Women pairing up with rich successful guys is nothing new, so I don't think it's going to have any real impact on society. What I do like is that it's more in the open. There are dating sites dedicated solely to this type of setup. The guy gets a hot girlfriend/wife and the girl gets an easy financial life. Though I wouldn't want this type of relationship for myself, as long as everyone's cards are on the table, and everyone's agreeable, I don't see anything wrong with it.

If I were a sugarbaby I suspect the kinds of men I'd be looking to date would be similar to the kinds of men I sugared for (rich, successful, possibly older, etc) in the past, and as such, I'd probably be trying to do my best to paint myself in the most positive light. So no, I'd be unlikely to tell them, though I suppose it would really come down to their attitude toward that sort of thing.

Well, I would want to know something like that before committing to someone, so I'd like to think I'd try to do the right thing and give the person a choice. But I can see why it's hard to admit to it, which is another reason why you shouldn't do it in the first place.

In the abstract, I don't see anything wrong with it so long as it's fully consensual. Case by case, I've known some shitty women and some shitty men who've participated in such an arrangement, so I'm not gonna say everyone who does it is a sparkling member of society. It wasn't because of the arrangement though, they were shitty people to begin with.

I'm pro-sex work and I do think that the best way to manage it as a society is to be as transparent as possible, as it's not like it's ever going to go away. "The oldest profession" and all that. I'm glad websites like what you're describing exist so that if something does go horribly wrong, there's a paper trail for the authorities to work with. Regulation is key to ethical sex-work.

Okay kids: confession time. I did the “sugar baby” thing briefly. It consisted of one shopping excursion and one weekend getaway, both with the same man. At no point were bills paid or hard cash exchanged, but he did spend an uncomfortable amount of money on me. I alluded to it here, in the second paragraph.

My short-lived sugar daddy approached me on a generic dating website with an offer to take me shopping. In keeping with the stereotype, he was an older Asian businessman. He wasn’t at all bad looking though, and he struck me as intelligent. I wasn’t short of funds but I was curious.

Over brunch, I found out that he liked spoiling women and resented it when they tried to “claim” him. Spending money on them seemed to be a means of connecting romantically while maintaining an emotional buffer. I could relate to most of that (or, at least, to everything short of having massive amounts of disposable income.) We also both agreed we didn’t want sex to be an obligation on my end. He liked the thrill of the chase and I dislike promising physical intimacy in advance; I always suck ass at it, and get myself depressed, when I believe the intimacy’s somehow obligatory. It worked out in the bedroom because we talked a lot about our likes and dislikes beforehand and stuck to the shit that we were both into. My discomfort came from somewhere else – not the intimacy itself but more the idea of what I was doing.

I think the same thing that intrigued me about the arrangement also left me reluctant to do it again. Fortunately, I haven’t had to do a lot of soul-searching: every time he’s hit me up since then, the decision’s been made for me because I’ve been in a relationship. When I first heard the RP term “shit test,” I thought that, like most things AWALT, it couldn’t possibly apply to me. I realize now that I do have at least one shit test: it involves some expensive lingerie bought for me on the aforementioned shopping excursion with the aforementioned gentleman.

I hadn’t thought about it up until now but, in every exclusive relationship I’ve had since then, there’s been a time that I wear the lingerie and the silk stockings. And, naturally, when I’m posing in the doorway, it seems sensible to me that I should sheepishly explain how, as a twenty-something, I came to own a garter belt. If someone responded badly to the story, that’d be an indicator that we weren’t a match in terms of sexual morality. But then, keep in mind, at the dress-up-like-a-French-whore stage in the relationship, I’m always pretty certain my partner and I are a match (or, at least, not a blatant mismatch.)

My current boyfriend is poor (like, creditors calling poor) so it makes me especially uncomfortable when he buys me gifts. I think that difference between this type of arrangements and a lot of "normal" relationships is way less then people usually admit. The spike of interest from the opposite sex that I experinced after changing my car significantly exceeded my expectations even though i was already reading trp for a while.

I doubt it's prevalent enough to have much impact on society. People who eschew becoming at least somewhat self reliant while being taken care of will find themselves in trouble should their support vanish. But that's what happens when you don't pay attention to number one.

I believe any agreement between consenting adults should be legal. I don't believe it is my business what consenting adults do or don't do, providing they aren't hurting others.

Now having said that, for me, it would be a deal breaker. Sure I would sleep with her, but there is no way in hell I would ever commit to a woman who has a history of having various sugar daddies.
