Sexism is not a dial that is too far towards "MEAN TO WOMEN" or "MEAN TO MEN" that you "balance" by pushing the other way or only focusing on who has it worse.

Sexism is sexism. It is a pervasive system of biases, perceptions, and beliefs about men and women, participated in by men and women. It is not the creation of anyone and inflicted on anyone else. Everyone is a part of it. The parts are inextricable from the whole. Ignoring one gender's experience of sexism is like pretending men and women get into car accidents for totally different reasons, and only trying to help one of them.

You do not correct a system of bias by identifying who it is mean to and being mean to the other side. You have to actually challenge the biases, beliefs, and perceptions.

And you have to actually do that. Feminism talks a big game about challenging power structures but ot buys into the biases of sexism wholesale: men are threatening and disposable, women are precious victims, and men Must Always Do More to keep women safe.

We don't oppose feminism because Feminism Is For Women and we are against them. We oppose feminism because feminism has absolute continuity with sexism and is actively making men's lives worse.

Not to say there aren't scenarios and individuals who seek to harm or discriminate against women, or issues women deal with more than men, but yes, I do actually think men have it worse. From birth to death, women are supported and given benefits that men aren't on an institutional level and in most areas are doing better than men.

Just have a look through this list. There are NO male programs except what? The draft. A unique obligation to get the right to vote that women don't have. Women do better throughout education but all educational programs and scholarship seek to hoist up women at men's expense.

Women may earn less than men, but if you do your research you'll find this is due to job choices, women choose to work fewer and more flexible hours in less labour intensive jobs, and despite this, women somehow control 80% of spending, a fact recognized by advertisers who use that info to cater advertising towards women's interests. In fact young women today ARE outearning men (despite the alleged wage gap), but this does not account for them controlling spending. So where does it come from? Well, men obviously. Even in a world where young women earn as much as men, hypergamy (women seeking higher earning men) remains consistent, surveys show women seek a partner who earns 55% more than them. This itself is a bit ambitious in a world where legalized discrimination (affirmative action plans) aim to put as many women as possible in high paying and glamorous positions at men's expense, and the expense of being able to choose the best candidate) but the social standard of the man being a provider holds up these standards in a world where women are the gatekeepers of sex and relationships.

Okcupid stats of men and women's attractiveness show that men have a realistic bell curve of their ratings of women's attractiveness, average being around 50%. But women rate 80% OF MEN as BELOW AVERAGE, which frankly, don't you think, suggests a delusion surrounding the word average. Hence the colloquial assertion that below average men are essentially invisible to women, that is, until they become an issue. It isn't a small subset of ugly, gross, hateful men who make up incels, stats show an ever increasingly large portion of men are not engaging in sex or romance, as this video covers. https://youtu.be/8f8Wn74hIA4 This is bad for both men and women, but men especially, as having these interactions are actually very important for mental health and developing socially and understanding more about themselves and the world, and creating strong, self assured men that women want to see and form families with. Going for the top 20% means most men have enormous competition for any woman, and women have enormous cimpetition for a few guys who are ultimately unlikely to choose to settle down anyway.

Men's mental health is also clearly affected by a number of other factors, starting nearly from birth with circumcision, which is shockingly still legal as a voluntary choicd for parents, despite being a violation of human rights, and infant circumcision being heavily linked to PTSD and dissociative disorders. Then throughout life, men's health issues and situational issues recieve far less funding than women's, but nowhere is this more blatant then in the treatment of domestic violence and sexual violence. Around the western world, and beyond, flimsy and falsified feminist research from Mary P. Koss and others has actively sought to misrepresent physical and sexual violence as a heavily gendered issue and their lobbying has successfully created change on this in government. Non discriminatory acts like the family violence act have been replaced with the gendered violence against women and children act, and countless organizations, governmental and otherwise, set up to focus basically exclusively on male perpetrators and female victims based on the feminist duluth model which is awful. Erin Pizzey, a feminist then, now MRA, set up the UK's first domestic violence shelter for women. She tried to do the same for men, but feminist groups lobbied against it, not wanting to take the funds away from where they were "really needed" (even though the reality of domestic violence is much closer to gender parity than often presented) and to this date men's shelters are a rarity, an oddity even, usually scarcely funded by individuals and small groups, whereas women's shelters are assively widespread with huge government backing. The standard protocol for a domestic violence call in most places is for any call by a man or woman claiming violence, arrest the man, as it's probably his fault. This itself can be used as proxy violence by women to men, using the police as a weapon.

