I've noticed the insistence that women want/value commitment from men. I disagree, women don't need anything from men.

I think this comes from men's incapability to reconcile women wanting relationships for recreation only. Grasping for any reason, men look at what women complain about most, a lack of men willing to commit to a long-term monogamous relationship. Therefore, that's what women must want the most, right?

No. "Commitment" is a blanket term meant to describe something men would rather dismiss. The commitment women want is to what both agreed on when they got together. Men know this but don't see it that way. To him, she ought to be agreeing to tolerate what he does throughout the relationship. His solution, since he can't have is view without losing his girlfriend, is to dismiss her view altogether by shrouding it in a vague label like "commitment".

What both men and women know is that commitment means obligation. Women want a man that takes their obligations seriously. Everyone wants that. Unless you describe it as commitment, then you're being needy and no one wants that.
