Once again, people seem to be overlooking psychology because "I'm not bothered by it".

As socioeconomic trends have shifted, parents end up working more and spending less time with their children simply to make ends meet. This provides children far less time with a primary role model. In addition to this, we now live in a technological era where audio-visual media is more popular and prevalent than human interaction and written word. The culmination of these factors is, as some academics tried to point out decades ago, television and the internet are heavily influencing developing youth.

Of course, we all know that it's not just limited to advertising. Gone is MacGuyver, Star Trek, or Quantum Leap. Accessible television programming portraying adult men as competent, creative role models has declined dramatically. Men are depicted as buffoons or handsome but shallow skirt chasers in most shows, excluding the ever popular procedural crime drama which are specifically not for young audiences.

If you're over 20 and had a good upbringing, maybe you've become resistant to this constant media messaging... but if you're a developing youth, you're fucked.

People in this sub are often quick to come down on male feminists and cuckolds, but rarely seem to stop and ask "where do these people come from?" Well, gentlemen and ladies, here's part of the answer. And as any gardener will tell you, if you want to stop weeds, you have to get to the root of the problem.

Good post.

[–]catholicwannabe2 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

parents end up working more and spending less time with their children simply to make ends meet.

FYI, fairly rigorous studies have confirmed that parents today (fathers and mothers) spend far more time with their children then in the 70s, even while working more hours away from home.

[–]Debellatio 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

what is the difference in time, then? do they socialize with peers less and with the children more?

there are only so many hours in a day, after all. If more time is both going to work AND to children, what is that time taken away from?

[–]catholicwannabe2 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think this is the article I was remembering. Seems a bit pop-psychology to me, but who knows.

i try not to watch T.V. and I read books. I know exactly how my son and daughter should be raised, and by the type of women who will join me. The problem now is finding her. Going to have to make some money to do that.

[–]btmims 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You've caught some flack, but you're not wrong. If I really wanted to have kids/a family, and didn't have a serious job or meaningful savings, I would be looking for someone that had a decent job and savings, since babies cost money, and my only meaningful contribution off the rip would be creating the baby and caring for it so my partner can work. If you have a job and savings, your viable partners greatly expands, since its easy to be/become poor, but hard to attain resources. If your partner is set, too, all the better.

[+]Zoenboen -16 points-15 points-14 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

That's sexist. Stop.

[–]1337Gandalf 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Wanting kids is sexist? fuck off.

[–]Zoenboen -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That's not what was said and not what I was referring to. Their point that they need money to find an intelligent woman was sexist and unnecessary.

[–]Neolions 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well it's kinda true. Think about it. How many woman (even smart one) would like to go for the low grade man that has kids and little money. That is a large commitment so a smart woman would probably look else where. Having excess money means you can support yourself and your child which is very attractive to woman. I don't believe it's sexist because it's just how things are. Money is everything now these days.

[–]Zoenboen 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The implication was that women only want money. I guess I read into it too far, which is fair. I'm just becoming more sensitive to women bashing here because there has been an influx of people who seem younger or jilted so its happening more. We should be better than that.

[–]Neolions 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Money and status go hand and hand. Money is just a big part of gaining it. It's very rare that a woman would date/marry a lower status man. Think about it, will a normal woman date a poor man?

[–]LordFishFinger 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Do you apply the same logic to media that supposedly demeans women?

[–]Clockw0rk 46 points47 points48 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely.

If the media, any form of media, is depicting a group of people in a consistently negative light, then that is in effect propaganda. And propaganda, as everyone from government to advertisers know, is highly effective in influencing people through repeat exposure to a consistent message.

Nuance is something we understand through a diversity of thoughts and opinions, alongside the authority of scientific method.

Dumb people exist! Pretty people exist too. But so do many, many other kinds of people. And if you're deliberately limiting your diversity, your selectively messaging your audience.

If advertising depicting women as only dumb or pretty in the 1950s was sexist (which I do believe it was), then advertising depicting men as only dumb or pretty in the 2010s is also sexist. That is equality. Equal treatment of gender on the same issue.

[–]LordFishFinger 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

If advertising depicting women as only dumb or pretty in the 1950s was sexist (which I do believe it was)

It's very commendable that you are consistent on this. I'm just wondering if the 100+ people who upvoted you are as well. This sub mocks feminists overreacting to media a lot, often due to reasons analogous to those in the article.

