If supply and demand affect sexual relations, doesn't this mean that a SMV exists?

Relevant to this, a speed dating study in 2009 controlled the social norm of who initiates. When men rotated and women sat they showed the expected sex dynamics (men pursue, women choose; men desire more htan women). Only when exclusively women rotated did the sex differences completely disappear; the authors think this is an effect of increased self-confidence on the part of the pursuer (but somehow it only affects men).

As women are thought to be the sex with higher parental investment, perhaps it is very surprising that anything like parity can be achieved here just by changing the social norms. And I doubt we could just ban all men from approaching women in RL. But perhaps human men should count themselves lucky.

[–]OfSpock12 points13 points14 points 12 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

It takes two to Tango. Both people should be willing. For women to be the gatekeepers of sex, men must have no standards. Similarly, for men to be the gatekeepers of commitment, women would have to be willing to marry anyone who asked them.

Someone has a taken a general trend and gone with hyperbole.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I think women tend to be the "gatekeepers" (be more selective) of both sex and commitment (and indeed I am unsure there is much of a bright line between "sex" and "commitment" in the first place).

[–]We_Are_LegionAutumn Red1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

men must have no standards.

Less standards.*

Proven conclusively by Buss and Schmidt 1993 and 2007.

[–]The-Pax-Bisonica5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I have had women interested in having sex with me and have declined their advances, so aren't I the gate keeper in that situation? This isn't a question of sex or gender, merely who wants the other more. The one that desires the other less is always the gate keeper. Whomever loves least holds all the power, fact of life.

Would they even notice when a woman is coming onto them? The kind of guy who seeks advice on how to get laid from other guys who have trouble getting laid probably doesn't think women have anything interesting to say, even when she's saying "fuck me, now".

Self-defeating circle-jerk. :(

[–]la_sabotageTerp Terp Terp1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's baffling, isn't it? Especially in light of their horrible treatment of women they claim are "fat" or "ugly".

[–]AkodoAre we playing Dr. Mario?0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It confuses me too. It hasn't happened in a while, but too many times I've had discussions with posters here that could be phrased as "I will have sex with anyone who came up to me and asked" Like, really? Do you not have standards? I've turned down quite a few women and I have 0 regrets about doing so. Having sex with someone I don't find attractive doesn't sound fun, in fact it would probably make me feel painfully pathetic. The thirst levels would have to be way too high, and that would be badbadnotgood.

Women get rejected too yanno. And I mean, women are the gatekeepers of their own bodies, yes. They get to decide who has sex with them. But then so do men...

[–]ExpendableOneNeither6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Of course women get rejected too but they, generally speaking, also do not take the amount of risks that men take to approach the opposite sex. They take a passive/receptive role and limit their options to the men that approach them first(at which point, they already know the other person is interested). They do not risk rejection and failure to the same extent that men do. Even when they do approach a lot of men, they are typically far more likely to be accepted and appreciated than a man approaching women(both because of how rare it is and because men are just far more receptive towards women than the other way around). There's a reason why reserved, introverted or shy men, regardless of how successful, attractive or good they are, still have a very hard time finding love; while women who are reserved, introverted or shy will still have plenty of men willing to both embrace her for those qualities but also compensate by being more aggressive/assertive for them as well.

Do you not realize that you've just contradicted yourself in your own post?

[–]ExpendableOneNeither1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

There are no contradictions there... Using "generally speaking" was meant to specify that there are exceptions to the rule, just as there would be exceptions to any other rules. Either way, women can still wait to be approached and be rejected after the fact. A guy could be interested, make the approach and then realize he's not into her after getting to know her. Another opportunity could also present itself that forces him to cut things off with a woman.

[–]la_sabotageTerp Terp Terp0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are no contradictions there... Using "generally speaking" was meant to specify that there are exceptions to the rule, just as there would be exceptions to any other rules.

But you have no evidence that your general rule is, in fact, a general rule, and not an exception to the general rule of "different people act differently".

Either way, women can still wait to be approached and be rejected after the fact.

But that's not what the others were talking about.

In movies perhaps but this has not been my experience in real life at all.