Hi there. Before I go into this, there are some things you are going to need to consider before reading our answers. I hope this sets you up well for what's to follow.

Firstly, we get this question a lot. Some people are going to be shorter with you than others because of it. Secondly, we are used to trolls turning up trying to cause trouble, or more specifically, they will ask questions like yours and then argue against our answers. Thus proving they were never hear to hear us or learn of our concerns but to stir the pot so they can report back to other feminist subs about how evil and mean we are when called out on their behaviour. Thirdly, some of the things you hear here will be hard to grasp at first or hard to accept. That's fine. You don't need to believe us BUT you absolutely should listen to us. To listen properly, please don't start arguing or try political point scoring. Fourthly, a lot of men here are hurting. Badly. They might seem rough or might even be rude. Try to not take it to heart, they don't know you and you don't know them. A BIG problem the Men's Rights Movement has is that there is a lot of men in pain who find us and have no means of expressing that without retaliation from society. Some of us handle it better than others, so ignore those who may act up and focus on those of us who are actively trying to help you to understand. Because really that's what everyone wants - to be understood, not strawmanned, and maybe be taken seriously.

With all that said, let's move on and answer some questions! :)

For me (speaking as someone who's been a life long feminist turned MRA) it isn't a question of oppression. We (as humans) are ALL oppressed by the limitations of being alive. Living is HARD and only wealth and sciencdtific advancement can truly remove those shackles in any meaningful way. Oppression is also a heavily loaded word that is both over-used and misused these days, so when speaking about this I'll be speaking plainly and cut the nuance of each point. Yes, men are oppressed, in certain areas, systematically. These areas include (but are not limited to)...

the rights to be a parent or not in family courts.

The right to personal autonomy/not be circumcised at birth or mislead into receiving surgery.

The Duluth models approach to dealing with domestic violance situations/approaching males as volant perpetrators and women as innocent victims.

The justice systems leniency towards female perpetrators of crime/harsher sentencing for men.

Education favours girls over boys and grades show this.

Women are favoured over men during job interviews due to position quotas.

Socially, men have their own varients of oppression in this regard too: being social pariah for systematic failures.

Being seen as deserving of punishment/not deserving of care, ignoring the death gap between when men die and women die.

Ignoring men's physical and mental health requirements in terms of funding and advertising in favour of women.

Being see simultaneously as responsible for looking after women (and should even offer up their lives for women) but reprimanded for doing so AND for not doing it enough (this is more to do with the dis-jointed and 'many branches' of feminism laying down conflicting standards on men and women).

Being painted as violant sexual predators, mysogynists and self-serving patriarchy enforcers despite heavy evidence to the contrary.

The double-standard of it being completely socially unacceptable to socially or politically declare an open hatred on/of women but the very clear free passes that given to women hating on men.

Men being denied emotional and physical nurturing, especially when we need it most.

Men's responsibility to 'be a man' when it suits a women and ONLY when it suits a women.

Lastly, from me at least, the almost willful ignorance that women have of their own power, physically, emotionally and sexually, over men and this is a huge power dynamic often exploited but denied to exist.

Like I said above, life is hard for everyone and we each have our own unique struggles so its not a matter of who has it worse - I consider that a underdeveloped and non-constructive way of viewing the world. All it does is draw divisions and creates barriors to who is and who isn't entitled to receive help. Its why you'll see article after article of "Here's how women have it worse" by career feminists. Got to keep peddling that narrative of women having exclusive rights to being a victim out of being alive (because it makes them money and they'll protect that at all costs because of it). The truth is some of us have it better in some areas than others - no one can truly deny that. Oh, and money absolutely matters and is often overlooked when discussing life's hardships.

Sadly, I have no stats on hand to back up what I've said and it's 2 a.m so I am going to bed.

There are a number of problems that disproportionately affect men, yes.

If everyone is equally "oppressed", do we congratulate ourselves on a job well done, pack up and go home?

In specific cases of how to apportion limited resources for maximum helpful effects, this might be a useful question. In Big Picture terms, it's irrelevant.

Men are the majority of victims of rape.
Men are the majority of victims of domestic violence.
Men are the majority of victims of genital mutilation.
Men are the majority of victims of fatal occupational injuries.
Men are the majority of victims of violent crime.