[–]Zoenboen 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

But feminists do often overreact to their portrayals in the media and certainly aren't standing up for men in the name of equality. History is repeating itself in the same manor with different subjects - but its okay because men are dumb and deserve it this time around.

I think what you are seeing here a lot is a loss of sensitivity to these issues because we are now the targets. Women can choose to be portrayed as "sexy". They aren't demeaned by feminists for it(@) but if we enjoy it, we are. Men are dumb and pretty and it's okay because equality isn't on their agenda anymore.

Bottom line is, that's their fight to fight, and this is ours. You are almost presenting a false dichotomy here.

@ Actually, they are by some feminists, which is the ultimate mind fuck of the movement. Women have been empowered to decide how they should be portrayed, and sometimes it's the feminists who ironically scream the loudest, when they decide, that the woman in question should dress this way or act another. Sexual liberation, and yet they don't support it. It's very mixed. If a woman goes on TV tomorrow wearing a bikini saying she doesn't agree with modern feminism her own peers will slut shame her faster than anyone.

[–]bakedpotato486 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

citation needed. You mean like video games cause murder?

[–]wanked_in_space 58 points59 points60 points 10 years ago (48 children) | Copy Link

Well that's a straw man argument of I've ever seen one.

He's saying that television influences a kid's understanding of the world, just like a video game can to a lesser extent.

[+]Gnometard -18 points-17 points-16 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Could you cite it though? A claim was made, dude asked for proof, and you commented this.

Back up your claim or stfu about it.

Reals are more important, and useful, than feels. A claim like that without citation is definitely feels

[–]wanked_in_space 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I cited a few messages down.

[–]Endless_Summer 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Do you need citation that the sky is fucking blue too, dipshit?

[–]Gnometard -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

That's not how things work. The sky is visible to all with the ability to see and Access to a window. I could easily find objective information showing that the sky is blue and why.

This claim is not the same. I've heard arguments for such, but they're typically based on a poor interpretation of statistics and very very very little concern for what the potentially infinite contributing factors may be.

Would your argument hold up of used when somebody asks for proof of a deity?

Absolutely not. I didn't even express my views in the comment, the fact that it is so heavily down voted is pretty clear evidence that this topic is a matter of dogma than objective truth.

If it were objective truth, it would be very easy to prove it without a doubt.

[–]Endless_Summer 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Can you provide a source that shows that the sky is "visible to all" and that everybody has access to a window?

Where did I say that the OP thinks that TV can make people into murderers? I compared his argument to a completely FAILED argument which was almost identical.

You know about the whole Jack Thompson thing, right? His claims which turned into a national hysteria and were completely debunked when actual data became available?

[–]Neolions 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think if you had taken a history class you would understand that the media usually influences people and there stance on subjects. Take WW11 and the how the newspaper was censored and controlled to make the people hate the other.

[–]wanked_in_space 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I never said it ruined children, I said it influenced their understand of the world.

An article from Paediatrics and Child Health states:

The influence of the media on the psychosocial development of children is profound.

[+]xNOM -20 points-19 points-18 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

I never said it ruined children, I said it influenced their understand of the world.

Sure. But this discussion is not occurring in a vacuum. It is in the context of a discussion of men.

Fact submitted by article: Advertisers now portray men the way they portrayed women in the 1950s: as either dumb or pretty

Fact submitted by you: The influence of the media on the psychosocial development of children is profound.

They meet in the obvious question: does the media cause children to see men as either dumb or pretty? There is zero evidence for this either way, as far as I know.

[–]wanked_in_space 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Just to be clear, I'm not arguing what TV is teaching children about men and women, but I am arguing that if TV is teaching children that men are dumb, this will affect their world view. I then provided evidence that TV does affect a child's world view. Other than a study which looks at this exact question, there is nothing more I can do.

[+]xNOM -13 points-12 points-11 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Yes but the argument you have just made there is exactly Jack Thompson's argument. Just replace "teach kids that men are dumb" with "teach game players to murder."

In other words, there is no real evidence that TV is "teaching children than men are dumb."

[–]wanked_in_space 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

You're equating making people kill with clouding people's opinion of men. The more accurate comparison is that video games desensitize kids to violence. Which is completely different.

[+]xNOM -9 points-8 points-7 points 10 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

How "similar" the behaviors are is irrelevant. There is no evidence that media clouds people's opinions of men.

Science does not work through analogies. Science works by taking testable ideas and looking in the real world to see if they are true or not. Until there is actual data, this whole "clouds people's opinion of men" is just a hypothesis with as much evidence as Jack Thompson had.

