I had a friend post on Facebook about how she got mansplained at a restaurant, where a man was serving her, that he MANSPLAINED a suggestion about her order. Then started writing in all caps that it makes her so mad. Honestly, her was a waiter making a suggestion.
Enjoy the absurdity my friends! Savor the folly! Relish the farce! Delight in the opéra bouffe!
For tomorrow? Tomorrow we die.

But you are right! It’s scary to me too. He was making a suggestion. I saw that and knew we were fucked. You and me both are fucked.

What's surprising to me was how quickly "mansplaining" went from "man condescending to a more intelligent woman" to simply "anything a man says I don't like." It happened in about 1 month.
Me, I guess I'm man-typing this with my sexist man-fingers on my man-puter.

There are so many feminist terms like this they start with a semi reasonable definition and before the ink dries on that become another variant of "fuck men".
Mansplaining, manspreading, toxic masculinity, male privilege, patriarchy, rape culture, really anything to do with men.
[–]The_Best_01 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
None of those terms you listed ever had a semi reasonable definition.

Mansplaining is a manipulative and disingenuous debate tactic- they can shut down or deflect any valid criticism with "mansplaining", and of course if you point out how unreasonable that is, they say it's "mansplaining mansplaining." It can be thrown out whenever a person who happens to be a man disagrees with a person who happens to be a woman.
It's very sexist to, it's suggesting that somehow being a man means your voice is less valid. Any time a

[–]DBOLinouttacontrol 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
It's the opposite of a debate tactic, it's a tactic that prevents debate. It's sexist against women also because it basically tells them that a man has so much agency over you that you couldn't possibly survive a debate with one. It's like when the tall black kid showed up at the basketball court, and you suddenly "don't feel like playing anymore." lol

I agree with you, it's extremely depressing, but unfortunately it's also a defence mechanism. The groups like MTGOW and Red Pill like you say take it to extremes but I'm not someone who's like that and even i'm thinking "Am I really going to have to go to these lengths to protect myself?"
The sad fact is yes, the only way your daughter will likely be able to interact with men properly is quite openly go against feminists. Then she'll pretty much get swarmed with attention lol the problem is you can't always tell just by looking at somebody ( Unless they're on of those crazies that dye their hair and are overweight ) whether or not they're a man hating feminist so men just isolate themselves and keep away.
I'm a games developer, at some point if I ever found a studio in the future I'm going to have to do hiring. Am I going to have to do open door interviews and test women especially to make sure they're not crazy feminists who are going to cry rape the second I close the door?
It's a real concern and I don't think a lot of people realise just how dangerous it is for men right now to even approach a girl. Your daughter is 18, legally she's an adult in most places, I'm 28. You can bet that if she made any kind of complaint against me out of embarassment or revenge the dynamics just on the age difference alone feminists would go absolutely apeshit even if she didn't think it was a huge deal they'd blow it all completely out of proportion.
That's the sort of world men live in right now and I do feel sorry for your daughter in that respect if she's a normal girl but equally men just can't take the chance anymore that a girl her age won't just flip out and try to ruin our lives.

She was talking about how to get Internet access across the border to a foreign country, she was the Secratory of State, he ran an internet provider company. Really, she was basically claiming that she would know how to get internet access across a foreign border, because by definition (using that term very loosely) she would have to be an expert in it and the guy (who was an expert in it) would explain it to her even though she is an expert but he does it anyway because she is a woman.

Point is you can think how you want to think. We don't like feminism because it's dogmatic. We like libertarians because they often think outside of the progressive hive mind.
It's ironic because libertarians are often in an echo chamber too. And I'm saying this as a libertarian.

