Side note: she's also trans and while trans people have their own issues, as a female myself, I feel like she will never understand what it's like to grow up as a female. And talking about how society is male dominant and she's taking power back when she herself hasn't had to grow up dealing with that because she didn't transition until later.

I do agree that women can't be sexist, but not by the logic espoused in this post. I've also got a response to the part about women being the "weaker, less dominant gender..."

Here's my argument on why I think women can't be sexist. I'd love to consider rebuttals and such, of course:

Sexism can refer to many things, but I think it's important to locate it in a particular time and place for discursive reasons. In the United States (and, I suppose we could include Canada and much of Western Europe here, too), "sexism" refers to an organizing principle by which men benefit from the oppression of women. It is asymmetrical, hierarchical, pervades all of our social, economic, and legal institutions, and is unconsciously acted out and maintained by both men and women.
Therefore, women cannot mobilize sexism against men. They can certainly discriminate against men on the basis of sex, and they can also create institutions or subcultures in which sexism might be reversed, at least theoretically, but they can't "be sexist against men". I suppose a corollary is that men can't really "be sexist against women" either, because sexism is more like an unsymbolized or implicit rule that governs the perceptions and behaviors of the subjects of this culture.

Here's my response to women being the "weaker, less dominant gender..."

I agree. Women are, on average, physically smaller and weaker than men, less aggressive. They're also different psychologically and socially in many ways. That's why I consider myself a benevolent sexist.

I'm still developing the idea, but basically, insofar as it pertains to the current post, a benevolent sexist acknowledges his internalized sexism and seeks to retain the benefits of sexism while being conscious of and calling into question its problems.

For example, consider that men are generally stronger and more aggressive and dominant than women. Well, maybe it's a good thing if we have men available to stand up to other men and to protect women from other men. There's an argument for men to be in positions of power and leadership. Of course, women shouldn't be excluded from these positions, but women's ascension to such positions shouldn't be regarded as threatening to men. Also, I'm not asserting that one gender is somehow objectively better or superior to another, but I am acknowledging that our culture affords certain advantages to men and disadvantages to women. Nothing inherently wrong with that, we just need to act accordingly.

Well, I lost my train of thought there, but wanted to post this anyway, and I can clarify if needed.