EDIT:

I also wonder if there is any data to support the idea that games desensitize kids to violence. I have not checked, but I am doubtful.

To be fair, do you have any evidence to the contrary? Because if not both of you are speculating and neither can prove the other wrong.

I'm inclined to disagree with you personally, but I have no evidence to back that up nor do I care enough about proving myself to you to attempt to find any.

To be fair, do you have any evidence to the contrary? Because if not both of you are speculating and neither can prove the other wrong.

I'm not the one making any claims here about if tv makes children view men as "dumb or pretty." Therefore I am not exactly sure what it is that you expect me to produce.

[–]HalfysReddit 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

You mean like video games cause murder?

This quote from you implies that you are making a claim that the argument that "television and the internet are heavily influencing developing youth" (the quote you responded to originally) is just as ridiculous of an argument as "video games cause murder" (which is clearly inaccurate).

So, if you are claiming that the comment you originally responded to is in any way flawed, citing a lack of provided evidence is just as applicable to your own argument.

No. To be more clear I am making a claim that the argument that television and the internet are making children view men as "either dumb or pretty" is completely unfounded and there is zero evidence for it. Moreover, similar mass media arguments like the video games murder hysteria were shown without a doubt to be completely wrong when data became available.

You're literally arguing politics on the internet.

[–]Clockw0rk 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

You mean like video games cause murder?

Nope. That's an overreach with poor academic standing. Moral panic, not science.

The science says that media violence influences higher aggression in children.

With context to childhood development, research has shown that educational television is beneficial but television in general should be avoided by children under the age of 2.

Additional research suggests that media can influence nutrition and attitudes towards tobacco and alcohol.

Don't mistake what the press spoon feeds you to be absolute truth or complete bullshit. Peer reviewed studies, linked above, are your friend.

[+]xNOM -23 points-22 points-21 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

LOL Noone is claiming TV has zero effects. This does nothing to answer the question of how does TV make children think men are dumb or pretty? And why are you sure it's not the other way around? I see no difference between this and letting them drink cola.

How about you stop asking me questions and you, you know, read.

[+]xNOM -15 points-14 points-13 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I read all three abstracts actually. I concluded that I did not need to read the full articles. That's what abstracts are for. They showed me that the articles were irrelevant for answering the question:

[–]Zoenboen 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You are simply the worst troll of all time. There is an example given of media portrayals. You've been given how this affects children and can, as a human with a brain understand the obvious correlation. There is no need for a new study. You need to understand logic and stop fighting a losing battle here.

[+]xNOM -9 points-8 points-7 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Your argument is as evidence-based as "women who report rape have to be believed." Noone here can produce a single peer-reviewed study to back their assertion that the media CAUSE man-hatred. The fact is, noone knows. All I am hearing are 12-year-old emo-arguments which sound like they're coming directly from Anita Sarkeesian.

[–]Zoenboen 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I came back to my inbox and I read this again. You are clearly an agent provocatuer of the worst kind. Your history shows you are in fact a SJW and believe fully in Anita Sarkeesian's camp. You are obsessed with women and gaming as if it matters in the grand scheme of things - especially compared to the clear evidence and facts laid out in front of you. Your goal is to make men say women are bad, whores or something stupid while most people here don't believe that. You are trying to draw the actual 12 year olds into arguments to make men look bad.

You are what is wrong with people. Nothing you post isn't a fight. You have an agenda and it's division and hatred. Stop. For humanity, stop. Do something productive with your life.

Noone here can produce a single peer-reviewed study to back their assertion that the media CAUSE man-hatred. The fact is, noone knows.

This was presented to you numerous times. The media causes children to be told what to believe. The media portrays men as dumb. It's really not hard. If it was a portrayal of bimbo women, most of us would be equally against it. You know you'd be up in arms about it being a feminist yourself. Please stop fighting men in the name of women, it's frankly stupid.

You want things to change, we want them to stop before they get out of control. You want to outright dismiss what's presented because men, to you, are worthless. It's sickening. You are here to just cause problems and should be banned from this sub and Reddit altogether. And therein lies the problem - you won't, because these posts are encouraged. It's a safe space, for trolls and feminists who take it a bit too far, but not for men who want respect for being men.

Please show me a single single peer-reviewed study to back their assertion that the media CAUSE man-hatred. You can't. Because there isn't any. This means that no conclusion can be made. Not that you have free reign to just make up shit. This is what SJWs like Anita Sarkeesian do. This is what you are doing. She was proven wrong by more specific research.

