Depends on the state, but yes. Both time division and financial disparity are often factors into determining the amount of CS.

As are contributions towards medical and daycare.

Stop falling on your sword and paying for everything. Your wife is an adult and fully capable of taking car of herself and your child. The child support you pay is part of how she achieves that.

Start at the middle -- both of you split everything 50/50. If you start by paying for everything, you have zero negotiating room.

It depends on where you live, but if you make that much more than her, you will likely have to pay her. It's not fair, but it is what it is. The court system doesn't care about fair and have a bias against men in general. Make sure you have her income imputed to be her working full time. That will help you somewhat.

Just hope she doesn't do like my ex did and con (or maybe exchange favors to) a doctor into saying she was disabled and unable to work. Between child support, their health insurance, and other expenses, I was spending over 45% of my salary on my kids at one point, and I had 50/50 time. I was working my tail off to afford a roof over my head while she sat on her tail and collected a check. Wish I had better news for you. It sux. The only good note is that it does end someday. I'm now done and no longer have to give her a penny. It's a great feeling when you get there. :-)

I pay for my kids based on a state formula. In general, the child support the amount seems legit. All medical is typical for the dad but you could get split some expenses on the child care costs. You will want to get the tax write off and 51% custody or she could be making medical decisions that will cost you a LOT. If you can document some of the losses from the prior years then you might be able to keep some extra assets when it comes to the 50/50 split of property, but that's time and money to a lawyer. Also track what you spend on her expenses from the time you file to be able to keep more of your stuff.

It's normal. Child support is intended to make sure the child's living conditions in both homes is as close to the same as possible. Even if you're 50/50 - if you're making a ton more than your EX then you'll pay Child Support.

If she isn't working full time though, her income should be based on her 16/hr at full time.

Ask your lawyer if they are using a state child support calculator. Also, make sure you are getting credit in the calculation for the medical insurance (which will only be the difference between the cost of a single plan vs. plan to add your child) as well as daycare. Make your wife pay for all medical co-pays, etc...that is pretty standard.

I'm sorry man. I'm even more to say that "this is how things are", and they can be worse. Imagine having to pay $475 per week instead of per month. I'm sorry.

Best advice I can give has already been said... she's going to get child support regardless unless she doesn't have custody of the child. Best thing you can do is get her to pay "her half" of daycare and medical out of "your contribution" to "50/50 child support".

P.S. also fight to put in some more restrictive rules about what medical care you pay for and whether she gets to make unilateral decisions or you must come to an agreement together.

The way my state does it, they add up all the income and multiply by the percentage of time each parent has the kids, and redistribute to make the income match the time. So if you make $75k and your ex makes $32k, that's $107k total. With 50/50, you each get 50% of that total income, so you pay your ex enough so she has the equivalent take-home of someone earning $53k.

Look up the Child Support Calculator for your state. In most states, it's a very simple calculation, and most judges don't deviate much from what is recommended.

Your attorney already likely did this and $475/m is what the output was.

And yup, it's because you make over 2x more than she does.

Hell no. If yall have the child an equal amount of time then you shouldn't offer her shit in child support.

Alimony maybe but not child support.

It's my understanding that most states have a child support calculator where everything is keyed in and spits out a number. If only alimony were that straight forward 🙄

But it does make sense that you would pay child support since there is so much disparity between your incomes. Something to keep in mind is that health insurance premiums for your child should be deducted from the child support due.
