Background: I'm a 21 year old male with 2 1/2 year old son, and a wonderful fiance.

I was on the bus today on the way home from my university gym, sitting behind a mother and her young daughter. The girl was probably 4 or 5, and turned around to smile at me. I smiled back, and she ducked down behind the back of the seat, then popped back up again. So she starts playing peek-a-boo, and then I hide and pop back up and she starts laughing.

I guess the sight of her happy daughter was a red flag for her mom, as her mom then turned around and raised her eyebrows at me, saying, "stop". The mom then whispered something to the girl, who promptly turned around and the mom gave another glare at me.

My initial reaction was one of assuming she was just an asshole, then it hit me. If she was simply pissed off about her daughter horsing around on the bus she wouldn't have told ME to stop, she'd have told her daughter. She was telling ME to stop because she was telling me that I'm a pedophile, or creep or inappropriate or any other thing that I'm not.

I've read stories about things like this happening to men, and I've always thought, "that's fucked up", but I've never understood what it's like to be on the receiving end. Feels fucking awful. Feels like you ARE a goddamned pedophile. It makes you feel inappropriate and wrong, and ashamed. I kept it together until I made it into my apartment and then I broke down into tears. My awesome fiance called me and helped me get over it, but as someone who loves children I felt crushed. Agh how awful.
