How about letting the kids choose what toys they want to play with. The girls may not be playing with the legos simply because they aren't interested in them

[–]Lethn 142 points143 points144 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Like a feminist is going to allow girls to make their own choices in life if it doesn't reflect what they want in society.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points28 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

THIS.

[–]FastFourierTerraform 21 points22 points23 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

i read another article that says she tried that, and the kids made the "wrong choices". Apparently she got some pink Legos to entice the girls and discourage the boys, but the boys didn't care and kept playing with them

[–]captain_craptain 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Doesn't using pink go against her whole theory of trying to gender toys?

[–]FastFourierTerraform 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, it's not like that at all when THEY do it.

[–]6454655445 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is performance art, isn't it?

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points44 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's, like Title IX, feminists limiting what men can do, under the guise of being fairer to women.

[–]baskandpurr[🍰] 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'd bet she's neither banning girls from playing with dolls, or encouraging boys to. She's a feminist so obviously she doesn't think equality involves everybody being treated equally.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She's merely baiting boys feelings who just happen to be children a tenth her age.

"Developmentally appropriate" Good thing they made the text wavy.

Give us money

No mention of her name on the School website. Just Mrs Colby now.

[–]captain_craptain 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe she got kindercanned!?

[–]geniice 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How about letting the kids choose what toys they want to play with.

That isn't very productive. The sooner you get to the point where you can break out the breadboards the better no?

[–]Wargame4life 117 points118 points119 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Cool im all for it, and as part of the same program we should send her to jail on the same premise.

"men don't want to go to jail but there are significantly more men in jail than women hence this woman should be forced to go to jail as an important lesson in equality"

It's the same logic, the same argument, actually its objectively more significant since jail is more "life impacting" than maths skills etc.

lets lock this bitch up ASAP please, its for equality

[–]garglemesh42 76 points77 points78 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Keller stated that boys always ask to play with Legos but she treats them as girls only to try to get girls to use them: “I always tell the boys, ‘You’re going to have a turn’ — and I’m like, ‘Yeah, when hell freezes over’ in my head. I tell them, ‘You’ll have a turn’ because I don’t want them to feel bad.”

What a sexist bigot. People like that shouldn't be allowed to teach. They're the reason why boys and men everywhere are being raised to hate themselves and their entire gender, and to be afraid of other men.

[–]louisiana_whiteboy 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Dude that's fucking horrible to take that shit out on little boys. I mean... They are children, they probably think they are doing something wrong when the teacher treats them like shit, when in reality, she's just bigoted.

it's like if you're a racist, but you keep it to your self, that's OK... I guess, I mean your not demeaning anybody.

But then if you are racist to people out there in the world, that's fucked up. You shouldn't look down on or judge people by the color of their skin.

What would be even worse, and I mean absolutely disgusting and vile is to be racist towards children of a different color. Just because they are too young to understand why or what they did wrong and won't talk back to you because you're an adult. That you could belittle a child like that is horrible.

That's basically what she is doing, taking her bigoted ideals out on children because they are to young to comprehend what is going on.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. Where does her slope end? I am betting she doesn't disallow boys from learning math. I bet she doesn't grade the girls harder to toughen them up. She thinks she's clever and has the impression that she can impose any stupid fucking thing that pops into her head and call it a day's work. What a fucking cunt.

[–]Leinadro 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Its even darker. If you applied her idea to prison not only would more wome. Need to be sent to prison to even things out but fewer men would need to be sent to prison as well.

So to emulate keeping boys from playing with Legos, we would have to keep mem from going to prison.

That literally means letting male criminals go free for gender equality.

(Yes this is hyperbole lest some antimra loon swears that we really want this to happen.)

[–]L0gic1o1 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mark my words, some stupid fuck will say this.

[–]deetar -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That escalated quickly.

[–]Upvote_To_The_Left 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

why is this women trying to fit a square block into a round slot? Why is she forcing girls to play with lego? if girls CHOSE not to, they shouldn't need to be forced to. Girls naturally gravitate to certain toys, just like boys do. It's normal!

[–]Parmazilla -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Why is it not at all possible that pressure and influence from various sources sways their decision making? My secondary school created a boys-only textiles class, and the gender split on the textiles course went from one boy out of 92 girls, to 20.

[–]deadalnix 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It is. Then what ? We need to remove people freedom because their choice may have been influenced by external factors ? That is kind of Orwelian.

[–]Parmazilla 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who's removing anybody's choice in this scenario?

[+][deleted] 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[permanently deleted]

[–]Parmazilla 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

All that is completely missing the point.