Yeah true but you gotta admit men most initiate initiation is done by dudes and i'm talking maybe 80-85%.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

To respond to what you're actually saying, I can only speak of my own experiences, I would guess this depends on where you are and what your local culture is like and a whole host of other things, but my experiences have shown me that women these days are not wary to hit on guys. I've had multiple women hit on me and I'm not even that good looking. My peers have had similar experiences too. Girls who are considered slutty very often hit on guys without the guy having to initiate a sexual play.

IMO, women who feel a little ashamed of sleeping around, like it's a guilty pleasure, will generally wait for the guy to hit on them, while slutty girls who are at ease with their sexuality are fully willing to initiate and don't hesitate to do so. And in our modern society (which TRP seems to hate even though it works in their favour) a lot more girls belong to the latter group.

[–]cxj75% Redpill Core Ideas1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I agree where you live is a factor. Y'all can believe me or not but TWICE in San Francisco I've had a girl randomly grab me and kiss me with no introduction, just standing nearby and bam. One of those times ended in bathroom sex. Both times I asked after and sure enough sex positive feminism played a part in their decision making.

[–]SirNemesistitties not tithe2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You should have had them thrown in jail for sexual assault.

[–]cxj75% Redpill Core Ideas0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lolol

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. This is not uncommon among the latest generation of young adults. And sex positive feminists are the sane ones rather than the Tumblr ones, so why this is bad like TRP would have us believe I dunno.

[–]cxj75% Redpill Core Ideas3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I'm not entirely sure all of trp thinks it's bad, I think a lot of them just think "it is what it is." Some redpillers definitely think female promiscuity has negative social consequences and is not sustainable because it disincentivizes family formation, and I while I'm not by any means sold on this, their arguments are not totally or easily dismissible imo. Either way, I personally would absolutely not support somehow regulating female sexual behavior based on such an assumption. I am really curious to see how the future plays out, though :)

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I'm sure not all red pillers hate on it but a lot of them certainly do and they aren't shy to talk about it either. It's all about how women being slutty lowers their value and they'd never date a woman with a high partner count despite being promiscuous themselves because dae gatekeeper? They just want to have their cake and eat it too. If they want to stay away from sluts, fine, but then they should stay away from casual sex themselves too.

[–]cxj75% Redpill Core Ideas4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

"Sexual strategy is amoral." - trp

From what I can tell, trp really truly does not give a fuck about what's right, it's about doing what they want and getting the most out of life. It's not about social justice or fairness, it's about winning. For some people, winning is banging tons of chick's and then settling down with a comparatively chaste girl. For me, winning would be more like having sexual relationships while minimizing the risk of being ensnared by our corrupt legal system.

My point is that yes there are def some butthurt trp guys who feel that female promiscuity is "wrong" but overall to me it's more like "women have their games to have their cake and eat it to, here's how we can do the same." I don't see anything hypocritical about that

In whose world? IME most hook-ups/relationships start with body language and mutual recognition of a mutual attraction. There's no need for anyone to initiate anything, it's just kind of obvious to both people involved.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

There's no need for anyone to initiate anything, it's just kind of obvious to both people involved.

That's pretty absurd.

Body language and inviting posture only break the ice and relieve tension.

Smiling seductively and a wink gives you hints and indirectly says "approach me",but someone still has to approach

[–]mustryhardr-2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I said mutual recognition of a mutual attraction, not one person acting like a lecherous creep.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

so open body language ans subtle cues is lecherous behaviour?

Do you even social bro?

[–]mustryhardr-1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You're contradicting yourself. You started by claiming that:

Body language and inviting posture only break the ice and relieve tension.

Smiling seductively and a wink gives you hints and indirectly says "approach me",but someone still has to approach

And now you're saying that body language is, in fact, exactly the same as acting like a creepy sex pest who has no idea how to behave themselves in public.

Which is it kiddo? Make your mind up.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

And now you're saying that body language is, in fact, exactly the same as acting like a creepy sex pest who has no idea how to behave themselves in public.

I said no such thing neither did I imply it.

Please show me where I said this then we'll continue.

[–]mustryhardr1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm paraphrasing, but you can join the dots. Probably. I dunno, you keep changing your mind about what you said, so perhaps you're just making it up as you go along.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm still adamant that I said no such thing.

So one of us is definitely being dishonest.

[–]crankypants15Purple Pill Man0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

With the exception of women over age 35, I have initiated 100% of sexy times. I grew up in a small town if it matters. It was the 1980s, if that matters also.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It was the 1980s

Yeah that explains it. These days things are different.

