Thank you for posting this!! Can you give any guidance on how to start learning these things from a complete beginner? Should I learn in person somewhere, watch youtube videos or are there classes? I'm nervous that somehow I will get hurt and a car will fall on me while changing the oil.

YES YES YES!! It always makes me sad when I hear or see women/girls saying they can’t do something. YES YOU CAN! Honestly it gives me a sense of pride whenever I do/repair something myself. And please for the love that is holy don’t EVER let a man or other insecure pick-me’s bring you down by telling you ‘that’s a mans job! Girls don’t do those types of things. You won’t be able to do that yourself, or no you can’t.’ Because the fact of the matter is it’s MEN who enforced these notions upon everyone. I swear most men today don’t know jack shit about cars or home repairs etc. I posted this the other day, but I took up woodworking this year as a hobby I’ve always wanted to try and have build 4-5 projects this year alone, therefore when anyone asks me what I can bring to the table—I simply tell them I can build the damn table (I’ll even cut the wood myself), cook a three course meal, plus dessert; what can you bring to the table Dylan? Oh dollar store napkins and a piss poor attitude that’s right. Ladies you can do ANYTHING if ones mind is set to purpose. I’m a petite 5’2 grown ass woman and I don’t depend on anyone but myself. My great grandmother who’s 94 tells me all. The. Time. About the amount of opportunities and avenues women have these days that she never got to experience or even attempt to try! Doing activities that are gendered as ‘male’ things only adds to the cultural brainwashing of women and what they can and cannot accomplish. I know by being self-sufficient a person will have to significantly add to my life, because I can reciprocate everything I ask for. I believe in ALL of you! Xx

I'm not an american an over here almost everybody drives a stick ( i do too). The obsession some american guys have over how driving a stick is so manly and superior has always been super weird to me.

Good call. I sort of see it as like, basic life things. Like, if I'm out in the middle of nowhere, I'd rather just change my own tire than be stranded for who knows how long.

I work for a major auto parts retailer, and the amount of women who come in who don't know how to do basic things makes me sad.

Changing batteries, fuses, wiper blades, and bulbs is so easy! The first time you do it, you will agree.

Yes! You can find YouTube how to videos on changing a tire, wiper blades, fluids, lights and jump starting a car

If you have kids teach them these skills as well. Especially your daughters so that they never have to rely on a strange man helping them if they are stuck on their own with a car issue.

Absolutely, the same is true for Computers and anything to do with IT. Learn how to upgrade your old laptop, build your own computer (it't so much more cheaper), make your own Hackintosh (watch Morgonaut on YouTube), try out some alternative Linux OS, maybe even try out some coding, just TRY it, you might actually be surprised about yourself and what you can do. There are so many great tutorials out there.

My Dad (HVM for sure) made sure he taught both my sister and I all this stuff when we started driving. I’m forever thankful for that life lesson (and many more).

I had overprotective parents who wouldn't let me learn to drive as a teenager and it has been one of the worst disadvantages I've ever had. They assumed I'd learn in my twenties, but it's expensive as hell here and I graduated into the 2008 financial crisis, so just did not have the money, nor anyone to help me practice between lessons. I tried to learn at 32 and got pretty far but then ended up moving country before I could take the test. I'm now 35 and still can't drive and it's REALLY hard to do it now because of Covid. I finally have the money and the time and now there's a goddamn pandemic.

Anyone else in the same boat? I want to learn because I feel like this is hugely stifling my independence but the older I get, the more nervous I get.

There are literally YouTube videos for every single thing. I learned how to change a tire, check my fuses, add oil to my car, and even change the heating element in my dryer all from YouTube tutorials.

I'm a technician, worked for the last 6 years on vehicles but most recently have moved up to automation/robotics and mechanical (machinery). Let me tell you how so many times women came to me directly with questions, asking for help or advice, countless times daily. I was the only female Volvo tech at my workplace and we did self service so we didn't have any advisors. I would get two questions, 1. They would choose to ask me over the male techs just to avoid being judged or taken advantage of and 2. When we were done discussing their issues, I would almost always get a, "btw it's super awesome to see a female tech". :D I even had my regulars that eventually only came to me for help.

In a male dominated industry, all men look to eachother for guidance and respect. I shit on any crusty, greasey toolbag LVM that came to say, "sEe, GirLs caN be tEcHs too!" Fuck that, nobody asked you what you thought, Lars. But everytime if it was a mom leaving her family car for a service or a business owner leaving her leased sports car for some new tires, anytime any of them would give me a smile or a wink and a genuine thank you, I was truly flattered and so happy to help. Queens lift up other queens.

My children's dad used to take care of the cars before our separation. YouTube became my best friend. I've learned to how to charge and change a battery. How to fix a leaking power steering pump and a few other things. I always ask a bunch of questions and always try to find the issue before I go to the garage to look like I know what I'm talking about so far it seems to be working.

i would a million percent go to a female mechanic everyday. i wish there were more of them. if you are a woman who might be interested in it, do it and open your own shop and market it to women! i bet you would make a killing

Man it's dangerous not to know anything about your main mode of transportation! My dad taught me the basics at least, but I don't know as much as him. Like if something is off he knows what it is right away, and that's cuz the first car he bought was a POS, and he didn't have the money to take it to a mechanic all the time, so he had to learn how to fix tons of shit. In the days before YouTube lol.

Saves you a lot of money too to learn to fix as much as you can. When I had a car, my dealership wanted NINTEY bucks to replace the engine and cabin filters. I called my dad and he bought them for me at Walmart for 20 bucks total, then found a YouTube video showing how to change the cabin filter for my make and model. I think the dealership charged like a hundred bucks to change the wipers, which again, 24 bucks at Walmart lol.

No excuse not to learn how to do lots of stuff in the days of YouTube! There's a tutorial for everything on there