You're taking external factors to mean literally anything that ever happens, which has to be a purposeful mischaracterising. I'm talking specifically about factors or influences from society that force children to conform to certain set roles, such as boys not taking art or music classes because they're seen as feminine, or girls not taking engineering, computing etc because they're seen as masculine. Personally, i would have loved to have studied music at some point during my education, but my parents wouldn't allow it, but did for my sister.

[+][deleted] 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[permanently deleted]

[–]Parmazilla 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If anything our society gives incentives for girls to go to fields like engineering.

Now it does, after decades of forbidding them to.

Now that's great and all... but what if they simply don't all want to be engineers?

Source?

Then we blame the sexist society for "forcing" them to play with dolls.

If the only toys they are given are dolls, they will play with dolls.

I took art AND music AND singing classes in high school AND middle school. And if either of my parents tried to say "no" I'd tell them they had zero control over the classes I take and what I wanna do. And in all of those music AND art AND singing classes I took, 0 people told me I wasn't "being manly." So really.... you not taking art classes in high school wasn't your parents fault, it was your own fucking fault.

Good for you. I happen to like being able to go outside, play sports, play video games, get pocket money and see friends. So i did what they said. But there it is, the typical MR "this was what it was like for me, so anybody that has a different experience must be a massive pussy" bollocks.

Time to stop deflecting blame, that's little kid stuff, YOU chose not to take music classes.

Nope.

enroll in your OWN lessons now that you are an independent adult!!

I'm grade 8 piano, grade 6 violin, and play synths for a band. If i had been allowed to do so before i left home, i would have. Fuck off with that.

Or are your parents still helicoptering your schedule?

No, because i haven't talked to them in at least two years.

Or is it societies fault for calling you a bitch for knowing an instrument?

Nope, i didn't say that.

C'mon dude the buck stops with you.

Not in this case, no.

Keep trying.

The principals email address is easily available at the Bainbridge Island Schools website, and his name is in the article. I just sent a quick email. Maybe a few more would let him know he's famous now.

[–]snarkymcthrowaway 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

So is her's. Just sent a non-threatening, non-cursing nastygram.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

non-threatening, non-cursing

She now has PTSD you shitlord ;)

[–]WolfShaman 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She's probably had it for some time, because a man spoke to her once when she was a child. Now any time a male says anything to her it's a trigger.

[–]snarkymcthrowaway 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Naturally!

[–]snarkymcthrowaway 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

For the record: "The way you treat boys in your classroom is completely shameful. If anyone in administration has half a brain, you'll be fired soon."

Sent one to the principal too: "Karen's treatment of boys in her classroom is totally unacceptable, and your school is receiving national, negative coverage as a result of her behavior."

[–]houseaddict 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm in the UK here, so international. :-)

[–]SmokesInTheNight 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think I just tried sending her an email, but I got a failed delivery email stating the account does not exist - is anyone else seeing this? I hope this means they fired her and deactivated her account.

[–]snarkymcthrowaway 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We can hope. I'm betting they just shut the mailbox down after the ensuing flood.

[–]laxdstorn 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I sent an email directly to her. Just expressing my discontent with her practices and advising that she leave teaching if this is how she thinks it should be done.

[–]Onthegokindadude 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I copied and emailed this to them. With some formatting of course.

I sent an email to the principal and the superintendent. Go above his head if he's not doing anything about it. Hopefully the superintendent isn't a misandrist too, though.

[–]waggytalk 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's a good idea combined with a bad one.

good idea is playing with lego's. Even at 40 i still enjoy it.

bad idea. making it "girls only".

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She isn't just making it girls only. She's making it girls only and telling boys they'll get a turn.

It's modern feminism in a nutshell: special treatment for women under the guise of equality.

[–]shifty_pete 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I have no problem with women having women-only clubs and activities, but they can't complain when men have men-only clubs and activities. It's all or nothing, you can't pick and choose.

[–]deadalnix 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women shit on men in women only space. Men usually don't. Women think men will do the same thing as they do and freak out. Men assume women will do the same thing as they do and do not freak out.

[–]WolfShaman 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Tell that to colleges that say everywhere is a safe space for males, but women need specific areas that are woman-only.

I love how women-only gyms/spaces/clubs are perfectly fine. Have a male-only gym/space/club? Good luck with that.

[–]DillipFayKick 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She's teaching them a 'lesson'. The 'lesson': it's okay for to discriminate against boys because of our tinfoil hat patriarchy theory.

[–]Alkomb[🍰] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep.

[–]SlashSero 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

First male spaces are invaded and then males are pushed out and restricted from those spaces. This seems to be the general trend everywhere in all age brackets. If males like something but females don't then that is a problem that needs an authoritarian solution. Just keep wondering why more and more males become anti-social and disenfranchised from society.

