That's random. What is the job anyway, just office work? I know in Britain some jobs have an exception under the Equality Act that allow only women (or only men) to apply to a certain job. In some cases you can see where they are coming from, such as if a woman needs a full time personal carer she'd probably be more comfortable with a female carer rather than a male one.

But this one is pretty unnecessary.

Has anyone else mentioned that you are not allowed to discriminate based on age either? That's a HUGE no no in the hiring process. If this ad is real, then they are setting themselves up for serious legal implications.

Umm. Well, here in Canada that breaks at least two laws in the ad itself. You can't (legally) discriminate on gender or age. Everybody does, but it's not legal. The "send a picture" part is just weird.

To be fair I see offerings on craigslist for shared living spaces say "dudes only" or something to that effect at about a 20% rate. "No drama wanted" is usually the rationale given.

Actually, as far as personal assistant's go it pretty common for people to look for one of the same gender. Especially if your a type A person who is likely to have them run errands that might make somebody of the opposite sex uncomfortable. Granted the way it was worded in the original post implied that it was more a safety issue, which is completely screwed up.

don't worry. it's probably not legit. first of all, it's on Craigslist. second, the demand for pictures? everybody responding to that ad, really ought to send a pic of their middle finger.

and even if it is legit, the fact that this person manages multiple production companies is sounding off alarm bells in my head. chances are this is low budget "media." and speaking as somebody who has been screwed over in three out of the three times I've worked in low budget (through people I knew before, not just a Craigslist ad) I can feel confident in saying, you're not missing out on much.

Well c'mon. Some people are more comfortable with their own kind than others. Like myself, I'm personally scared of most men I don't know we'll due to personal reasons. I would feel safer working with a woman in a confined space because that's how my mind works.Yes, I know it's irrational. But it can't be helped. That might be the case here.

I Must say, if this is an underlying sexist view of the employer then fair enough, this is bad. But if it's simply because a girl would rather have a female co-worker than a male then I don't see anything wrong with this.

Surely as men who browse a subreddit called Mens rights and protest the hypocrisy of feminists, wouldn't it be better for us to view everything in an understanding fashion as opposed to "FOCUSES ON ONE GENDER... THIS IS NOT FAIR NOR EQUAL!" People are free to hire who they want, and if it is a private role for a personal assistant, I'm pretty sure a woman would want another woman just as a man would want another man-oh wait no a man would probably want a woman too.

But still... This is hardly sexist, the only thing you can take from this is that the woman who will be your co worker is afraid of getting raped because apparently all us men do is rape. But still, there's nothing to suggest that.
