I thought the whole point of it from the feminist perspective was to achieve exactly what Henry Cavill is doing. Restrict/inhibit/control the sexuality of high status men.

MeToo is merely another weapon in the Gender War. The weapons of yesteryear are no longer effective.

The sexual revolution means that a man doesn't have to get married to have sex. There are enough women who will gladly be the cheating partner. Then factor in sugaring, women who need help paying rent (lowkey prostitution), outright prostitution and other avenues. Simply put the old method of controlling men, sexual access, doesn't work anymore.

As for alimony and child-support. Doesn't work if a man doesn't marry and gets a vasectomy.

Thus, the two tools used previously to coerce men are no longer effective.

A new weapon needed to be created. Feminists cited the horrible statistic that one quarter of women are raped/sexually assaulted on campus, overblown(but not citing the small number of rapists) and one-sided domestic violence statistics and such to create laws such as the VAWA.

They still seek to change laws concerning discovery, burden of proof, presumption of innocence and the like.

The weapon now is rather insidious. If a woman offers sex for career advancement or other benefits, it is not a crime (women have done this since time immemorial). But a man leveraging wealth, fame, status or power for sex is guilty of a sex-crime (something that men have done forever).

If a woman claims an act took place 5 or more years ago, electronic evidence that is exculpatory may no longer exist due to obsolence of storage drives, software or destruction of the same. It becomes a he said/she said affair. Factor in laws that have changed and probably will change, as well as changing attitudes.

20 years ago if a man and a woman got drunk at a bar and had sex,it was a drunken indiscretion. But people are arguing that rape took place.

It is no longer rape because it violates the law. It is rape because she feels that it was rape, that she regrets the sex. Or it is in her rational self-interest that she suddenly construes it as rape. Enthusiastic consent now can very well be a rape 5 years from now.

What actually happened has no bearing. The woman's feelings is what constitutes 'rape' or 'sexual harassment'.

Feminism seeks to change the calculus of guilt. In effect, man is guilty because a woman feels that he did something wrong.

I think it's extreme, but it's also important to acknowledge that it didn't get created in a vacuum. You'd have to be deaf blind and dumb to deny that sexual harassment and assault has not been taken seriously, historically. Decades and decades of being swept under the rug was the major contributor for this kind of vigilante justice.

So while I don't think vigilantism is the best move forward, I don't really see another option considering that our traditional system continuously failed time after time.

The only way to reign in MeToo is to start punishing harassers and abusers properly within the system. How we go about doing that without a complete overhaul is beyond me.

In my circles, I've seen it take down a fashion photographer that was a known rapist who had successfully evaded authorities for decades by dragging his victims through the mud and sabotaging their credibility. A very popular bar closed because the owner was outed for drugging and assaulting women, something that women in the area claimed for years without any proper investigation. Both of those men are going to trial now. That's fucking great. Sucks that it took a fucking hashtag to get it done, though.

Anyone with a set of eyes and ears (and a job, rule out half the internet where these discussions take place) will know how rampant workplace sexual harassment is. Authority creates contemptible behavior, always has. Men are victims of sexual harassment in the workplace as well, but it is overwhelmingly bent toward women because they are viewed as easy to hush and push around. What is it, then, do we completely axe a necessary phenomenon simply because a fractional minority might get a little too cavalier with it? I suppose we should tear down welfare because of that 2% fraud rate.

Henry Cavill can go piss on an electric fence with this clichéd whataboutism. If a woman wants a man to pursue her beyond her saying "no", then guess what fuckface, she's problematically encouraging shitty behavior and you're more than welcome to call her out on it - if that's actually what's happening in the first place.

A) Women can't abuse "MeToo" because they aren't accusing anyone and they aren't pressing charges against anyone. The movement started as women sharing stories of anonymous men for the sake of other women not feeling alone in their own experiences. None of this was directed at men as abusers beyond a vauge 'well if the shoe fits'.

B) I don't think many women do this out of spite to hurt men in general or specific men. I think most of the women actually believe they have been violated. Now, we can argue if their feelings about it are valid or not, but as a whole it doesn't seem like the intention is directed to bully men, since again, MeToo started as a movement of victims for victims.

2: To what extent has this created a "chilling" effect? Henry Cavill said that he feels reluctant to pursue women beyond "No" (as women claim they want him to do) due to the possibility of a rape accusation. Furthermore, someone said that many powerful/quality men simply don't want to be (alone?) around (young? single?) women in the workplace since it's just too risky, so they just make an exit when those women show up--I can't remember whether the qualifiers in parentheses were used or not, or which of them were used.

I think this is great. It will open up more jobs for women and with half of the work force to afraid to leave the kitchen, salaries will increase again.

I admittedly haven’t followed all of the accusations with a laser focus, but it seems to me that virtually all of the accused have pretty much folded and said the accusations against them are accurate . Did I miss something? FWIW, the only one I have ever suspected of lying for the attention was Janice Dickinson and she is a bundle of dysfunction.
If that many famous guys have been accused, and that many guys have confirmed the accusations to be true, is a chilling effect a bad thing? What am I missing? Wouldn’t you prefer your mothers, wives and daughters not be alone behind closed doors with random guys who have power or influence over them?

I don't think it has created a "chilling effect." I think for men who were already scared of approaching women it's given them a new excuse. I don't think it has changed men who were already fine approaching women beforehand.

I keep seeing the claim that women are now begging Henry Cavil to come back to the dating scene (which I doubt he actually left), but honestly all I’ve seen is disappointment at his tone deaf comments. I even get what he was trying to say, and I hope there was a misunderstanding, but I definitely made one of these faces :/ when I read that interview. No one is accusing men of rape for approaching women in a socially acceptable way. Some men are getting called out for behavior that has never been okay, women just weren’t as vocal about expressing discomfort before and would be accused of overreacting for expressing it. Plenty still do.

The people getting the most pushaback are the type to request “daily hugs” from reluctant women in an office setting, or walk up behind women and start rubbing their shoulders, stuff like that.

I don't think it is "abused" as much as people think, more that the mere thought of becoming a #metoo story, especially if you have any sort of business presence or social life... is a chilling prospect.

It isn't that it HAS been abused, it is that if it were there is almost literally nothing you can do about it. It isn't a rape accusation that could lead to legal issues for a false accuser, its a post on social media...

I'm hyper-aware of my behavior now so that I can avoid ever being a metoo story, and have apologized to women who I think I may have somehow offended with my past behavior. What little flirting and such that I did in the recent past is basically non-existent now. It just isn't worth it to do more than be an acquaintance to a female unless she initiates more.

You know, the problem with men who are 10s, is that they let it get to their heads in many cases. Ben Affleck has been accused of sexual harrasment like 2 times, and I'm sure there are other 10s, not just in Hollywood, but in Bollywood, French cinema etc etc, who have been a litle too drunk and tried to get with women who weren't interested in them.
