my divorce cost me:

$50,000 - attorney fees

$58,000 - 401k payout

$275,000 - house equity

$20,000 - the mortgage and utilities i paid before the first support order.

$12,000 - the car i gave her

$9,000 - her credit cards i paid off

and $2,200 a month for child support and alimony.

it took me almost 3 years to get her and the boyfriend out of the house so i could sell it. she works under the table and hits me for every last dime.

but i’m so glad to be rid of her. i get to play golf twice a week now without anyone giving me shit!

Here is what happened to me:

Got falsely accused of historical rape by my ex-wife during custody/divorce proceedings
Took me 2 years to get the charge thrown out and $200k in lawyer fees. That's just criminal court....I have yet to start family

mentally and financially you’ll be much better off then if you got divorced down the road.

Was in the exact same position pretty much. In the end I found a way to pay it all off but she will forever keep with her what she did.

It sucks man. Focusing on the kids and working on myself got me through it. FWIW it really does get better. Just takes time. I've been divorced for a few years and still occasionally get angry about alimony, but it's nothing like the raw emotions during and following the divorce.

that first year is brutal, especially when you look at the lawyers' line items in their billing statements. 25 bucks to send an email. i'm in the wrong line of work! but really, you find a way to make it work. in some of our cases we even end up in BETTER shape because it forces the exes to control their own spending. it is astonishing how much more she cost me before our finances were split!
