Male teachers can be excellent for children and sadly there isn't enough of them. Going into education as a man is considered suspicious, and every parent will question your motives. The children however, usually know better. It's a rewarding career, and every day is different, but it's not for the faint of heart.

A good (woman) friend of mine was an elementary school principal for many years. She would share with me that they were always very happy to get a qualified male applicant for a position, because it did seem to help the boys in the (troubled, low-income) district, but the female teachers would have it out for them.

For example, a male teacher putting his arm on the back of a female student would be remarked upon as questionable behavior, when the female teachers touch and hug their students all the time.

But being a teacher is a thankless low pay awful horrible job that nobody would want to do.

Those men are lucky enough to be able to get a job wearing a rubber suit in a hot room cleaning sludge and acid out of tanks and machines for lower pay because they can can work 80 hours a week if they want to and never see their families. Women can only dream of such an opportunity.

When I was in primary school (elementary to you yanks), we had no male staff other than the caretaker who came in after school; ALL of the teachers and staff were female.

These were kids aged 4-11 and I remember in Year 3 when I was about 7 or 8, we had a supply (substitute) teacher for a day called Mr Timms. He was quite young, maybe mid-late 20s and after introducing himself to the class, he asked if anybody had any questions and one girl put her hand up and asked "How can you be a teacher? You're a man!"

That's not a healthy environment for children to grow up in and assume gender roles for a job such as teaching.

In Australia, only about 10% of teachers are males and schools will give priority to male teachers but it seems like it's an industry men aren't too persuaded to join

I'm a male teacher willing to teach any grade from k-12. You wouldn't believe how many females I have seen considered for elementary level teaching positions before me. It's almost like they go out of their way to have a female teach grade 3. I'd teach grade 3, I just want a full time job.

I've been on the sub list for over 5 years. I have great evaluations. I've been told that it's a sham that I don't have a contract. Yet, it's a yearly occurrence to see female teachers fresh out of college get teaching jobs before me.

It's frustrating and has had me debate quitting what I do. I'm sure I'm not the only male in this position.

Because the feminist machine benefits in two ways:

They can lobby for policies that put pressure on male-dominated jobs, but not female ones.
They can keep using the message that women are "forced" into childcare careers, and cry patriarchy when that system sends a message to younger boys and girls about their future career expectations.

What a shame. Some of the most memorable teachers I had in high school and currently have in college are male. That's not to say the female teachers were bad, I just seemed to get more out of male taught classes. I may be biased, being a male myself, but I have talked to some of my female classmates who agree with me on that.

There was a thread a couple months ago where we were talking with a teacher.

Someone asked, 'What about the small number of men in your profession? What is being done?'

She says back, 'Yeah sometimes I notice it. We have discussed it.'.

I said back, 'Holy shit that is pathetic. That is doing nothing at all. You should see the push for females in IT. You people are just talking about it?'

I got kind of torn apart for saying that. I don't think it was here in mensrights.

Pro tip: don't even consider getting into teaching if you're a man. Why would you put yourself at risk for false accusations like that when you have, more or less, zero means to defend yourself? Who in their right mind would do that?

Honestly I don't think there should be. likewise, there shouldn't be any programs helping women get into stem fields or any other method of forced equality.

Doesn't surprise me at all, you know, all that crap they keep making up. Plus they forget the stigma and scrutiny that they give men who do want to teach.

They're either classified as 'homosexual' or 'predatory' and if they don't subscribe to a particular ideology...then it's a death-knell for their career to boot.

Maybe I don't get how the whole 'male privilege' works...but from personal experience, I don't see it at all.

Unless we address the hostility directed towards men with an interest in supporting children who aren't their own (i,e ascribing untoward, sexual motives and misinterpreting interactions), none of them are going to flock to these positions in the first place.

I'm a teacher and I love my job. However, this job pays like shit. That's the only thing I hate about it. But I don't do it for the money though, because i wouldn't be there anymore if I was there only for the money.

That may be one reason why there not more men in teaching. Also, many parents complaining about anything, anytime. I had a guy some day who called me a pedophile because I said I loved my job and loved children.

Not so fun to be called like that TBH.

My department is 90% female. Each semester we have meetings designed to further increase diversity hires. These are defined as people of color first, women second, disabled third.

I know a surprising amount of women teachers and they all had trouble finding work when they finished training. My little brother had schools biting his hand off whilst he was still training(he wasn't even doing that well)

I once considered being a teacher. My mom suggested it as just about all the women on her side of the family had done, including her (she still does).

I really wanted to, even. But I saw how hostile it is. Always under the eye of suspicion. And lately, likely to have opinions which the other teachers would disagree with, such as effective methods of teaching and thoughts on politics and history, which would mean being constantly harassed.

Now I drive a truck and make more than a teacher, without having to have gone to college and I'm only 25. Maybe I'll try later in life, I don't know.

Where I went to school we had loads of male teachers though one of them got accused by one of the girls of touching her breast after he shouted at her for behaving badly. Even though it was cleared it pretty much ended his career.

I'm not surprised Men don't get into teaching, that's a knife edge I wouldn't want in my life.

Men can be great teachers when they want to, its the effect of all the accusations and discrimination that discourages men from joining the workforce as a teacher.

If a male were to become a teacher, they would be classed as suspicious and a possible pedophile. the parents would question him and, unless he provides a good reason as to why he joined the teacher profession, would not like their kid(s) to be taught by him unless absolutely forced too.

Male Teachers are as good, sometimes better, as their female counterparts. it's just that the effect of male discrimination and false accusations that killed most males' desire to teach.

I sort of feel like this is hypocritical. We go from praising Google and the like for realizing that affirmative action for women is bad, but then we are angry that there isn't any for teachers. Seems like a double standard