In several of the above cases, the effectsof these things on women is given significantly more funding and attention.

As a feminist, this subreddit confuses me. I’m not here to hate or disregard your opinions, I’m just curious. I understand that men have problems, just like women do, and that many of these problems are swept under the rug. I have a few questions, though, if anyone is willing to answer.

Thank you for recognizing we have problems due to our sex and that these are generally downplayed. And thank you for asking questions and giving us a chance to answer.

Oppression is a vague term, but if I try to go by standard of what qualifies as oppression to feminists with regard to women but for men then yes, there is absolutely no question that men are oppressed.

In contemporary western society I think men definitely have it worse as a group. Like, a fuckton worse.

I'm not aware of any hard statistics that favor men except success in certain specific careers.

If you mean in favor of an MRA perspective then check out The Real Sexism Project website for a decent cross section of them.

Again, not saying any of you are wrong. Just curious, as this idea hasn’t ever been introduced to me.

A few things to know when reading here:

The term feminism is used here to describe the Dworkin/Daly/Koss/Solanas-inspired hate machine. The people who take their inspiration from these authors identify themselves as feminists, and are the most well-funded and well-connected (powerful) group of people who do so. Feminism is therefore, de facto, what these people _do_. You can expect arguments claiming that these are fringe elements or that feminism is about equality for everyone to fall on ears so jaded as to be deaf, both from repetition and from many community members' personal experiences.

It is generally viewed as unacceptable to make moral or value judgments about people based on genetic characteristics. When that genetic characteristic is sex, we call it sexism for short A judgment that relies on sex is sexist, the person who makes such judgments habitually is a sexist. These are abbreviated terms with specific meanings The claim that an act or person cannot be sexist because of some power relationship that exists between groups to which the people involved belong will not attract a ban, but will raise the question of whether the claimant is actually evil or merely stupid, since the behavior remains equally unacceptable regardless of vocabulary.

As long as a group or movement continues to take the idea of patriarchy as an axiom, there can be no useful dialog. The axiom changes a political ideology into a religion. Fighting a theoretical patriarchy when its existence cannot be questioned is like trying to end poverty when poverty is defined as the low quartile of the population by income. The definition itself makes a 'win' impossible.

Finally, for good or ill, the process and practice of masculinity is and always has been in large part defined by the way that heterosexual women react to heterosexual male behavior. If you want to know why, after half a century of 'fighting gender stereotypes', the modern man still won't open up emotionally, you need look no farther than the nearest "Male Tears" mug. If you want to know why so many men seem to be laser-focused on coitus to the exclusion of more ethereal relationship aspects, look at the derision and vitriol heaped on anyone who appears to be disinclined or unsuccessful. Men as a group, do these things because women, as a group, demand it of them, and all the pearl-clutching op-eds in the world will not change that. If the problem of toxic standards is to be solved in a lecture hall, then it needs to be a lecture hall full of girls.

Thanks for being open and reaching out. I haven't read the other comments in reply, but I hope you're getting the kind of info you're looking for.

Personally, my main problem with the more recent brands of feminism is this notion of us VS them, or one side having it worse. The more anybody on either side takes that kind of mindset, the less we can work together to get things done.

We kinda bring up two types of issues here :

Problems that actually affect both genders, but feminist activists and legislators paint as only affecting women, and caused by men (domestic abuse, sexual abuse and assault including rape, genital mutilation, etc)
Problems that are specifically male, or we believe disproportionately affect males (criminal justice bias, homelessness, education bias, paternity fraud, male disposability, etc)

I don't think we can really compare the genders with regards to "who has it worse." I would be more comfortable with saying "we have it equally bad" - but even saying that forces me to make some kind of broad value judgement about how bad we have it VS how bad women have it. Which again, is unproductive. Most of these issues are so different they're not comparable at all.

Smart feminists claim that solving feminist issues helps everybody. Depending on the issue - yes, that's correct. But the same is true the other way. Just as it elevates the male gender to have to fully consider and tackle the concept of consent - it elevates the female gender to look to reasons besides personal preference and convenience when deciding whether or not to cut a son's penis.

I will say that I was a strong feminist, until I invited a woman into my home, and she had her way with me. I had no idea that I could be a victim, since I knew obviously that my gender was the oppressive one. But yet I did not want to have the kind of encounter she wanted to, and she took what she wanted without asking. Because, of course I'd want it. I'm a man. That's what men want.

