How does Alimony compare between CA, TX and WA?

Texas doesn't really do Spousal Support except in extreme cases mostly having to do with abuse or disability.

Permanent Alimony in CA is rare - you have to have a very long term marriage, no ability to return to work and support yourself and the money has to be there to actually support that level of 'spousal support.'

My marriage was 16+ years, ex got a little over 8 years of spousal support. We negotiated that at 8 years it goes to ZERO but doesn't terminate. She has to show a reason for it not to be ZERO and then it terminates at 10 years.

Even with that at retirement I believe spousal support can be terminated.

I got divorced in AZ for an 11 year marriage to a chronically unemployable pill popper. She had 10 different doctors all writing her scrips for a combination of narcotics, mood stabilizers, muscle relaxers and sleeping pills. She always had valid prescriptions and claimed she was "too sick to work." We also had 2 kids.

I make a decent salary, and I was going to offer 1/4 of my take home pay in alimony for a few years if she would have settled out of court. But she was adamant she wanted half of my take home pay in alimony. Plus she wanted to me to have visitation only of the kids, to give her maximum CS $'s.

We went to trial, and the judge gave her ZERO alimony! And I got my 50/50 custody. It took her 2 days to stop screaming.

Look up realworlddivorce.com and see the different stories for each. The outcome of each heavily depends on length of marriage and income of both spouse. Don't marry poor women!

WA (going through this now) has two components. Length/duration and amount.

Duration depends on the length of the marriage. < 5 years, 5-25 years, 25yrs+. The women is eligible (but not guaranteed) life long after 25yrs+. For mid length marriages it's 1 year of support for every 3-4 years of marriage. For < 5 can often be zero or the 1 year for every 3-4.

Amount is all over the board. This is really just up to the judge. No one knows how they come up with this amount. BUT two general rules. 1) Max is 50% of gross or 40% of net. 2) They factor in need, ability to pay and her ability to work.

In my case, married 12 years. She's a stay at home house wife, no kids. So has not working in ~13-14 years. Has a college degree. BUT she is now claiming is not capable of working due to physical injuries, that I abandoned her, asking for $13k/mo for temporary support pending final settlement (and $10k in legal fees [after 2 months]). From what I hear, but haven't really looked into it, TX is the best place to get a divorce :)

I was married 8 years in Ca paid 4 years alimony. I thought it was excessive. Paid child support for 11 years and my son lived with me for 9 of those years.
