It's pretty clear she's not talking about "women's rights", but radical / mainstream feminism - a religion in which "good" (feminism) vanquishes "sin" (gender roles) which is created by the "devil" (patriarchy - an invisible force which can only be perceived by the fact that women choose to behave differently to men).

Of course, extensive study is required (and should be mandatory in schools, universities, and the workplace), so that "sins" are still detected - as with any religion it gets more fanatic (not less) as utopia draws nearer. For example, adherents must learn that the inability to detect "sin" is itself a "sin" - because the devotee has allowed the "devil" to mislead them into thinking that all is well.

Get ready for the articles explaining why a 40 year old woman with two kids doesn't understand feminism - she said she's for equal rights, and said she's not a feminist - she obviously just doesn't know what feminism is, right?

I mean, she's an actress - she might not have a single political bone in her body, and she's just speaking from a position of ignorance!

Well, a quick look at Wikipedia, she starred in "Pretty Things" a French feminist film. That might not make her an expert on feminism, but I think she's not entirely ignorant on the subject.

In 2005, she contributed to Dessins pour le climat ("Drawings for the Climate"), a book of drawings published by Greenpeace to raise funds for the group, and in 2010, she travelled to Congo with Greenpeace to visit tropical rainforests threatened by logging companies, it was shown in the documentary The Congolese Rainforests: Living on Borrowed Time. In 2013, she caged herself near Paris's Louvre museum to demand the freeing of 30 Greenpeace activists jailed in Russia over an Arctic protest. She entered the cage and held a banner proclaiming "I am a climate defender".

In 2009, Cotillard was one of many celebrities to record a cover version of the song Beds are Burning by Midnight Oil, in support of TckTckTck and climate justice. She designed her own doll for UNICEF France campaign "Les Frimousses Font Leur Cinéma", that was sold to help vaccinate thousands of children in Darfur.

She is the patron of Maud Fontenoy Foundation, a non-governmental organization which is dedicated to teaching children about preserving the oceans. She is also the ambassador of Association Wayanga, a French association that supports indigenous peoples for their rights and the preservation of their cultures and the Amazon Forest they inhabit.

In 2011, she publicly supported Chief Raoni in his fight against the Belo Monte Dam in Brazil and signed his petition.

In 2012, she was featured on Kate Winslet’s book "The Golden Hat: Talking Back To Autism", with celebrity self-portrait to raise awareness and support for autism launched by Winslet's Golden Hat Foundation.

In February 2014, she signed "The Tiger Manifesto", a campaign calling for an end to everyday products being manufactured through forest destruction. Launched by Greenpeace, the campaign is encouraging consumers to demand products are forest and tiger-friendly, particularly in Indonesia, where the Sumatran tiger is on brink of extinction.

I think we can safely assume she's actually met a couple of outspoken feminists in her time.

On the production side of things, you'll usually find an 80%/20% female/male split in any given production office.

I wish people would stop arguing about different definitions of feminism. By the common definition used by the average person who doesn't really argue about this much feminism is the belief that gender should play no role in opportunity, and that only you as a person should. If one doesn't agree with this I'm gonna be honest I think that's fucked up. Anything that happens that is different between genders on average can be dealt with individually. I'm guessing Cotillard is referring to people in the more divisive areas like the issue of sexual relations, if people are being portrayed in gender stereotypical roles etc. So when people attack her it kind of annoys me be cause she OBVIOUSLY has a different definition of feminism then they do. That's also what annoys me about many mensrights advocates. A lot of good points on both sides, but then y'all seem to think you must be rivals since a few people on each side go way far antagonizing the entire other side.
