I heard somewhere before that sometimes victims, who were in situations where they were totally helpless, try to take on some of the responsibility in order to not feel utterly powerless. I feel like Choice Feminism is the macro-level version of that.

Have you, dear readers of FDS, noticed how there always seems to be a link between low quality relationships, sex + pornography (including softcore social media posts), and information consumption mediated by technology? That's because it's intentionally set up by the society we live in, which is male-dominated hyper capitalism. People think that critiques of capitalism = a push for communist gulags or not having the choice to order food at 3am on ubereats or the lack of consumer choice in buying competitively priced toilet paper holders, and this isn't to criticize the """free market"""", tho it deserves to be criticized, but highlight the insidious effects of why existing in this hyper-capitalist reality makes you feel dead on the inside.

Economically, we've reached a point where literally everything that can be treated as a commodity will eventually become one to be marketed for consumption, and this includes things that have no business being treated that way like love and sex. From this lens, love and sex are reduced to a literal marketplace: every porno or type of fetish, every person you swipe, every ig profile you scroll through exists as a uniquely branded object meant for you to consume. The effect of treating everything as a material good as that exists for your consumption gives rise to increasing narcissism and objectification, because these are no longer people who have real hearts and desires, they're things you consume because it feels sooo good for you! And besides it's way easier to treat people like objects because living things have too many feelings and needs!!!!

Love is a powerful force which is what makes it so effective to systemize and profit off the human desire for love and connection — it's so pervasive that we are psychologically engrained to brand our online persona to yield the most social capital (cool girl factor), and permeates every aspect of reality from the capitalization of the digital self (pressure to sexualize yourself or create a personal brand), to the way you think (choice feminism is cool and woke) to how you form relationships (hook-ups). It is extremely profitable to the market and benefits status quo (patriarchy) to commodify love and sex, and this makes sense if you look at the increasing intensity of how women are objectified, that we're just sexual goods up for grabs and need to do our part to perform on the market by staying hot and beautiful. And it's getting more sexualized and devoid of love because that's too much effort for too little reward when you can do way less and get way more. If you choose to opt out of this love-sex industrial complex for the sake of your sanity because you crave a real human connection, you end up losing because fewer people are choosing to take this route making it harder to genuinely connect; if you choose to participate in it, you also lose because you are more likely to encounter porn-sick lazies and people who just want to use you.

This is why it's so exhausting to date, we have all the appearance of choice who to be with but no actual say in how others should be with us because it's beyond individual control. The good thing is that more women are becoming more critical and seeing through this entire facade and responding accordingly, which is all we can hope for.

Choices require options.

The more options women have to make a living with dignity, the fewer women you will see making choices like porn.

I liken it to the way that an increase in the cost of university education and expensive healthcare leads to the increase in military enrolment for men.

It’s like “Hey! Here’s your chance to earn back what we have stolen from you.”

With porn though, there’s no scholarship, you are going to resort to drugs to cope, and it ruins your chances in other careers. There is no porn star’s discount at the Costo. The same people who benefit from your labour are most likely to kill you.

I’m in a very weird headspace since the Atlanta shootings of those poor women.

Choice feminism started because a lot of women were unable to separate criticism of certain norms and aspects of culture that are harmful to women from things they felt personally invested in, especially things like beauty, pandering to the male gaze, and porn (including BDSM). Capitalism was a huge driving too as no one wants to be told they should be ashamed of buying things.

Like I get it, it can be exhausting to live in the patriarchy and critically examine things you enjoy. It’s like being an anti-capitalist yet still recognizing that you need a job to pay rent. But we need to be able to live in that dissonance and see what things might be “problematic” but aren’t really that harmful, like liking to wear a bit of lippy, and things that actively ruin the lives of women, like porn and the culture surrounding it.

If it does not challenge the patriarchy, it is not feminist. Also, money =/= empowerment, just because you can make money from sex doesn’t mean it will be good for you and especially for women as a class.

choice feminism is another set of words for "let's make them think it's their choice" haha.

and how many times do we need to say it? just because a woman says it is "empowering" for her, porn is NOT empowering to women! that's just something porn addicts who want to sleep better at night tell themselves. and what is worse, a large percentage of them are there just for the idea that IT MIGHT NOT BE "ethical".

the rise in popularity of rape porn, incest rape porn and other forms of coercion displayed in porn speak for this trend. they are there in search of the taboo and in search of the abominable and the dehumanizing.

And ding ding! Incest is on a rising trend. HOW come? Also, both incest with child abuse cases increased during the pandemic... And they lie to us and say incest porn has nothing to do with it.