It brightens my day when I see posts from women like yourself. Women are the ones that need to stand up and tell their fellow sisters to shut the F up. When we men do it we are called misogynists. Any new ideas that come out for a true discussion of how men and women need to come together is met by the Feminist Army of protesters, to be shouted down and silenced at any cost. It kind of reminds me of Adolf Hitlers Brown Shirts in the 1930s Anyone who spoke against Hitler was silenced.
I am not sure if you have watched the documentary called "The Red Pill" I think you can find it on Amazon Fire and some other media.
Two great books that I have read are The Boy Crisis and Men on Strike.
https://www.amazon.com/Boy-Crisis-Boys-Struggling-About-ebook/dp/B01N4UAA8I
American society has become anti-male. Men are sensing the backlash and are consciously and unconsciously going “on strike.” They are dropping out of college, leaving the workforce and avoiding marriage and fatherhood at alarming rates. The trend is so pronounced that a number of books have been written about this “man-child” phenomenon, concluding that men have taken a vacation from responsibility simply because they can. But why should men participate in a system that seems to be increasingly stacked against them?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]alclarkey -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Because most people who call themselves libertarian do not want to destroy all government, or all laws, or all regulation. We recognize that government has a necessary role, but we want it to be a very minimal role.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Just like in the late 1800s when robber barons created vast monopolies that forced people to live in factory towns, when there were no pollution limits, no safety standards, no worker rights, no building codes.

"Mansplaining" is a sexist, man-bashing term that automatically assumes a man's explanation is wrong. It's a term used only by misandrists.
[–]grainagw 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I think mansplaining defined as "a man explaining something to a woman that he wouldn't explain to a man in the same situation" is a legit thing. I've seen men do this. Women do it too, in female-oriented spaces (for example, I've often been talked down to in my make-up classes simply because I was a man), but not as often, mostly because that's not how women engage men.
Men often flirt by exhibiting knowledge and skill, in order to demonstrate value. So, it makes sense that sometimes they'll be caught explaining something to a woman that she already knows. It happens.
What's bullshit is using it as a trump card in an argument to magically win it. That's intellectually dishonest and, frankly, stupid. It's roughly in the same level as playing the Hitler card.
[–]Workchoices 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think mansplaining defined as "a man explaining something to a woman that he wouldn't explain to a man in the same situation" is a legit thing. I've seen men do this.
But we already have a non-gendered word for that, and it skips all the sexist bullshit. Patronising.
"Mansplaining" to me seems to mean " talking down to someone, but its worse because a man does it". It's just throwing needless gendered language around for the purpose of increasing hatefullness and the gender divide.
Like when people say they were "jewed". Well it means you were "ripped off", or scammed but the perpetrator is Jewish. It's just hateful, divisive language.
Yup, me too. It's absolutely a thing, especially when it comes to older men and younger women.
Women do it too, in female-oriented spaces
I mostly experience it the other way around in two types of settings:

Don't worry about it. When the pendulum swung too far the other way, things will change. Men tend to keep all the negative feelings inside until they explode. When they do exploded, there will be blood in the streets. All the revolutions in history happened the same way.

My coworker believes in "mansplaining" and has brought it up as a topic of conversation several times. Apparently "if it happens more to women than men, how can it be untrue?" is a go to argument.
What does one say to such responses and other anecdotal evidence. Because now I'm the one who's accused of being ignorant for believing gender shouldn't be involved in a gender neutral word such as "explain." I should also apparently go talk to other femuales about their experiences as there is "proof" that mansplaining exists.
Apparently "condescending" or "patronizing" aren't good enough words these days.
As a foreigner to whom feminism and the word both mean very little, I usually don't react when accused of something like that. That actually throws off a lot of the people who accuse me of that cos they're used to guys getting apologetic.

So men, who have most of the power, are helpless to feminists and therefore it isn't men to blame, but women that are feminists. Seems like the real effort is to blame women for the legislation you don't like, despite men being the ones that passed it. That's a claim that makes no sense.
[–]The_Best_01 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Do you have reading comprehension? I'm saying both men and women are gynocentric so it doesn't matter which gender it is, these feminist policies come from gynocentrism, which is perpetuated by both genders, so I'm blaming politicians in general.