I can't answer your question about who is oppressed more. But I CAN tell you that there was no support system in place, no number that I could call, and the close friends I talked to either tried to give me a high five, tell me that I brought it upon myself, or tell me that what happened to me isn't actually possible

While we were in this me too moment, consent and sexual propiety was on everybody's mind. But only if it's a man initiating a woman. The villain is male. Being a victim during that time felt pretty oppressive to me.

There are plenty of posts and comments in this sub that I disagree with, so I'm speaking only for myself.

I just think that people should be treated as people. In my ideal world, there are no transgender people because there's no gender. You just do you, and it's not masculine or feminine, it's you. In my ideal world, gendered pronouns are as shocking and unthinkable as racial pronouns. I think we're very far from that world. Many (most?) people seem to be very sexist, including many (most?) self-identified feminists.

Men are certainly systematically oppressed. Most obviously, women are still explicitly excluded from the draft in the laws of many countries. The law is a system, and it contains language that explicitly disadvantages men. There is no longer any systematic legal oppression of women in any major liberal democracy to my knowledge, but there is still systematic oppression of men.

I see nothing to suggest that this is going away. On the contrary, just two years ago California passed a law that requires corporate boards to contain at least 1-3 women, depending on size. This creates situations in which it's illegal to appoint a man to an empty board position. This clearly violates California's constitution which bans such discrimination. Maybe it'll be overturned. But the fact that it passed the legislature, and was signed by the governor, and apparently none of them saw anything wrong with it - they saw it as a good thing - shocks and frightens me. I feel like there was a time, a few decades ago, when most people would have understood that this is not the direction we should be going, that it's not progressive. I feel like somehow we're backsliding.

And yes a genderswapped version of this law would have shocked and frightened me too, exactly as much, because the problem is the same. I'm just against judging people by sex. But of course we both know that no law that required the hiring of men over women, even in a female-dominated profession, would ever pass in California or anywhere in the free world. The idea is ludicrous. Yet an incredible number of people see nothing wrong with this insane law that actually passed.

I've already written several long paragraphs and I've barely scratched the surface of what I want to say. Sexism is everywhere. It hardly even makes sense to list examples because it's so pervasive. Take any situation, genderswap it, and ask yourself if it would be treated the same.

There's an ancient prejudice, possibly found in every human society in history, that women (and children) should be helped and coddled by society, while men should make their own way in life. A large amount of what passes for "feminism" seems to be variations of this old prejudice. It's about helping women with problems, and not helping men with the exact same problems, and if you ask why they think it makes sense to explicitly discriminate by sex, the answer seems to be that they think men and women are different, fundamentally different, and the solutions to their problems should be different. It's an explicitly sexist view of the world. I hate it and I always have. I don't identify as male or female. I just want the madness to end.

There are a lot of men's rights activists on this sub who also seem to think that men and women are fundamentally different. As I said, I'm speaking only for myself.

Do you think that men are oppressed

MRAs do not consider men to be oppressed and in fact do not generally use the term "oppressed" for either gender. That's purely a feminist term and is too vague, too emotional to have a place in discussions between MRAs.

MRAs are more specific and fact-based in discussion than feminists. So instead of saying, "Men are oppressed", MRAs will refer to specific areas of institutional discrimination against men.

For example, MRAs are very aware of the gender sentencing gap which sees men given sentences 63% longer than women (23 months extra), on average, for the same crimes after controlling for prior criminal history and other relevant factors.

That's on top of the fact that women are less likely than men to be charged in the first place, more likely to have charges dropped, more likely to get bail while awaiting trial, less likely to be convicted, less likely to be sentenced to jail and women serve a smaller percentage of their sentence before being paroled than men do.

Talking about specific areas of discrimination such as criminal justice is more productive than vague wailing about oppression. But feminists need to resort to the latter because you have very few remaining grounds for complaint about women's place in society. Women today have more legal rights than men do, women's problems receive far more attention from government and far more taxpayer funding than men's problems do, educational institutions and employment markets have been skewed in women's favour. So feminists who want to continue riding the gravy train of female grievance have to speak in vague terms such as "oppression" in order to avoid people looking too closely at their claims and noticing they are baseless.

In short, feminism is an ideology built solely on emotion while the men's rights movement is based in fact & reason. That's why the terminology used by the two groups of people differs so greatly.