Please get a basic education about how the scientific method works. You are an SJW retard incapable of critical thinking.

The relationship between media and the views of society have been well documented. The current expert would be the advertising industry which year after year profits from changing people's minds, or putting a new idea in a mind.

[+]xNOM -9 points-8 points-7 points 10 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

ROFL obviously not. Where is the evidence that media CAUSES negative views of men? This is the level of stupidity I expect from feminists. i.e. The media CAUSES women to think they're fat.

EDIT: This "pulling ideas out of your ass" method is exactly where "rape culture" came from.

[–]madhate969 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Maybe there is some misunderstanding. Are you saying that radio commercial that have been around since radio began, tv commercials, posters, billboards and all other forms of media advertising have never changed a person's mind?

Are you saying noone ever bought something because of a commercial?

There has never been a product jingle that got stuck in someone's head?

All of these are media influencing people thoughts.

It's a widely known fact, proven repeatedly. Denying it make this sub look more like conspiracy and devalue the good work around here

[+]xNOM -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

No I'm saying when you make a claim, you need to provide evidence for it. We don't let Anita Sarkeesian or Jack Thompson off the hook when they pull this crap, making the exact same argument. I like this one best

http://www.jstor.org/stable/2489508?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents

BTW do you have any studies to support your counter argument that media advertising has no effect on people? Or do people who disagree with you the only that have to provide documentation?

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Here are 40 scholarly studies. Do any of these meet your requirements?

LOL no. None of them have to do with men being perceived as "dumb or pretty." You cannot claim that these "40 scholarly studies" support the fact that the media causes men to be perceived as "dumb or pretty" and then turn around and say that these same "40 scholarly studies" do NOT support the idea that video games cause violence or misogyny. This is social justice retard behavior. More specific studies have shown that there is NO correlation between video games and violence/misogyny.

BTW do you have any studies to support your counter argument that media advertising has no effect on people?

LOL I don't need to. I'm not the one claiming that the mass media makes people think men are either "dumb or pretty."

edit:

not accepting the claim that "the mass media makes people think men are either "dumb or pretty" does not constitute a claim that "media advertising has no effect on people." If you can't tell the difference, then you have severe mental problems.

I'm under the impression this is largely because while women have historically watched more television (and therefore been the target demographic for commercials), this effect is even stronger today as men are more likely to consume their media through the internet (where the advertising landscape is very different).

It's not part of any agenda to influence society, it's all part of an agenda to convince people to spend their money. And as it's women that are mostly going to be seeing these advertisements, the ads are designed for their consumption.

[–]aerovado 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It has been shown that women make/influence about 80% of all household purchases.

[–]skee_ 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

This is true, but it reflects terribly on womankind as a whole that these adverts are effective. Women should oppose them as well. Only an insecure, childish, petty narcissist enjoys seeing an entire class of people constantly degraded.

[–]HalfysReddit 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Uh, have you seen some advertisements geared towards men? Pretty damn embarrassing as well.

[–]skee_ 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Like what?

[–]HalfysReddit 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Well a quick google search brought up this, this, and this video.

Then there was some ad recently for some game where it was just some actress chick half naked walked through a battlefield and telling the viewer to "play with her".

[–]skee_ 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Hot chicks using their sexual power to achieve goods and services and freebies. What's the problem? The problem is that some young girls get insecure about their bodies. Okay, that's a fair complaint.

But I'm not arguing against sexuality in media, I'm arguing against portraying men as fucking imbeciles.

[–]HalfysReddit 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Uh, women aren't achieving shit in those ads. The ads aren't about women at all, the ads are about how important sex is to men and how it drives our purchases. "Buy AXE because you won't get laid without it".

I'm not talking at all about how it makes women feel, I'm talking about how embarrassing it is that men are assumed to be such horndogs that simply making them think about sex will get them to eat at a certain place or buy a certain shampoo. Which I guess is actually portraying men as imbeciles in its own way, except these aren't ads designed for women.

[–]skee_ 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

"Buy AXE because you won't get laid without it".

Right. Because the male has to really, really try to get laid. Whereas the female...sits there. How is that demeaning to the female? She's the boss. This is not unique to humans; it's the rule in the mammalian animal kingdom. So suck it up.

I'm talking about how embarrassing it is that men are assumed to be such horndogs

Men are horndogs. If men weren't hordogs the species would have died out a long time ago. Why do you shame male sexuality? That's an awful thing to do. It's important to note however that while men are indeed horndogs, they are not rapists; feminists seem to miss the latter point. Also, many women are horndogs. They were traditionally called "nymphos".

