Japan I'd presume (& Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc.). Single mothers are impoverished and disliked and few in numbers. Japan in many regards is a better country than any Western country, and much worse in others. But you can't model your society after it. It's a different place.

A friend of my wife, a hippy dancer type, was married to her first husband for 15 years. They had two kids and slept in a family bed (yes, it's a thing, and kill me first, please) which was 100 % her idea but he went along with it out of pure devotion. As far as I could tell he was a devoted husband with a good job and was madly in love with his wife. She didn't feel the same way.

She had an affair with a friend of theirs and divorced her husband for her lover. She got half of everything but because she had basically no marketable skills she plunged herself, her kids, and, for a time, her ex into borderline poverty.

There is an argument among the more Left leaning groups, of which I am loosely associated, that she should be paid or compensated in some way by the government merely for raising her own children. Think about that for a second.

People would be paying taxes to subsidize the fundamentally non-monogamous behavior of this woman and rewarding her for being so heroic as to raise her very own offspring. And, if she is being paid to do this work, does she get a performance evaluation? What in the bloody hell would this look like? Who does her performance evaluation? What are the criteria? Good lord, you could go on with this distasteful nonsense.

I bring this up because that is a proposal ny the Green party and is perhaps 25 percent more audacious than our current system.

When you bring up the subject of single mothers, somehow the widower, the abused innocent, the non-monogamous hippy dancer, and the teen one-night standers all get lumped into the same group. There are two reactions: 1) We honestly cannot distinguish between them in some way? 2) Why should the government be in the business of judging behavior at all?

Given this reality and life's disparate and confusing circumstances, maybe it would be wise to stay out of this and let people make decisions. If they hurt themselves, that sucks. If they don't, well that's good for them.

I'm actually a Left-leaning liberal worried very much about income inequality, the environment, and the government's role in improving social conditions. But this particular topic seems to be suffering from government intervention.

this claim has not been made. there has not been a culture yet with reliable BC and legal abortion AND no aid to single moms

the argument is that abortion and BC obviate the obligation to support single mothers CHOICE to bear children they cant afford

what other developed nation has an out of wedlock birth AND nonintact families (female headed household with no father present) rate comparable to US? im trying to find stats. ~~sweden seems to have 85-90& children raised in intact families~~ NO , i misread

Most Latin American countries come to mind. Even if there is government aid for single mothers it's going to be paltry.

Incidentally single motherhood rate (and I really mean the young and stupid variety, not the 45-year old divorcee variety) is very high in Latin America. The single mothers usually live with their parents to survive.

Meanwhile Western Europe (excluding the UK) has the highest government support for single mothers, but also the lowest incidence of single mothers.

I think we can conclude there are a lot of cultural factors that are more important than government aid. If we're only talking about the US I'd say having no health insurance doesn't keep people from smoking, so I doubt having no government aid for single mothers is going to stop young, stupid hos from having unprotected sex with attractive bad boys.

the solution is this: eliminate welfare but provide public daycare/school at a much younger age (3-6 months old). that way the children get fed and cared for, and the women don't don't have an excuse to sit at home and become worthless leaches on society or anybody

There is no “we” who “model society”.

There is only individual people and their relationship to the State. It is the individual’s responsibility to look after their own children. It is not anyone else’s.

Some positive things may come about by forcibly funneling money to single mothers. Children don’t starve to death, which is good. But long term the incentives become too warped and cultural decay annihilates whatever short-term good was achieved.

The reality is single mothers are never going to get off the backs of the taxpayers. But they are also going to have to eat shit in the collective unconscious of culture for being net takers who made shit decisions.