Men are certainly oppressed and face sexism (just like women, but both in a different ways) Now for your other question i think men and women have it both just as hard but in different ways, one reason why i think it’s a bit harder for men tho is that at least women’s problems are heard while men’s problems are ignored. It’s hard to make progress if everyone thinks your movement is useless.

No one has it "worse". Everyone has their own unique issues.

Feminism is a supremacy group. It divides and then makes claims that women are some how entitled to special priviliges because of a conspiracy theory feminists call "patriarchy" and it truly is a conspiracy theory. Easily disproven, too.

In a way, modern women have it worse because of feminism. They all get lumped in as supremacists because the media would have us believe feminism represents all women. But that is like saying the KKK represents all white people.

It's very illogical to say you believe in equality, and then start with an (invalid) premise that men and women are not equal. But that is another story.

1) No, men aren't "oppressed", and neither are women. The concept, in modern first world countries at least, is far too simplistic. You can't make judgements like this based purely on gender identity. Individual cases will vary greatly.

2) Neither gender "has it worse" than the other. Again, individual cases vary wildly. See my previous point

One of the problems with your starting point is that you assume, as valid, blanket concepts such as systemic oppression of one gender by another, and the notion that one entire gender may be, as a whole, better off than the other. Real life doesn't work like that, although this point of view is typical of feminist thinking. And welcome to the subreddit. Everyone is welcome here.

I have read your responses below, and I really believe that you are interested in dialogue, so I want to respond. As a rule I dont like the overuse of personal experiences, but I think it relevant here;

I grew up with feminism. My mother was a huge fan of the suffragettes and 70s feminism had a formative impact on my thinking (and I hope on my behaviour). I passionately supported the idea of equality that it espoused. I then worked for over 30 years in heavily female dominated and 'right on' organisations. In this time I saw a lot of things that shocked me. I heard women tell me direct about how they had gone to shelters with false tales of abuse simply to get rehoused. I heard women tell me how they were with partners who had never abused them but after arguments they called police in anger and got him arrested and taken away. I saw middle class women (who had far more priveliged backgrounds than me) use organisational womens strategies and policies to further their careers. I heard men tell horrific tales about abuse by women, both current and historic. At the same time I heard from female colleagues that women do not commit acts of violence except for defensive reasons. I heard female professionals announce that women do not sexually abuse others. I heard from a man who had been raped how he called a rape crisis line for help and was told to 'f* ck off'. As an insider I heard feminists vitriolic comments about the likes of Erin Pizzey and Susan Steinmetz for raising the facts about abusive women. I saw how feminist groups opposed the introduction of approaches to deal with violent men because it would take funding away from women. What bothered me about all of this was not the facts. They happened. That is life. The problem was that feminism simply ignored any inconvenient reality, and attacked anyone who raised such issues. That is the real danger, and that is when you know that you have gone from a proper campaign for equality to something more insidious, more dogma driven and at times almost cult like. It silences debate and opposition, and that is when I really have a problem.

In its current iteration, feminism is a good idea gone bad. Until feminists are able to hold mature discussions about inconvenient facts like false rape allegations and womens violent and abusive behaviour we will not get anywhere. This has to include the fact that in some areas men are treated worse than women. An example is the criminal justice system where sentences for the same crime are far lower for women. Instead of simply acknowledging this we get campaigns to do more to keep women out of prison. Its not a bad idea in iteslf, but when applied to women and not men it rubs salt in the wound.

I could go on but I will stop for now.

If you are against female on male rape, paedophilia and abuse then I've got some bad news for you you probably aren't a feminist because feminists don't even believe that any of what I describe can happen to a men. Alternatively if they do believe it can happen they try and downplay it and pretend it's a non-issue.

Worse they will often go out of their way to claim that men even like it in the case of female paedophilia. Oh and yes it is feminists that do that there are others too but I constantly see this bullshit from feminists where they claim to 'care about men too' and then when there's a teenager who gets blackmailed by an older married teacher into 'having sex' ( Anyone else would call it rape if it was a man doing this to a woman ) they actually and claim the boys in these situations enjoy it.

Come on, people, learn to recognize the trolls. You're tossing out pages and pages and pages of text because some troll put the same worm in the water that half a dozen people a week drop into the water in here, and last week was the same thing, and so was the week before that.

She isn't curious, she's intentionally wasting your time. "I am a curious feminist, so could you answer my questions ..." is clearly a trope being mined by the people brigading this subreddit.
