I remember teaching a class of young Saudi men who were doing their study abroad year. The topic that week was women’s rights. The topic of driving came up and they said we treat our women like queens and driving is too dangerous for them. This was before Saudi women were allowed to drive.

I have a soft spot for Liz because she kind of reminds me of my maternal grandmother. Grandma was a similarly well dressed, proper, and mannerly little old lady (truly little, like 5 feet tall and a 100 pounds soaking wet) but woe any man attempting to deny her what she wanted. Par exemple: she used to have annual private lunch with the mayor of our fairly large city. I know no one else outside politics who ever did this. Idk how she even did it, I think she just met him once and decided she needed to be personally kept appraised of political happenings from the man himself. Her give-no-fucks tenacity and drive all wrapped up in a purple Pendleton tweed suit are all the reasons I'm stoked to get old.