Which I guess is actually portraying men as imbeciles in its own way, except these aren't ads designed for women.

No, they explicitly portray men as imbeciles and yes, they are targeted at women. Like I said, it's extremely sad that so many women need to rely on degrading male images to feel good about themselves. That's not healthy, it's certainly not healthy for their boys.

[–]HalfysReddit 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Dude whatever. You clearly see this as an us vs them thing and you just want to win, so I'm not going to bother with you. If you're not embarrassed by the ads I mentioned, great. Go eat your burger king and buy your Axe without shame.

I hate Axe, but only a commie does'n have some love for Burger King. You know, flame-broiled and everything.

[–]perfectEarlobes 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Here is the thing where i look at this and think..... nope, don't give a shit, not a big deal at all.

Advertising is all about appealing to customers.

Most of those ads are funny. Love the Old spice commercial series, even the KFC one, if anything that is advertising how mundane married life can be.

The only one i found gratuitous, if you can call an ad that (because every single ad is on some level), was the Diet Coke ads. But they are appealing to women obviously and they are objectifying men.

You could look at it and say wow it makes men look like just a slab of meat, or that it paints women like they are dripping waiting for a cock......... or the whole is thing is a bit of mischief.

When Natalie Dormer was asked if women are objectified on TV or in film. Her response was "men are objectified as much as the women".

So when it concerns media, advertising, television or film.... everyone is objectified. That's the whole point, even down to the 6 o'clock News.

To me, this will never be an issue because it's advertising, if it's too offensive it won't sell, has it reached that point. Not be a long shot in my book.

But hey, everyone's different.

[–]mind-strider 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

My only problem is the blatant double standard, you could never get away with doing a gender flipped version of those ads.

[–]tallwheel 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep. I was thinking the exact same thing. I would be totally cool with the Diet Coke adds as long as the reverse were just as accepted. And today, it is not. It was in the past.

[–]yelruh00 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think /u/perfectEarlobes recognizes this and is saying that both sides shouldn't be offended because they are both objectified. If people are offended by an ad, then take a stance against that ad and against objectification of people in general. Don't say one is being objectified more than another because that can be a subjective opinion.

[–]perfectEarlobes 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are saying what i meant better than i can.

Advertising in my eyes can be an absolute work or art, clever, funny or the most shallow, tasteless piece of shit ever.

But it doesn't matter because it is all an attempt to get you to buy shit. Because it is so capitalist driven, any media that is spawned from is is like a form of media Darwinism.

If it works it will continue, if not then it won't.

All that matters is that you buy the product, buy into the brand. There is nothing too morally objectionable if it means that you are now their customer. Make women look like brainless baby machines, men llike dumb cavetrolls, children a biological hazard etc.

Should the viewer disengage because their attempts repel more than attract, they will try something else even if it means completely going against what was done in the past.

Nothing matters in advertising, social commentary, a moral native, objectification etc..... just money, that's it and you can always rely on that.

[–]Azothlike 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Here is the thing where i look at this and think..... nope, don't give a shit, not a big deal at all.

It becomes a big deal when people complain about how advertising treats women and demand change because of it.

Yes, IMO, a good portion of Men's Rights is pointing at ridiculous things that feminists do to cause problems/drama, and explaining why they shouldn't do them, how they're wrong.

If you believe nobody should care about sexist advertising, that's fine -- but the 'big deal' simply means that this is the evidence you can use to bury the issue when people complain about sexist advertising against women as if it's some huge problem.

[–]Argosy37 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Advertising is all about appealing to customers.

This was the truest part of your post. Advertisers are portraying men as dumb and women as smarter than them because women like to be told they're smarter than men. However, the reverse is not true. Men don't like to be told they're smarter than women - in fact if asked men will usually say women are smarter than them.

Remember, women account for about 85 percent of all consumer purchases. Until telling women they're smarter stops selling products to the majority of women, the ads won't stop.

[–]Wargame4life 51 points52 points53 points 10 years ago* (36 children) | Copy Link

This stuff really doesn't bother me at all, do you know why? because Im not a sensitive little snowflake who looks at adverts or the media for "role models" or get butt hurt because someone of my gender is portrayed a certain way.

If you want to think I am stupid because i am a man and that because you are a women you are smarter go ahead, you will find that your delusion will not impede my intelligence or improve yours, and if we are competing against each other for something your arrogance will be to my advantage.