[–]Vitorfg 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is very strong in America, and it makes me wonder if that's the reason why so many boys up there grow up so completely fucked up that they think shooting up a school is a good idea. I don't think anything good can come from repressing and shunning down upon boys most strong and most basic instincts

[–]CornyHoosier 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Keller stated that boys always ask to play with Legos but she treats them as girls only to try to get girls to use them: “I always tell the boys, ‘You’re going to have a turn’ — and I’m like, ‘Yeah, when hell freezes over’ in my head. I tell them, ‘You’ll have a turn’ because I don’t want them to feel bad.”

This is disgusting. You want to know what good teaching is? Let me tell you a story form my past:

I had a 5th grade teacher named Mrs. Guile. She was a great woman and cared about the education and interests of all the children in her class.

I had always taken to technology pretty well, so when our school got a computer I was always so excited to use it. Being the awesome teacher that she was, Mrs. Guile saw I loved using the computer and wanted other students to use it. Looking back I could see that it was almost always the boys that wanted to use the computer. So what did she do to even things out? She paired me up with one of the girls in class and had me show her everything I had learned on the computer.

She didn't exclude me from using the computer to give the girls a leg up. She was a smart teacher so was able to harness my enthusiasm for technology to progress the intelligence of the others.

Destroying the imagination and enthusiasm of children because of their gender is so abhorrent that I feel this woman needs to lose her teaching license. This is a despicable teaching method.

What a stupid pile of shit excuse for a human being. Well, I guess there's nothing she can do about boys playing with Legos when they're not at school.

[–]SmokesInTheNight 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I find it humorous/disturbing how the feminists that always push and campaign and try to force women to pursue STEM... are outside of STEM. The level of hypocrisy and duplicity is astounding. Here you are Karen Keller, a KINDERGARTEN TEACHER - an occupation PREDOMINANTELY female, an occupation recognized across society as a "traditionally female" occupation, and you are trying to force OTHER girls to pursue STEM. Isn't it obvious how ungenuine you are? If you truly believed in your cause, that there need to be more women in STEM, why don't YOU go into STEM? Why don't YOU quit your job, go back to school to become an architect. Instead you sit in your cushy job as a kindergarten teacher bullying 5 and 6 year old boys because you know you're too weak to compete with adult men. These feminists are only pioneers in talk, never in action, they're always trying to force and talk other females into putting in the hard work and discipline, the actual action, to break barriers - it's never themselves.

I wonder if this women sleeps better at night knowing she is saving the world by not letting her boys play with legos.

meanwhile in Syria women are having acid thrown in their face.

Last I heard it is more likely men to be experiencing this, but yeah, there are bigger fish to fry if that is your point.

Legos huh? The company infamous for advertising that their products aren't for a specific gender, and that boys may want to play with the pink stuff, and girls may want to play with the blue stuff?

Huh.

[–]theHangedGod 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Separate but equal

[–]DavidByron2 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's like the famous blue eyes / brown eyes experiment except instead of lasting just a couple of days it's forever and instead of trying to show kids not to be prejudiced it's training them in hatred.

[–]L0gic1o1 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Girls are forced to do something they don't like for equality, boys are vilified for wanting to play with them.
Welcome to the new frontier of feminism.

[–]TheBrownWelsh 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I remember when I was a daycare teacher (the only male one there), there was a young boy who was very effeminate. The teachers advised me to not let him play with the girls toys because it wasn't "right". I could never get them to admit that they thought it was going to "turn him gay", but they consistently tried to veer him away from girls toys yet let the girls play with whatever they wanted. Hell, they even let some of the other boys play with girls toys, but they were usually just using them as props and not actually playing with them.

It really pissed me off, trying to forcibly direct this child in the direction they felt was the "right" one. I did my best with him, playing with the toys with him when I thought I could get away with it. My best success was after they'd stopped him from wearing the pink tutu he loved; he wanted to put on a magic show and needed a "beautiful assistant" in true cliche fashion, but none of the other kids wanted to help him - so I threw on the tutu and became his assistant. They kind of stopped bothering me about it after that.

[–]nick012000 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They kind of stopped bothering me about it after that.

Probably because they assumed you were gay. :P

I think its great to have a girls only club for legos. But her mentality and approach are just ridiculous.

[–]TheBauhausCure 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LEGO is something my husband and I enjoy together. To deprive the joy and mental exercise from half of the class seems almost cruel.

[–]Vitorfg 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is too much. Are teachers allowed to engage in forcefull social engineering likes this?

