20-39 is a pretty large age range. Most women get fat after having a kid and either have trouble or somehow don't feel that they need to take that weight off. I still see lots of childless women in their early 20s who are thin and take good care of themselves. This is the population that I assume the women on here are talking about when they say women invest a lot of time and effort on their appearance.

I feel like both sides point to stats like this but I really think the numbers get skewed by the older folks. I live in a college town and there is endless hot good BMI girls. Seems to be no shortage of good BMI guys as well. My job takes me to a lot of different places where others work and all the 30 somethings are fatasses.

Weight =/= Time, effort and otherwise investment into appearance.

I would look at how much women spend their time and money on clothes appearance, dieting etc, as this question is about effort rather than outcome.

Also, the inference is that women that weigh less are more attractive, but I'd argue that women with the classic hourglass figure, with exagerated curves, would be the beauty standard du jour (in Western Society). This doesn't neccessarily correlate with being thin.