If you look up the definition, it literally means a man explaining something!
Referring to "the" definition of a controversial word is a very bad sign.
Looking in dictionaries for the definition of a word expressing subtle or complex concepts is often not the best either. An encyclopedia or specialist source is best in those cases.
I've known this word since the start and saw its initial spread. This is a fair summary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mansplaining

Gatekeeping
the activity of controlling, and usually limiting, general access to something.
When someone takes it upon themselves to decide who does or does not have access or rights to a community or identity.
It has been said that feminists are notorious for gatekeeping. Your attempt to control the definition of a word is clearly an example of gatekeeping.
[–]antilopes 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
This thread is full of people attempting to control the defintion of the word by making absolute pronouncements, mostly of a single simple definition. Possibly you are right, they might all be feminists. /s
My feminist credentials are in doubt though because my comment is distinguished by a lack of gatekeeping.
My first sentence strongly rejects the idea of a single meaning.
Just a few others have mentioned an earlier single meaning and a shift to a current single meaning. But I am almost the only person non-gatekeepy enough to allow for two meanings at the same time. I am the only person to allow for more than two.
Although OP's definition is ridiculous, not agreed by anyone else, and I really can't think what process of "looking up the definition" could result in finding just the one she quoted, I did not criticise it nor suggest a better single definition.
Words are ultimately defined by their usage within a given context, even for a prescriptivist like me.
In MRAdom mansplaining consists purely of a woman's unjustified attack on a man either for explaining while male, or for other reasons where his explaining is just the pretext for an attack. A common feature of all MRA definitions I've seen is that no reflection on the man's behavior is indicated. The mansplaining is safely contained within the woman's (mis)perception or hostile intent. The MRA definitions can be seen as reactive anti-definitions, but that does not make them invalid.
The encyclopedia link gives more meanings and explains the original meaning of the term, which is still very much in use between feminists particularly in reference to men explaining women's experience to them.
[–]Standard_Rules_Apply 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Here you begin by erecting the gate posts:
You are attempting to negate OP's definition because it narrows the possibility to one. With only one definition, "the" definition, the word is much harder to manipulate into whatever other meaning your narrative desires.
Here you hinge the gate itself:
Looking in dictionaries for the definition of a word expressing subtle or complex concepts is often not the best either.
You follow your first negation with another as if you are trying a one-two knockout punch.
Crazy as it sounds, you actually present the argument that looking in a dictionary is a bad idea for finding definitions of words.
I can only shake my head in wonderment at you:
An encyclopedia or specialist source is best in those cases.
The specialist source you are referring to is a...
Anyone? Anyone?
Dictionary a book or electronic resource that lists the words of a language (typically in alphabetical order) and gives their meaning, or gives the equivalent words in a different language, often also providing information about pronunciation, origin, and usage.
Dictionary
a book or electronic resource that lists the words of a language (typically in alphabetical order) and gives their meaning, or gives the equivalent words in a different language, often also providing information about pronunciation, origin, and usage.
Imagine that!
And finally, you close the gate and position yourself directly in the way to prevent entry except when you permit.
I've known this word since the start and saw its initial spread.
Your anecdotal experiences are great but cannot be used as empirical evidence.
You want to be the gatekeeper of this word and its meaning to control its usage.
No. Not going to happen.
Here is where I laugh as you stand defiantly in front of your imaginary gate with your arms folded across your chest:
This is a fair summary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Somehow.. you.. actually.. maintain.. a straight face while directing OP to a wiki page for what you consider a credible definition of a word.
Wikipedia != Credible Source
[–]antilopes -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Most of what I said applies to any new, developing word with complexity and subtlety in its meanings. It is nothing to do with mansplaining or with feminism, just general language skills. Particularly the advice to look for sources from the relevant specialty or an encyclopedia rather than a general purpose dictionary. Many people have not spent much time getting looking up words and don't think to look beyond a dictionary. Those of us who are well practiced at using a variety of sources for investigating words know how limited dictionaries often are.
Any current encyclopedia is probably fine, I chose Wikipedia for convenience because I know it links its sources and is kept up to date, and because I'd read that page previously and consider it is accurate, in the light of my experience I mentioned. You are hereby permitted to look at a different encyclopedia.
I'm familiar with the "lol, Wikipedia" response from the earliest days of Gamergate. The gators were enraged by their failure to get control of the page about them so unsurprisingly they felt it was reasonable to try to trash the reputation of the whole site. Various others have joined in, typically right wing or conservative types dismayed at the EXTREME CULTURAL MARXIST PROPAGANDA INFECTING EVERY PAGE.
The subjects I am knowledgeable about are not too controversial so like most people who know about things, I find Wikipedia pretty accurate about them.