[–]la_sabotageTerp Terp Terp1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

IME it depends a lot on country, culture, current location, and the people you hang out with. I've had periods in my life where I had to make all contact, and there's been periods where I had a lot of offers from the opposite sex.

Honestly like most TRP "truths" this appears to be an unwarranted overgeneralization based on a very limited sample.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I can't walk down the street in yoga pants without some nimfo staring at my ass. And it's shorts are much more uncomfortable to run in.

[–]mustryhardr8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (37 children) | Copy Link

You're begging the question, based on assumptions that are decades out of date.

When STDs were a life sentence, when childbirth was very likely to kill, when birth control was not available and paternity could not be proved, then yeah, women were generally a bit more careful about who they jumped into bed with.

Nowadays, they mostly just have to learn to avoid the kind of man who thinks they shouldn't be doing the asking. ;)

[–]ExpendableOneNeither5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Nowadays, they mostly just have to learn to avoid the kind of man who thinks they shouldn't be doing the asking. ;)

lol, wtf... why shouldn't women be expected to approach men just as much as men are expected to approach women? Why should men feel as though they have to play a role, and do the asking, just because they are men? That's straight up sexism, or at the very least a double-standard. Why should women still feel entitled to that kind of devotion and assertiveness from men in this day and age? Why should men go through life being the only ones taking that burden on, or taking those risks, just because they are men? Why should men go through life being told that their love, affection and sexuality is inherently less valuable than women's? Why should women limit their options to a subset of men based on an act that has no real baring on compatibility or long/short term potential(especially when the guys who are the most comfortable approaching women are the ones who think the least of them)? The last thing women should "have to learn" is to avoid the kind of men who think they shouldn't be doing the asking.

[–]mustryhardr1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You seem to have entirely misread what I wrote. Or you are aggressively agreeing with me. :-/

[–]ExpendableOneNeither0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I must of missed the sarcasm. It seemed like you were actually stating that women should be avoiding, or thinking wrongly of, men who don't ask first, or that they were perfectly justified in doing so.

[–]mustryhardr1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There was no sarcasm. There is an ambiguous pronoun in there:

Nowadays, they [women] mostly just have to learn to avoid the kind of man who thinks they [women] shouldn't be doing the asking [ie those men who still apply different standards to women than they do to themselves]

[–]la_sabotageTerp Terp Terp3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

When STDs were a life sentence, when childbirth was very likely to kill, when birth control was not available and paternity could not be proved, then yeah, women were generally a bit more careful about who they jumped into bed with.

Actually back then it was usually men who restricted women's sexual liberties (parents, government etc.)

The "sexual gatekeepers" in those times were not women, but fathers (remember, until the 20th century "rape" was defined as men having sex with a woman against her father's wish)

[–]mustryhardr2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men restricting female sexuality is an entirely different, and entirely ongoing, phenomenon. The specifics you raise are also entirely class-based. Those same men had no problem with rape of servants and factory girls, only those women whose marriage served the interests of property ownership.

Hence the oft-expressed idea that, on marriage, men should be experienced and women virgins. Working-class women didn't count.

[–]FrontTooth0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

Which would include most men, since in reality, the absolute majority of women doesnt initiate contact unless they are drunk, which is the only way it ever happened to me and mind me im a goodlooking male who does get laid. If they want you, they will stand or dance close to you, usually with their friends close and their back to you. I dont like it or understand it, it was the red pill who opened my eyes to this behaviour and now i tap their shoulder and say hi.

God bless the truths of the manosphere, right?

[–]mustryhardr0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

I'm sure some of them do get laid. Just not as often (or as enthusiastically) as they would if they thought of women as actual human beings.

I'm equally sure that if any of them were getting laid as much as they claim, or at all, they wouldn't feel the need to shout about it.

[–]FrontTooth2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

What is it that makes you think red pill sees women as anything else than a human being?

[–]lorddeathhhh 3 points3 points3 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Pray tell, how is it a "self-defeating strategy" if it axiomatically works on most women at both a biological and social level?

"Looking to get laid whilst disliking women who also want to get laid is not being a man, it's being a hypocrite." You are assuming that everyone who swallows the red pill dislikes all women; that would be an erroneous conjecture. Sure, there are a lot of bad apples in the mélange but the same can be said for practically every group of people.