[–]rodrigogirao 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Contact the Lego Group, they won't like seeing their toys being used as part of a hate campaign.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I think at most, you could have everyone try playing with a certain thing once. At the start of the year, play with LEGO, then at the end of the week, let the kids play with what they want. Then the next week if you have more things left to introduce, start the process again. And again let kids choose what to do at the end of the week. Going until you're done.

That way, kids get exposed to new things. But you still allow them to have the fun they want. I'd rather just let kids experiment on their own however. I never liked needing to try new things just for the sake of trying new things. I'll try new things I'm actually interested in, and that's about it. Always have been that way. I think most kids would act up if they were bored with something. Boys in particular since they have more energy.

edit; "Karen S" in the comments... is that the Kevin Strong?

and I’m like, ‘Yeah, when hell freezes over’ in my head.

I imagine that's exactly what's going on when feminists say they're working on men's issues.

What a terrible terrible person. Scary that she has access to children all day every day. I bet she treats them very well... If that was my kid in her class, I'd be pulling them out of that school immediately.

Someone needs to complain about this woman and get her out of an early years setting!

From another article about the same story: http://fellowshipoftheminds.com/2015/11/17/teacher-restricts-lego-play-to-her-girl-students-in-the-pursuit-of-gender-equity/ "Apparently Keller did some research and determined on her own that something had to give as she believed her girl students were indeed missing out. Keller found in her research that Lego play has been widely attributed to accelerating development and helping children fine-tune spatial and math skills, two of the largest areas of cognitive disparity between men and women. Further, female STEM role models are few and far between, and part of the reason for their underrepresentation, Keller believes, are the gender stereotypes women are socialized into from an early age."

Well, good, then once she's tried this for a month, she's going to let us know what the results are, right? HAha Don't hold your breath. We all know what the results are going to be, because this crap has all been tried before over and over for decades and ironically the results have proven that gender is NOT a gender construct. It goes all the way down to the molecular and physiological levels and our DNA.

Liberals are just extremely stupid and uneducated and never learn and act like this is the 1960s. Feminism is DEAD. It's over. Decades ago. Get a LIFE, Loser. Feminism PROVED that gender is not a gender construct, men and women are nothing alike and women can't be men. Just accept the fact that girls and women are simply not as intelligent or energetic or as imaginative and move on. The world got along just fine before Feminism, in fact it did 1 million times better without Feminism.

Was right there with you until that... just don't agree mate.

Why? Facing reality and the truth is always 1 million times better than lying to yourself. Show me the evidence of women's intelligence. The evidence of men's intelligence is all around, everything invented and built by men. To even entertain that women have contributed even 1/1,000,000 of what men contribute to the world is an insult and spit in the face to men. What is even the point of trying to convince people of something that is the opposite of what we can see with our own two eyes everyday? It's a waste of time, pointless and stupid.

[–]houseaddict 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You're the one making the claim, why don't you provide some evidence.

[–]Ovendice 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The evidence is all around you. 100 million inventions and everything built around you where you're sitting and anywhere you go. What more evidence do you need than.. everything? Ha

if the boys were creating a threatening environment for the girls when they wanted to play with lego's then i could understand. but if the girls wee simply not interested then this is bullshit.

no. im just saying that these things are possible. a girl couldve gotten "beat up" as beat up as you can in kindergarten, and this couldve been the response. and it would be fine if girls were afraid to try and play with the legos. but if it is self segregation by the students over who wants to play with the lego's and that happens to segregate by sex then thats life and we shouldnt choose for these kids. and this lady needs to go.

[–]192873982 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That doesn't make is reasonable to tell the boys they'll get to play with the lego, but never let them. That would only excuse that the teacher ensures somehow that everyone gets his turn.

Then you punish the action of the individual boy, as you should when any child under your care is acting out of line.

You don't ban all of the same gender from a particular activity. Even in your hypothetical, it's not the appropriate response.

If a girl shoved a boy over and he hit his head on a table, because he wanted to play dress up. Do you ban all girls from playing dress up? Nope.

This right here is feminism. Even when people mean well, the "women are wonderful" effect makes them default to supporting the feminist and creating explanations on behalf of them to explain the behavior. Even if a boy was doing that, the rest shouldn't blanket be punished. Gotta support the feminist no matter how many boys get paved over along the way.

Thankfully, she has an explanation provided:

The Bainbridge Island Review reports that Karen Keller, a kindergarten teacher at Blakely Elementary, is tackling the issue of gender equity by not allowing the boys in her class to play with Legos.

"I always tell the boys, ‘You're going to have a turn,'" Keller told the Review. "And I'm like, ‘Yeah, when hell freezes over' in my head."