I am well qualified and worked in a technical field that demanded intelligence beyond any doubt (to even get an interview you need a masters in either Physics or Maths). but I also box and look after myself so am muscular and fairly trendy looking. (i look like a bit like the male equivalent of a bimbo), for various reasons i started spending a lot of time with the Human resources department which were all 20 something blonde girly type girls, and they all thought i was some dumb male bimbo and would constantly sort of make fun and slap their own back about how i cant multitask and how stupid i am. Never bothered me at all, i actually found it quite funny, its only when by chance they saw some of my work and my comments in a professional manner (opinion piece on intranet) they were shocked it was from me.

If you are a competent determined reasonable man you should not be looking at the media or advertisements as some-kind of validation for who you are or what you represent. if anything they are reflection of the user base its appealing to.

e.g if i was interested in buying a new motorcycle and they tried to advertise it to me as a "fanny magnet" with women all flocking around it with their tits out pining over the rider, I would be offended, not for the women but at the fact they think i am so stupid and so unsophisticated, that this kind of obnoxious crass advert would appeal to me or convince me to buy a product.

The reason men and women are seen differently in the media is the same reason the film home alone would be received completely differently if you switch the role of kids and adults in the film.

i.e replace the wet bandits with two kids and replace kevin with a man and it takes a very disturbing twist.

Women are seen as children in society, because of that their "Misgivings" are seen as harmless trash.

that is the real reason this shit flies.

[–]dungone 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

because of that their "Misgivings" are seen as harmless trash.

No, their misgivings are seen as serious issues that must be addressed. Manspreading? That's worthy of government-sponsored public awareness campaigns and even arrest. "Ban Bossy?" Send that right up to the United Nations. Hell, why don't you just ban men from receiving food and water during humanitarian relief efforts. Let's not even get started with due process and false accusations. Harmless trash, indeed?

The fact is that you can literally major in gender studies and have an academic career in these "women's ways of knowing." Back in the 1950's, both men and women were portrayed in stupid ways and no one really cared. Then an entire demographic of massive idiots started infecting our culture with their bullshit Postmodernist theories and cherry picking of the facts. And this has led to an exacerbation of double standards where instead of being equally harmless to both genders, we as a society are no longer able to have a common sense discussion about anything regarding gender.

I guess I don't have perspective. I have three semesters under my belt from almost a decade ago. I have a fair amount of professors come down to my bar during happy hour, but they're all old dudes. I've been working my entire life, I guess thats why I think that this perspective is a little weird. In the bar/service industry women have very little pull. I have buddies with white collar jobs too, women are usually treated the same way. Not really shit on but not taken seriously. If academia is actually a gauntlet of feminist terror then I stand corrected. I just don't think it's really gotten that bad. It's always good to just let shit roll off your back, worry about your own shit when it comes to your education. Which you're paying for. I have too many friends that have spent six years in school and are still waiting tables. I'm drunk and rambling now. Be a fucking bro every once in a while

As a man I find it irritating but nothing to get too upset about. Boys are a different matter. Especially those with single mothers. It can't be healthy to raise boys in this sort of environment.

[–]Wargame4life 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

to be fair you are right that a boy being raised by a single mother (who believes and promotes this shite) would indeed be screwed by it. and its not a reflection of his ability to cope.

Unfortunately however thats true of many things and is the balance of liberty and freedom to believe what you wish.

Women who pull or promote this crap dont realise that to normal folk they just come across as moronic deluded bitter hags, in the same way a male chauvinist comes across poorly.

Mothers and fathers should be (and are) free to believe what they wish and naturally this will lead to lots of bizarre and unfortunate situations, but that is the lesser of two evils in policing what people can and cannot believe etc

[–]Tramm 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

to be fair you are right that a boy being raised by a single mother (who believes and promotes this shite)

That's part of the point though. The mother (or guardian) doesn't have to believe that shit.

Quoting OP here:

we now live in a technological era where audio-visual media is more popular and prevalent than human interaction and written word

And he's right. Today there are a lot more kid's being influenced by outside sources. The media and our peers are effectively raising us. Most kids don't live in the kind of household I grew up in as well as my parents. Where we had dinner at the table every night, I was in the living room with my parents till bed time, no cellphone, or internet.

[–]Zoenboen 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The problem is that men are promoting this too because it sells to women.