"And it's almost certainly why you feel the need to state that you do get laid. Honest. Heh." Yea, he shouldn't be able to assert any anecdotal evidence that goes against your confirmation bias. That's veracious, pattern recognizing logic and pattern recognizing logic hurts your feelfeels.

[–]mustryhardr6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

How is it a self-defeating strategy? The clue is in the "hating women even more" bit. It is not axiomatic that women prefer men who despise them, that is the fantasy of a tiny circle-jerk of sad fucks who have so little confidence in their manhood, they need to disparage women to make themselves feel powerful.

I used the word "dislike" because I was echoing his phrasing - despising them would be a better choice of word. Liking women in the sense of wanting to stick your cock in them is not a meaningful use of the word. Seeing them as people who need to be manipulated into having sex is just plain creepy.

As for his need to assert anecdotal evidence ... that wasn't anecdote or evidence, it was pure Psychology 101. Your naivety might explain why you think TRP actually works though.

[–]lorddeathhhh 0 points0 points0 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

"How is it a self-defeating strategy? The clue is in the "hating women even more" bit." Did you even read my entire post? Like I posited, you are assuming that everyone who swallows the red pill dislikes (or despises) all women; that would be an erroneous conjecture. Sure, there are a lot of bad apples in the mélange but the same can be said for practically every group of people.

"Liking women in the sense of wanting to stick your cock in them is not a meaningful use of the word. Seeing them as people who need to be manipulated into having sex is just plain creepy." I agree, it's just that swallowing the red pill does not force you to not be able to have amiable, reciprocal relationships with girl friends, girlfriends, wives, or friends with benefits.

"As for his need to assert anecdotal evidence ... that wasn't anecdote or evidence, it was pure Psychology 101." It's not a black or white matter; it can be (and is) both.

"Your naivety might explain why you think TRP actually works though." I don't "think" it works, I know most of it works. The data ardently backing TRP is predicated upon throngs of biological and social empirical evidence in accordance with the scientific method. Perchance if you leave your colossal edifice of delusions you will fathom the same veracity.

[–]lorddeathhhh 3 points3 points3 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Oh yeah? Do you personally know each and every person that is subscribed to TRP to ascertain if they are in fact bad apples? Stop conjecturing sweeping statements with fragmentary data.

[–]lorddeathhhh 1 points1 points1 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

"Obviously the ones that stick around are those who agree with the material or the statements made by the community." I stick around to peruse TRP occasionally and I only agree with approximately 30% of the material (and many times only bits and pieces of said material) and 15% of the statements made by the community so that's an erroneous posit.

"People willing to agree with such drivel are typically your bad apples - societal misfits who are angry and have just found a target for their anger, provided for by TRP." Again, you are merely conjecturing sweeping statements with the use of fragmentary data. It would take me hours upon hours to refute every inane claim made by every staunch, delusional user of TRP and I would rather not spend my life fighting the insurmountable plague of stupidity known as average humans. Don't judge an entire community based upon the clarion, opinionated, overt imbeciles when there are many, many silent intellectuals within the community.

Pray tell, how is it a "self-defeating strategy" if it axiomatically works on most women at both a biological and social level?

Do you know what an "axiom" is?

Axiom:

An axiom, or postulate, is a premise or starting point of reasoning. As classically conceived, an axiom is a premise so evident as to be accepted as true without controversy. The word comes from the Greek ἀξίωμα (āxīoma) 'that which is thought worthy or fit' or 'that which commends itself as evident.' As used in modern logic, an axiom is simply a premise or starting point for reasoning. Axioms define and delimit the realm of analysis; the relative truth of an axiom is taken for granted within the particular domain of analysis, and serves as a starting point for deducing and inferring other relative truths. No explicit view regarding the absolute truth of axioms is ever taken in the context of modern mathematics, as such a thing is considered to be an irrelevant and impossible contradiction in terms.

Your premise is wrong. "Women" aren't some singular unified group that get together and make decisions about who they're going to limit their sex to. "Women" are billions of individuals around the world with vastly differing personalities, traits and experiences.

So in some cases, a woman might be the "gatekeeper" for sex. In other cases, a woman might not be.

[–]ThorLivesSkeptical Purple Pill Man4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link

I'm finding most of the comments in this post to be pretty disappointing. Honestly, it makes me think that the PurplePill subreddit has become too heavily visited by BluePillers.

