raising alien foreign enemy babies" are you an actual racist.

Many scientific studies have specifically noted that narcissism is longer easily separated out from the general population.

It is a legitimate issue that we've normalized narcissism.

But, this is an interesting question, and one that has been posed for a few decades now, I think since the late 90s?

I personally don't think so. My sense of narcissism is that it is an important part of a healthy personality, though it becomes pathological when compensatory. The problem with generalizing this to the population at large is that the pathological kind of narcissism is usually a relic of early childhood, and has more to do with one's relationship with his or her primary caregivers (parents, in a nuclear family) than the culture per se.

Rather than a narcissism epidemic, I'd say it's a problem of propaganda, neoliberalism, a profound deficit in our critical thinking skills, and shorter attention spans due to the intimate relationships we now have with our smartphones and, by proxy, social media and the Internet in general.

Though, when it comes to social media, there is FOMO, which I don't know too much about, but would imagine this could instigate a kind of compensatory narcissism in most people, though it wouldn't be characterological, and therefore perhaps more of a symptom than a problem in itself.

Yes, I would say so due to the information their being fed from modern outlets. When it comes to which gender is more narccisistic, I'd say women since they are empowered so much and basically never are denied relationships and other things of the sort like men are. This also results in more entitlement to go with it. Ironic how woman call men entitled yet when they get rejected they do crazy things most men would never do.

Its pretty much everywhere now, due to the internet. Well, narcissism has always been a thing, but the internet makes it to the point where the individual human can not keep up due to how fast the world now moves. Places with slow/no internet dont deal with the primary problem.

Girls in developing countries do this kind of thing too. It’s not just a western phenomenon. It’s behavior stemming from low self esteem, although a girl at the age in that gif is mostly just doing it for fun and copying someone older who she has seen doing it. It’s not just a female thing either, as OP points out. Plenty of men work out and post lots of pics of themselves. The internet lends itself to the proliferation of visual media, including pictures of ourselves, and this is just a symptom of humans being such a visual species.

99% of women live inside their own head and are obsessed with an internal narrative about themselves. Once you learn that getting women to do what you want is easy, you just have to act out a part that looks like the plot in their head where they're the heroine.

I have no idea if this is new since I'm on the younger side of the Milennials but given the weird rants half the old ladies of PPD go on I would say it isn't.
