If the shop owners/employees have reasonable evidence, in many civilized places it is in fact legal to hold the accused until police arrive. It's not always advisable, due to safety concerns, but it's not illegal.

This just isn't true. This varies by jurisdiction, but generally in the US one can be prosecuted for shoplifting without leaving the store. Stores are also legally entitled to detain those that do shoplift.

In the US, shoplifting almost always includes intent, so it doesn't matter if they never left. Heading for the door with unpurchased items is sufficient, and in some places, simply concealing items is enough to draw a charge.

Possibly but that is an uphill battle if they were still in the store.

Creating reasonable doubt isn’t all that difficult if one hasn’t left.

So yes, technically they could be charged. The real question is about the chance of conviction. Can you prove their intent? Since we don’t have the whole incident, we are left to question it.

I can see this is hard to follow.

See, the head locking comes as a consequence of the entitlement! Like how 4 is the result of 2 + 2.

When you walk into a store to steal, then simply try to walk out and become angry that you weren’t allowed to, there’s a reason you got angry you couldn’t leave like you expected (you wouldn’t get angry if you knew). If you expected to be able to walk out, you would be considered entitled because there’s no logical reason to expect to be able to walk out of a situation you created in this manner.

Is that true? I was gonna say that had she been innocent she can sue for kidnapping which is defined as being held captive to which can be argued in this case. And under what authority can the shopkeeper detain an alleged thief based off of what evidence? This seems that a shopkeeper can “detain” whomever they so please under the pretense they were in fact shoplifting. And her fighting can be argued as self defense and as a means to escape from her “captors”. Up until she fights the officer she had a solid case.
