What a queen, this is amazing. This is what we want, strong women who stand up to deeply rooted misogynistic traditions, not these wimps who want to be one of the guys and sell out other women. She put her neck out and broke out child marriages despite strong opposition (especially from the parents that didn't want to forfeit the dowries they received for their girls).

The so-called 'initiation' of girls in remote areas of Malawi is horrific. Each area has a man known as 'the jackal' who is a sort of sex worker/shaman. He's employed to come to the village and rape the girls after the onset of menses. As well as being sexually traumatised, the girls are often infected with HIV. Widows are also raped following their husband's funeral. It's illegal but the government struggles to extend the rule of law to rural areas, so the support of local chiefs is really important.