[–]moskova 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The thing is, whether aware of it or not, advertisements have an effect on everyone! They affect how we view ourselves, where we belong in a social hierarchy, and what we may consider valuable. Even if one was impervious to adverts, they would still have an effect on larger society (eg fashion trends), and thus likely effect you by non direct means. I would wager, if you look like a "male bimbo" the reason is because you have decided to aim for an image you and other value, and that is almost certainly a result of advertisements and fashion trends.

[–]Wargame4life -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

oh absolutely i completely agree it all has an effect and it will subconciously have an effect ( i am not immune from psychology), but that is true of all most all sensations or events to some degree.

yes advertisments and marketting manipulate. but outside of egregious extremes (like using the holocaust to sell chocolate or something) there has to be a artistic and creative freedom for them.

I disagree with most adverts and they hidden message they try and project, but i think they should have the freedom to do so, because insisting on standards is far more unjust and heavy handed because of the subjective nature of what is and isnt acceptable in that fine line context.

[–]moskova 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's an interesting issue, personally I draw the line at airbrushing of models in order to advertise products. Not only is airbrushing creating a truly unrealistic standard of beauty, but it also strikes me as dishonesty about the effectiveness of a particular product.

With regards to everything else, I don't believe censorship is a good option either, but perhaps social discourse and rejection of the methods employed is a better idea.

[–]wanked_in_space 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not a problem because men are stupid. It's a problem because children often learn things from television.

But you're so smart that you already knew this.

[–]dieselfrog 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well said and I agree. If you are a grown man this typically would not bother you. However, what if you are a young boy or impressionable male teen? The media is blasting you with messages every day. Those age groups simply lack the wisdom, experience and confidence to discard the messages as we do. They are the ones i'm concerned about. They are the ones that do not have the years of accomplishments, victories, achievements under their well-worn belts to see the bias as it is. All they know is that the academic system in the US is slanted towards female students. They see girls being placed on a pedestal and get asked "why can't you behave more like HER?". "Why can't you focus on your school work like SHE can?"

Then they turn to their media of choice to unwind from a stressful day and get inundated with this nonsense. How will this affect their self image - how will this affect the way they view the world? Its a very impressionable time for them. It's easy for us.

[–]Wargame4life 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

what if you are a young boy or impressionable male teen? The media is blasting you with messages every day.

Indeed they are and they are blasting you with hundreds of false messages and warped principles in other areas too.

the rational normal male, will learn to distrust the media and consider much media representation as being warped and contrived to fit a narrative, and this will serve him well.

If you genuinely live your life or your youth based on any media paradigms then you are going to struggle and be miserable regardless.

for example a show such as "the apprentice" from a young impressionable perspective shows completely the wrong lesson on "How to be successful in business".

the mass media is not your friend, it is merely a point of interest not a valid data point for life.

Time and time again in past studies (and no doubt future ones) there has been a shown link between the amount of tv you consume and the liklihood of holding certain false notions of things like romance or inter personal relationships.

Sanitising the media is too much, the user MUST learn as an important life lesson to distrust and disregard mass media social norms/cues.

The only way it concerns me is that I find female psychology ever more detached from reality. Anyone who tries to pull any version of "buffoon" on me is going to be told to fuck off in crystal clear terms. I don't care if they have a vagina, are president of the world bank, rocket scientist or Miss World. I'm reasonably fit but don't have the body of one of those models on the adverts. So women are told to picture me as the buffoon and are surprised when I turn out to be utterly in control of everything around me. Far more than super career woman typically is.

Reverse genders on the above (or even on your whole post for that matter) and this sounds a lot like something a woman would have written in the 1950's. 'The boys think I'm just some cute bimbo, but when they see my work they are all shocked that I am actually smarter than most of the boys!' To me, your post is actually supporting the opinion of the article.

apart from the fact my pay way was over 3 times more than theirs, and i had genuine scientific qualifications and a significant reputation outside of HR for my skill and ability/knowledge.

hardly a 1950's women's claim

No such thing as a perfect analogy.

The reason to be mad isn't because it is working on you but bc of the impact to society, look at how far we have fallen in the US, as liberals continue to get their way this kind of shit will just get worse.

[–]skee_ 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not just liberals promoting harmful messages. Conservatives are constantly droning on about "deadbeat dads" for example even though the majority of divorces are initiated by women and the father often gets screwed in family court. Conservatives should be supporting the MRM but they cling to outdated "man up" philosophies and general gynocentrism.

[–]Anarchistnation -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Conservatives should be supporting the MRM

That's the last thing we need is the support of those backwards nut jobs.