I think I have been clear and consistent. You have danced around like a junior high school debater looking for ways to score a point. The "pile of words that mean nothing" evasion is traditionally used when everything is lost and attempting to answer is futile.
The gatekeeping accusation was the most extensively silly. I am the only person in the thread which didn't give a definition but pointed do a discussion of various meanings which have been used. Your attempt to jujitsu that back into gatekeeping was painful to see. I agree, we're done.

Mansplaining
Mansplaining (a blend of the word man and the informal form splaining of the verb explaining) means "(of a man) to comment on or explain something to a woman in a condescending, overconfident, and often inaccurate or oversimplified manner".
Author Rebecca Solnit ascribes the phenomenon to a combination of "overconfidence and cluelessness". Lily Rothman of The Atlantic defines it as "explaining without regard to the fact that the explainee knows more than the explainer, often done by a man to a woman".In its original use, mansplaining differed from other forms of condescension in that it is rooted in the sexist assumption that a man is likely to be more knowledgeable than a woman. However, it has come to be used more broadly, often applied when a man takes a condescending tone in an explanation to anyone, regardless of the age or gender of the intended recipients: a "man 'splaining" can be delivered to any audience.

Depends which discussions. It has been flung at me maybe a dozen or so times, I thought maybe 3/4 of the time it was not helpful.
I'm used to being around feminists so am mindful of their sensitivity to having men tell them about women's stuff. It also gets used to describe gratuitous explaining that was not asked for by a woman, and that can be valid or silly point scoring, also some women are really sensitive to that.
When "mansplaining" is just used as shit to throw in an argument I get the same amount of it as any other guy. It is frustrating. Online I might withdraw if it is on a women's sub since other women seeing that word often have a hive defence response. IRL I defend or apologise as appropriate.
I don't mind having the word around despite it being used in shitty ways sometimes. It keeps me aware of my own communications and at least some others are becoming more aware.

When you say they're really sensitive - do you think that it's acceptable to be very sensitive about something like that ?

Yeah I've noticed this too. Even when the accusation is ridiculous it seems to work as the minute men flare from Fallout 4 - suddenly tons of people are upvoting her and downvoting the person she's arguing, with no real arguments seeming to be present. The accusation of "Mansplaining" or "Sealioning" is often accompanied by a form of discussion ragequit as well.
I'm kind of torn. I get that it's a real thing, but I don't think I've ever witnessed it being used accurately. It's always used as a rhetorical weapon.

I don't think the word "mansplaining" has any place in an argument unless there is mutual respect and goodwill. I see a ton of mansplaining on this sub but it would be counterproductive to use that word, the guys would just have a REEEEfest.
Speaking of oversensitive people, it is not up to men to mansplain to women that their sensitivity is excessive and they should try to be more like men. Their sensitivity about that comes from their own experiences of being condescended to / not listened to / gaslighted.

Are you suggesting that women are oversensitive as a group and unlikely to change? That sounds very much like the 19th century idea of "hysteric" women which was used to justify banning them from the workplace and voting.
[–]antilopes 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
No I'm suggesting men's reactions to the existence of the word "mansplaining" are oversensitive, and that these hysterical men should be banned from the workplace and from voting.
Also that it seems to me these hysterical men, soon to be unemployed and disenfranchised, are likely to be exactly the type of men who mansplain. Anyone can not realise a random woman is an engineer though some men have a talent for not paying attention to signs of expertise. But any fool should realise it is not OK to assume himself more of an expert on women's experience of their own lives than women themselves. That is classic mansplaining by any definition.
He could ask and be told that yes, women condescend too. And that men explaining or condescending or both at once to a woman are not necessarily mansplaining. But that would mean listening to carefully to women while respecting they are authorative about their own experience, which is the signature non-move of the mansplainer.

That’s uh.... quite extreme. I’m assuming you’re speaking in hyperbole.
[–]antilopes 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I recently stopped using /s all the time. I hate it but I'm going to have to go back to using it always.

I still don't quite understand what you're trying to say in that comment. You wrote:
It sounds to me like you were talking about overly sensitive women here, yet when I asked you about this, you're writing about men.
