I think she is HV, because she’s rich and successful.

🤔 ... Being rich means literally nothing in terms of HV/LV.

If someone is financially stable and wise with their money, great. But don't assume they're a HV person for this reason alone.

In my opinion, she’s somewhere in the middle (relationship-wise). She and her husband got married after 5 years of dating, and she talks about pressuring him to propose in her standup. So, she was on her way to forever-girlfriend territory, but she didn’t buy property or have kids before marriage like a lot of forever girlfriends. She has a joke about packing her husband’s lunch every day so he would be dependent on her, but we all know LVM would just take it for granted. She talked about dating a lot of losers and sleeping with a homeless guy, so while her standards for marriage material were high, her standards for dating and casual sex were on the floor. She signed a prenup (“pressured by his family”), and then found out he was $70k in debt only when they were trying to buy a house AFTER they got married (according to her standup). Oh, and she paid off that debt with her TV writing earnings SMH. If her husband had dumped her (she signed a prenup!), her savings would have been gone. She also comes across as pornsick, since she talked about watching porn at a young age and breaking up with her last boyfriend before her husband because he wouldn’t do anal.

On the other hand, she’s definitely aware of a lot of the double standards between men and women and calls them out in her standup. This is where she aligns with FDS, not so much her personal life and her marriage. I don’t know, it’s a pretty mixed bag to me. I just find it hysterical that she was angling to be a SAHM (and had falsely assumed, like most people, that it would be a life of leisure) and talked a lot about how she didn’t want to work anymore, but then accidentally got famous and became the breadwinner and then provided her husband with the dream life SHE had wanted. But hey, her husband went to Harvard Business School 😂.

Nope nope nope. The only thing being rich and successful has to do with HV is if they got money and success through hard work and other good character-related qualities. I cannot stress enough, money itself gives only vague hints about high value BEHAVIOR. LACK OF MONEY can (but not always) point to a man having character issues, such as constantly getting fired from jobs, not being able to stick to things, being lazy, etc.

Ali Wong has a lot of correct observations about double standards, but she is heavily pornsick and very "cool girl" in her material. I liked her previous two specials but this one was very grating to me. I don't think her marriage is going to last, because of how much she talks about her husband getting to relax and enjoy life (and watch porn while she's gone on the internet she pays for) while she works her ass off. She is really trying to hold it together and joke about needing to do rather gross things sexually to avoid boredom together. I think she resents him and it's growing. It's sad and I hope she either has a better life than it seems behind the scenes or figures out a way to be happier than she seemed in this special.

Somewhat— if we label her based on the way we label men, she would be considered LV since she has one huge red flag. I think this has been discussed briefly in another thread, but it echos a lot of FDS principles. Like a lot of other ladies have said, the only glaring flag is that she sounds pretty pornsick based on the special 😕

Having a successful career doesn’t make someone high value. Espousing and living healthy standards for herself and in her relationships is what would make her high value. If a man was saying much of what she does, we’d say to block & delete.

Does she have some high value traits? Sure. Would she pass the test for relationship-worthiness if she were a man? No.

I don’t know how seriously to take her statements as she seems to purposefully exaggerate her sentiments (about being a kept woman, for instance). So even porn & sex references might feel liberating for her Asian audience where a lot of sexuality is taboo. Remember she’s an entertainer- so a lot of what she does is stretch reality to make us laugh- and that clearly takes priority over a realistic narration of her relationship. She isn’t out there cheating or engaging in casual sex, as much as she will talk about it. The times she did do that she mostly regrets- and it’s probably good for girls to be exposed to that.

Like many comedians- she frees us to think how we think and feel how we feel and not feel shame.

I really like the chapter of her book written by her husband. It was very touching and supportive.

I don’t assign HV based on past pick-me behavior, but based on her insufficient critique of porn now- yeah, no girl.

She’s on her way tho! As we all are.

I give her a pass because the comedy audience is super misogynistic and at this point she wants to make all the money- so if she has to talk about bjs for 10 mins so she can go onto emasculating a bunch of men…. Is that her or is that the comedy audience?

I think she’s HV based on how hard to get to where she is in her career. Iirc she strongly hints in her book that her routine is maybe a droplet of truth and the rest is all for show. I also think she’s done a great job making the public think her stage persona is her real persona, thereby leaving her private life private.

It's a HV trait to not be so judgemental.

HV/LV is not black & white but works in a continuum. I see her as a human, someone who recognized her past & current flaws, jokes about it, and do better next time. We are not perfect and I don't expect my partner to be either.

As long as we both recognized our shortcomings and willing to truly work towards the relationship, I'm okay with that.