[–]Wargame4life 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

then you open up the portal to police content in video games movies and all other media etc.

its exactly the same argument. (which i reject)

[–]Mylon 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Free speech means we can say whatever we like without legal repercussions. It does not mean there cannot be social repercussions. Content should be policed, not with laws but with approval/disapproval. It takes time to enact social change.

[–]The_Punniest 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well that was pretty rational.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The problem arises from the run amok political correctness that doesn't allow any person to be portrayed as the butt of the joke, or the villain, without someone insisting an entire racial/ethnic/sex/whatever group is being unfairly stereotyped by it.

The only remaining "safe" targets are Nazis, zombies, and white men...because nobody is going to stand up in defense of any of them.

[–]fritzcat42 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Considering the way male rights activists are treated, in comparison to how women's rights activists at the time, it's hillarious and sad that more people aren't realize that they're essentially repeating history as the villian / oppressor.

[–]RebelWitch 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

you silly goose. don't you know it is okay to portray men as dumb or as objects for women be it sex or money? its just not okay to do that to women. jeez get with the new world order program <3

[–]DillipFayKick 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminists aren't looking for gender equality, they are looking for revenge (all the while denying there may have been good reasons for society to have been the way it was).

[–]Ovendice 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Television, movies and advertising are the only places where the Feminist Utopia exists anyway. So once we finally get rid of that (in the best interest of children) then women will have nothing.

And it DOES effect how people think: Media distorts reality to such an insane degree that women and most people in general actually believe that women have taken over the world! That most women are either CEOs, business owners, doctors and brilliant physicists.

When in reality on 2% of CEOs are women, most female business owners are a joke and only own home businesses on line or fluff shops that operate at a loss, are a minority of doctors who can't even stay in the profession and a tiny single digit of anything STEM.

I was the same way as everyone else until I started digging for the truth and the media certainly is never going to make it easy for you.

And in the real world, 99% of the women you have to deal with at businesses are dumber than rocks and as useless as pedals on a wheelchair and can't even show up to work at their seat warming jobs anyway.

Personally, I'm more offended when either gender is made to look stupid than when they're sexualized or used as eye candy. I think targeting a marketing demographic using sexy images of the opposite sex is fine. Scantily clad women in video games is fine. Sexy gardeners in Coke commercials is fine. Sexy people are fine, and they're lots of fun to look at. They also encourage people to lose weight and look better.

Portraying a whole gender as stupid, though. That's not really cool. You shouldn't have to put down the opposite gender in order to make your target gender feel better about themselves.

So, I think nowadays the feminists have gone too far. Since depicting women as stupid has become less acceptable, they have shifted their focus to trying to get rid of sexually "objectified" women in media. As MRA's we should keep our primary focus on men being depicted as dumb. If we worry about men being used as eye candy, we hop on the same crazy train as the feminists.

Women make 80%+ of all purchasing decisions. They, in aggregate, also have control over 60%+ of all assets.

Advertisers and marketers are simply trying to cater to the largest possible audience, which is one that wants to see eye candy consisting of the top 10%.

Ignore it, it isn't meant for you.

[–]garglemesh42 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I still think that all these TV shows and advertisements that are all "har har, boys are stupid, and fat, and ugly! They'd put their shirts on backwards if us smart, beautiful women weren't around to fix things for them!" can't be good for the self esteem of the boys that are being raised on this junk. Combined with the "boys are just damaged girls" attitude of our schools, I don't how males that have gone through our school system in the past ten years or so could possibly have a healthy amount of self-esteem.

Using their own arguments against them never works. To work, it would require the adversary to have a rational mind that eschews hypocrisy.

Daddy Pig, where are your glasses? Daddy Pig, your stomach is too big... Daddy Pig, is lost... Daddy Pig can't do jack shit. He is what every woman thinks of their married husband...especially the faulty marriages.

To be fair, men have been portrayed as dumb when it comes to video and print for a while. I mean, it's one of the most basic components in the majority of sitcoms and had been since the 70's.

But at least we can be pretty now too!!! Progress.

[–]Horus_Krishna_2 -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it's for the best we need men to get less macho and tough so in the future we have less wars and crime.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The writer seems like a jealous cuck trying to equate being in shape as being dumb... Ive obviously noticed the trend of men(mainly white men now), being portrayed as dumb or beta on tv shows or ads.. so that is true.. but the writer comes off as a jealous cuck when it comes to guys who lift weights.