Here's what I would have hoped that someone would've written. First, there's a number of things said in the RedPill that are exaggerations, but they have a degree of truth to them. If someone is kind of pissed off about something, they tend to overstate their argument. (I see this all the time with feminists, as well. I hope that people who are complaining about RedPill exaggerations are equally as critical about feminist exaggerations.)

The thing is that men tend to be more sexually motivated than women are. I'm sure we can all come up with explanations for why this is the case. Maybe women are socialized not to sleep around because it will lower her value. Maybe women simply have lower sex drives for biological reasons (and I do believe this is part of the answer). Maybe women have a hard time reaching orgasm or have body-image issues, so they tend to find sex less pleasurable. Maybe some women were sexually abused and they have all kinds of issues around having sex. Whatever those reasons are, the end result is that women are less sexually motivated than men are. I could talk about this quite a bit or offer lots of evidence that there is an imbalance in male-female sex drives. Evidence supporting this argument include:

  • most of the prostitution industry caters to male clients,

  • most strippers and pornography caters to men,

  • when comparing gay male couples, heterosexual couples and lesbian couples, gay males have the most sex and the highest number of sexual partners, lesbians have the least sex and the lowest number of sexual partners, and heterosexual couples fall in the middle but closer to lesbians

As I said, I could go on about this, but I don't want to belabor the point. I will also admit that not everybody is the same. I have one male friend who only wants sex about once a month (which doesn't make his girlfriend very happy), so I know that variations exist. I also know women with high sex drives (one male friend of mine complained about a girl who wanted sex eight times a day). Though, to be fair, both of those situations are within a relationship framework.

Still, we can talk about the buyer-seller market dynamic with sex the same way we talk about the buyer-seller market dynamic with the home market. If there are more people trying to buy homes than sell them, that has an effect on the entire market (i.e. it becomes a "seller's market"). Talking about how "some home owners want to sell their home", as if that invalidates the fact that it's a seller's market is missing the point.

In the realm of sex, women have most of the power because whoever wants it less (whether it's sex or the housing market) has more power. This isn't to say that this happens in every situation. I'm a man and I've turned down sex from women, but it's still obvious to me that, in general, women have more power than men on this issue. In general, most of the women who have initiated or tried to initiate sex with me have generally been less attractive. (Individual attractiveness also influences the buyer-seller dynamic. One could think of those situations this way: the woman has power as a result of being the female and the general market conditions put women at an advantage over men, but she's not so attractive, so she's at a disadvantage relative to me.) I'm sometimes astounded at how well some of my female friends do at bars - if they want to pickup a guy at a bar for sex, she's at a big advantage over me trying to pickup girls for sex, even if she's less attractive than me. I know some average-looking girls that clean-up like crazy at bars. Sometimes I've been left speechless at how easy they have it. If one of my average-looking female friends offered me a bet: to have a race to sleep with 10 new people and whoever gets there first wins, I'd never take that bet because women have it far easier than men do.

This imbalance where women have most of the power is being turned into "women are the gatekeepers of sex". That's somewhat true, though, as I said, I've turned down sex with girls (mostly because I simply wasn't that attracted to them, and I don't really care about sleeping with someone I'm not attracted to). To further reinforce this fact, we could compare the number of sexual partners that gay men have versus heterosexual males. It's really damn easy for gay men to get laid. There's often very little work that needs to go into it (see Grindr). There have been studies of gay men in San Francisco before the AIDS epidemic hit, and the number of sex partners that the average man had was astounding. (Have you ever heard of a heterosexual bath house? No? Well, I have gay friends and there are gay bathhouses.) This is the amount of sex that straight men would be having except that women are generally not willing to jump into bed anywhere nearly as quickly as most men are. Does that make women the "gatekeepers"? I suppose it depends on how strict you are about your definition of gatekeeper. I don't think it's literally true, but more often than not, that's the way things play-out.

I think you're ascribing things to sex and sexuality that are actually simple products of culture.

Prostitution/stripping are just forms of wage labour - the clients are those with the capital to pay for their services - which is why heteroexual male prostitution and female sex tourism are on the rise, now that there are large numbers of women with economic power independent of men.

Girls and boys are brought up with very different expectations placed on them. Men are stereotyped as walking penises who should always be up for it, and women are stereotyped as frigid virginal types who should always say no if marriage is not part of the deal. [You could hardly design a better system for producing rape culture.]

