I'm 54 married 31 years. Two kids 27 and 29.

Our marriage is over. Both of us are to blame and have made mistakes. I won't say I don't have blame. We've not really communicated in years and I've been unhappy for some time. We tried counseling years ago (twice) and it worked for a while and then we were back to normal. It's pretty much the typical married entirely too young (22 and 23), had kids too quickly, and just grew apart as time went on. We argued about money for years, her spending was (and still is) a problem. She spends her paycheck as soon as she gets it and at this age in my life I'm simply tired of living like that. We argued over the kids and discipline until they left home. They've turned out to be good and decent kids for which I'm thankful.

But when we are alone now together over the weekends, I realize that I can't stand this in my old age. I travelled for nearly two months this summer (by myself seeing the one daughter and other family) and absolutely loved it. I hated it when I pulled up to the house.

I've talked to a lawyer about the probable financial outcome of a divorce. The lawyer's discussion of a worst case scenario was not as bad as what I had thought--half my pension (which I'm currently taking as I'm retired), half home equity, some long-term alimony based on my self-employment income. Separate property I have would remain separate. I could live with the financial aftermath.

But I just can't bite the bullet and either move out, file, have "the talk," or anything. It's like I cannot get off the fence. Anyone have advice for just doing it? Or is there some prep I've not done? Maybe I've listened to her crap for so long (she's great at either gaslighting or outright lying about something) that I'm not seeing a way out of it.
