I have seen signs in women's toilets that say "go to the bar and ask for Stephanie" (it is always a different name in each bar) and that means they will help you out on some way (not sure, maybe they get security to help you).

As a bartender, I don’t like this. Not only does this put way too much responsibility the women being harassed, it will force other women into the role of protecting them. In the US, about 60% of bartenders are women and about 40% of bartenders are men. What about the bartender after she walks you to your car? She has to take the walk back alone. After she calls the police? She has to continue to work while a creep boils with anger at her over the police being called on him.

Bar tenders are not paid enough to ask them to do this. We work pretty much solely for tips (Yes, I make $4 an hour but it all goes to taxes. I live off tips). Every minute I am away from the bar drinks are emptying, people are waiting, they’re getting impatient and I am losing the money I came to work to make. We are already way in over our heads with the labor shortage, which hit restaurants particularly hard. I have to limit how much fluid I drink during times that are busy because I don’t have time to make it to the bathroom at times. Yes, I know jobs are supposed to give breaks, but for most bar tenders there is no break…. you can’t tell people to not be thirsty or hungry for 10 minutes. Many times I am the only one working who would technically be allowed behind the bar making drinks.

Management walks me to my car every night, opens the door, and watches me drive off. The day they don’t, I quit. I have cut people off for drinking too much, and then found them waiting and lurking in the parking lot to yell at or confront me after the shift ends. That’s after telling them I’m not comfortable giving them another Bud Light. I can’t imagine how angry they would be if they were told they were making their date uncomfortable.

This is the responsibility of security, bouncers and managers (who are more likely to be male) and paid a reasonable wage.

I mean, I don't like that the responsibility is being placed on the woman. It adds to the mentality that men are just dogs we need protection from. Innately, they are not. They choose to be evil. Men need to start acting like adults and not be forcing themselves on someone who is not giving enthusiastic verbal and non verbal consent.

Me personally, I may not even notice a sign like this if I feel unsafe and I shouldn't be expected to. I can hear the police now: "You walked past the sign on the way to the bathroom, why did you not read it?" lmao. "Were you not able to tell the bartender that you wanted an angel shot with Lime?" So twisted, I can't.

I think the idea behind this is good, but why should it be so secret code? It should just read :

Our venue has ZERO tolerance for sexual harassment of any kind. If you or someone you know is experiencing this unwanted behaviour please do not hesitate to let one of our staff or security know, and we will assist you. And put them up in ALL the toilets. This would be a deterrent for sex pests and the patrons will be encouraged that all the staff are aware of this policy. I never really understood the "come ask for "BeCkY" if you date is a creep, like, just tell the staff you are creeped out my your date or anyone for that matter. Speaking from experience- if you tell staff that someone is making you uncomfortable, the venue then has a legitimate reason to ask a person to leave, they can ask for thier ID also and make a record of it because they are on a licensed premises. Enough with the secret codes already!
