Women's Cancers receive 15 times more funding than men's

At least 10% of fathers are victims of paternity fraud.

One third of all fathers in the USA have lost custody of children, most are expected to pay for this.

My main problem with it is how abstract it is. All this talk of "fighting the patriarchy" or "the patriarchy hurts men too" makes people suspicious of where the detail is.

What is really actionable, when the rubber hits the road? Social movements need specific, defineable goals.

eg. Government funded parental leave for dads has the potential to create social change so that men are seen as equal co-parents.

eg. Military drafts being made gender-neutral. (They're not going away.)

eg. Official ministries for men's health and wellbeing - initiatives that centre men and not just another way to talk about violence against women.

According to my school it does cause we got taught a whole class of why patriarchy and man bad. I study in mexico btw. We didnt even discuss it cause the questions were only allowed for the female students. I wish I was joking.

Well, let's step back and define the term:

"Patriarchy is an institutionalized social system in which men dominate over others, but can also refer to dominance over women specifically; it can also extend to a variety of manifestations in which men have social privileges over others to cause exploitation or oppression, such as through male dominance of moral authority and control of property."

Note first that it distinguishes between male domination, in general, and male domination of women, specifically, meaning that in many cases, the majority of men are subjugated, as well.

Modern, Western society is a little mixed; most politicians and industry leaders are men; most of the richest people are men; men are more likely to wind up in managerial or leadership positions than women.

And this is common, if not quite universal, around the world. To me, that suggests that a certain amount of the explanation is evolutionary (i.e. that social convention simply happened to function better in the recent history of humanity), but that's not the same thing as being permanent or necessary.

On the other hand, property and wealth distribution is pretty even, and moral authority might even be tilted in the other direction. I could even go so far as to suggest that the current state of family law constitutes a social privilege which allows women to exploit men... but then it was a bunch of men who wrote those laws!

So, it's not that patriarchy theory is, "wrong," it's that it doesn't mean what feminists seem to think it means.

You might find something that resembles a patriarchy in the Islamic Gulf States, but even there , the most oppressed humans are the thousands of Indonesian, Indian, Pakistani, and Filipino men who work in economic peonage, often times with their passports confiscated, working for months unpaid in order to pay off the cost of travel, and living in squalid conditions with no legal rights.

A patriarchy is a society in which men have rule and use their power of rule to advantage men. Women have no say in a patriarchy.

In the U.S. women have equal voting rights. In fact there are more female voters. Women can and do run for public office. We don’t have laws advantaging men, quite the opposite: we have many laws advantaging females over males. The same is true of most other countries.

We simply do not live in a patriarchy. When people make arguments based on this fallacy, call them on it.

It probably exists in countries like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, where monotheistic theocracies still oppress everything they touch. In those places, I'd say patriarchy exists, simply because the Abrahamic religions are inherently patriarchal.

In the United States? No way. Unless you speak locally, such as about religious communities, the idea that the entire nation is patriarchal is a laughable mythology.

We had recently a discussion at class, about the past. Apparently, when a woman has the luxury not to be forced in a job, while her father/husband makes all the money, including a huge amount for his daughters marriage to help financially their husbands who will live the same life, is sexist towards women.

Patriarchy never existed.

Feminism ONLY looks at the issues women face. And insist men never suffer. They believe their own biased research and conclude that there must be some sort of conspiracy. Upholding this theory leads to more biased research into issues that only affect women.

During more dangerous feudal times, women demanded chivalry - women needed protection and men had to provide it. In safer, more recent times we see feminists demanding equal outcomes and men have to provide that too.

Our society has always been at the mercy of the most demanding women.

Look at the femicides in Canada, the femicides that have actually been identified by authorities, because the same Canadian authorities can’t be bothered to look into it more, even though Canada is supposed to be an equal country for both sexes and then come rethink what you just asked

Look at how many women are bullied out of STEM by men, for being women, then rethink what you just asked

Look at how many men ‘care’ about abortion (a womans choice and right), and are against it, yet are the same ones to not give an ass about gun laws and who are also the same men to talk about how much they hate women, or how women are bitches and etcetera and then rethink what you just asked

Look at every problem men have, and then look at who caused it. Look at every problem women have, then look at who caused it. It starts to become pretttttyyy obvious 🤷🏻‍♀️

It did more in the past in various cultures and to various degrees, the aftermath of it still has various impacts. Some countries still have it very prominently like Middle East while other place like Canada have less so.

Just a random example I read about today in my country that is an aftermath of patriarchy (there are many many examples but this one I just read so might as well share)

“Discriminatory policies such as the Indian Act prevented Indigenous women from benefiting from some of the same rights as men. For example, Indigenous men were able to pass on their Indian status to their children and grandchildren whereas Indigenous women were not. These discriminatory practices still impact families today”
