None of these are necessarily objectification. The concept of objectification revolves around reducing someone's status to that of an sexual object. If I 'hire a woman because of how she looks' does that mean I'm interested in her romantically? Surely we wouldn't say making stupid decisions based on attraction is the same as objectification, right?

If I am romantically or sexually interested in a longterm female friend and 'orbit' her because I want to have sex, does that mean I don't see her as a human being with thoughts and feelings? That seems pretty assumptive. If I was pretending to care for years that makes me a sociopath which is slightly worse than the feminist buzzword in question.

If I think my coworker only got that award because she is hot, does that mean I can't still like her as a person, or at least still treat her like a person? Also, is there no universe where this could be the correct assumption (seems likely, given question 1)?

The ONS comes the closest to true objectification...but you would have to refine it a little. If you said that this person had a One Night Stand with the sole intention of putting it online then yes, that is objectification. However that doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad thing. Plenty of women would be cool with being objectified in that way. Hell, he's objectifying himself too. The added 'I didn't tell her' doesn't change whether or not it's objectification, just how big of an asshole he's being.

I think technically it's not about what is objectification but what is a wrong objectification. I dont think that anyone needs to care about another person as a complete human being in every interaction, we are most of the time reduced to something (which becomes more complex the more other person knows us and the more our relationship grows). Is it an objectification if I love to play badminton with someone but have no interest in their sense of humour, hopes and dreams? It doesnt mean I am negating their existence, only that my personal interest is limited. Likewise in every professional setting we are also only used for a specific function/s by our bosses, clients and usually colleagues and we do the same in return.

The only issue is:

When someone who is supposed to be interested in you because of function A becomes interested in you for function B (e.g. a boss or a doctor who should look at you as staffer or patient decide to instead take sexual interest in you.... or a family member). I am not counting friendships here because those are not formal relationships where in a way you owe the other person to see them a certain way.
When you dont share the same interest back but they persist or force it or are in any way making it your problem
Misleading a person greatly about the nature of your interest and relationship

So it's not about what is objectification here but what is the problem here and that would be:

Numbers 5,6, 9 (because of dishonesty but not as much as the others because it's an informal relationship anyway),10

Numbers 2 and 3 depend on the context. If it's his company then he has the right to do this plus looks might matter for the job but if he was trusted with a responsibility to find the best candidate based on unrelated set of guidelines and then did his personal twist it's obviously not a great job from his end

Some of these dont sound nice but people can think and say whatever they want. There are many non sexual parallels where people think or say shit about others so I dont want to blur the lines. I wouldn't get into objectification matter here

Stuff like the alcohol example are things a woman can handle regardless of his intention and plus it isnt related to the topic

If you don't tell her why you hired her, though, you're more hurting yourself than anyone else, considering looks are a poor metric to gauge professionalism by. (Unless you mean hiring an escort. In which case no, it's not objectification. It's a business exchange, and her looks are part of what you are paying for access to. it'd be weird not to consider her looks.)

Not in and of itself. As with hookers, the point of sex work is to provide sexual entertainment, of which visual stimulation tends to be a major part. Presumably the actors are consenting to this and are providing the material for this purpose. But once could argue that the very act of watching a woman be fucked for the purpose of entertainment was objectifying the woman, but in this case she is consenting to objectification. It's kind of the point.

Guiding principle: In order to objectify someone the one that is objectifying should treat the other person as an object and not a human.

I only find cases 7, 9, 11, 12, 13 and 18 to be clear enough for me to believe that the active party is treating the pasive party as an object and ignoring their humanity.

In the other cases it could be the case that objetification is happening but it is not necessary.

Technically none of these are objectification. I see sexism, creepiness, vanity, lookism, a lot of cases of general scumminess. But none of those is really somebody objectifying another. Tbh "watch porn" comes closest, because you really don't see the people in it as complete human beings and they are reduced to a function, but we also do that to actors in movies. You could say a guy lying to get a girl into bed and immediately dump her thinks the same, but I don't buy it. Having ulterior motives doesn't fully reduce your partner in interaction to only the one function. The hooker one might work, generally any person only providing you with a professional service gets objectified. Not all forms of reducing a person on some element of their being is objectification though, you d have to reduce them to the one thing they can do for you and nothing else, like a tool. So I take 10 and 13, but not strictly in all cases. I bet some people crush on their hooker or favorite porn star, build up some creepy fantasy and work on them being together.

None of these things are objectification. Jaming your key into a womans ear and turning it expting her head to open up would be objectification. Treating a person like an object rather than a human is seperate from being an asshole. You can only be an asshole to other humans. You are still interacting with them as human. If you reduce your interest and focus with someone strictly to their sexuality, you are still treating them as human, just not in a way they like.