Much of the untoward sex-pestery that women have to deal with is a product of boys trying to impress other boys - it certainly has nothing to do with trying to i. And much of the reserve women show when dealing with sexual attention, apart from sex pestery not actually being at all attractive, is down to the way they will be treated if they respond - boys will call them sluts, and girls will join in. That they will also face abuse for saying no is testament to the fact that most of these manchildren are not at all interested in getting women to like them, they're only interested in what the other manchildren think.

Similarly, with your comments on gay male culture. Overt campness, cottages, saunas and so on arose within a wider homophobic culture where gay sexuality had to be repressed. I see these things mirrored in straight culture - swinging, dogging, holiday resorts that are little more than organised orgies, but straight people have long had the luxury of pursuing their sex lives in public, and being viewed as individuals rather than a homogeneous lump of "other".

Lesbian culture differs from male gay culture because gay women faced different barriers, women have different cultural constraints and there is an entirely different political context, most obviously the strong feminist element to some parts of lesbian culture. Plenty of lesbians go to strip clubs, for example - and face criticism for it from feminist lesbians who object to their taking part in the exploitation of other women. Different cultural contexts and constraints.

Whatever your sexuality, sexual extravagance and sexual conservativism are subcultures, not the culture, and their perceived prevalance is often a product of the dominant culture within which they exist. There is no valid way to separate nature from nurture, but I think it is a huge error to reach for nature as an explanation before you have considered whether nurture and the surrounding culture are capable of explaining what you think you are observing.

"On the rise" is different from "equal". As I understand it, there's very little female prostitution clients with the exception of Carribean countries (which is still low relative to male-client prostitution) - and even in those countries, the males won't actually ask for payment directly, instead, they'll play the role of "lover" (not just sex) and they ask for money for some medical bill that suddenly "came up" for their mother/sister/etc. There are also clubs in Japan where women will hire a "host" - a male (or female dressed as a male) who will pour them drinks and chat with them all night at a bar. They would make a fortune doing this work because the women clients tended to be single and earning their own money. The interesting thing about that is that the male hosts claimed there was no actual sex happening. It's as if these women merely wanted male attention and eye-candy, as if they weren't interested in actually having sex with these male escorts that they were paying thousands of dollars to. (Another example of the "females want it less" story again.) Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpZbu7J7UL4

boys will call them sluts, and girls will join in

First, that doesn't invalidate my point. Whatever the reason for women not sleeping around (whether it was part of some bad culture that exists in Western countries or some other reason), the net effect is the same: an imbalance in the sexual market between men and women.

There is no valid way to separate nature from nurture, but I think it is a huge error to reach for nature as an explanation before you have considered whether nurture and the surrounding culture are capable of explaining what you think you are observing.

My argument never rested on the assumption that these differences are biological. I happen to think that biology is part of it, but my argument would still be just as strong even if I assume that it's 100% sociological. My argument is simply this: for whatever reason (biological, sociological, both, or neither), there is an imbalance in the sexual marketplace between men and women and this leads to a situation where women are turning down sex more often than men are.

To quote a female friend (who said this a month or two ago): "We're the one's who decide whether it [sex] happens or not." That's not 100% true, of course, but it was in the context of her telling me that she didn't have sex with her boyfriend at prom - they dated for 1.5 years, and she never had sex with him because she wanted to save her virginity and wanted it to be extra special. He, on the other hand, wanted to have sex. She didn't lose her virginity until she was 22. It's an example of the female being the "gatekeeper", which tends to be more typical than the male being the gatekeeper who's turning down sex from women.

Your first point presumes that society is already equal. It isn't.

You did pay lip service to the influence of culture, but spent most of your post claiming it was more nature than nurture. I don't think you have any valid basis for that assertion.

I don't know how your female friend's opinion has anything to do with anything. If she wanted sex and her boyfriend did not, I damn well hope she would respect that.

You're generalising about billions of human beings based on the bubble you inhabit and no evidence whatsoever.

To be fair, you provided zero evidence for it as well. While it is interesting to think about it as a possibility, even in cases where culture should not be a factor, the same trends do to an extent continue, wouldn't you agree?

For example, porn is private. And famous for being all-inclusive. Women's porn is a focus of multitude of companies, and it is extremely unfair to say that the market would not provide supply for whatever preferences a large market of women expressed a demand for.

The sex tourism or demand for sex workers you mentioned by wealthy women is not only minuscule compared to the numbers of women, but also on a per client basis, the services include less sex and far more of other types of services. Such as the male sex worker industry in Japan(I've not worked in clubs there but I've seen them) and even Hong Kong(I've worked as a host in a club there for about a week or so for fun, but what I've heard reflects the same).

You're generalising about billions of human beings based on the bubble you inhabit and no evidence whatsoever.

... I'm honestly astonished the lengths you'll go to prevent cognitive dissonance.

I'm not relying on those two authors. Usually when something is cited in another paper, the findings are tested, questioned and peer-reviewed, and any discrepancies mean newer revisions are necessary. So if you search that on google scholar, you'll come across thousands of papers doing the same. And Buss and Schmitt are hardly the only two authors. Their findings and predictions have been confirmed by biologists and used to explain the role of menstruation to function of the shape of the penis to the function of back and forth motion in sex. Predictions from it have tremendous contemporary and historical evidence, and is supported by findings from anthropologists, psychologists and geneticists. This find of study quite literally writes the wikipedia page for mating strategies and human sexual behavior and psychology.

But the height of irony is that instead of several twenty year long efforts of study and hard empirical data conducted by thousands of scientists, and confirmed by peers and used as branches for new research, you actually do name an extremely ideologically motivated author whose work has received a tepid response from the scientific community at best, and even that for bringing mainstream attention to current study, and criticized for ignoring broad sets of conflicting data, from transpeople/homosexuals to literally no examples from all of human history to support her claims to lots of neuro-biological research. It has little to no acedemic backing. It just has the uniqueness factor for arguing an opposite viewpoint.

You realize how absolutely dismal the reputation is of authors who argue empirical data on the basis of politics or ideology. There are books on the delusions of evolution by religious zealots. There are books on the delusions of homosexuality and books on disproving the whatever in favour of whatever.

Usually I would debate but they are complete fucking idiots following PC mores they want to believe. The data on this is beyond conclusive and reflected by almost every study on mating behaviours. Hell, its about the norm on every dating site service too. And reflected in market behaviour(men spend their income on dates, rings, gifts, etc far more than women. bars encourage women to come as the service they provide to male patrons). I could go on, the list is endless.

The amount of blatant humblebragging in this thread... the amount of sidelining of discussion for sake of being a snowflake... wow.

You're thinking far too simply about this. It will never be as easy as "women are this and men are that". Never. However, disregarding the root of why certain genders behave in certain ways - I want to avoid that debate as much as possible to be honest, because it's messy - the recipient of advances is the "gatekeeper" to sex and the initiator is either accepted or rejected by the recipient. That's is definitely the way the social interaction generally goes. Gender has nothing to do with it.

But all the messy things are the most fun to talk about.

the recipient of advances is the "gatekeeper" to sex and the initiator is either accepted or rejected by the recipient.

Do you think in the western world, more often than not, women are the recipients and men are the initiators?

[–]MISANDRYLADY1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think that is the cultural narrative that is prevalent throughout the western world, but I don't think it's important to address. It's not biology, it's just a history of cultural patriarchy that makes sense when you Look back and think about how society used to be and how we've progressed. However, as a woman who usually makes the first move, I don't really relate to the cliche you're trying to prove.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

Because some men are more reserved and because some women are going to initiate things. Neither is in the majority, but there are men who will turn down sex for whatever reason and women that will initiate sex for whatever reason. Basically, you have to look at it by the individual, not by the entire gender.

[–]219387219387[S] -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Which cultures have the majority of women being the ones who ask men out or who initiate relationships?

[–]Keeper_Artemus3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is how you're looking at it:

Men constantly seek entrance to Sexland. Women guard the gates and can let anyone in that they want.

This is how it is:

Sexland is on the other side of a wall that it takes two people to get over. Men generally want to get in more than women do, so generally it's men who initiate. Both people are granting each other entrance; the man might have a harder time finding a partner, but the woman is equally incapable of entering on her own.

There is no gatekeeper. It's just that generally women have less trouble getting in when they want to.

[–]bunker_man._.2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Primary could literally mean 51%. Something being more likely doesn't make it the only case. Gate-keepers imply that someone doesn't want something at all, not that they want it less.
