I’m old and remember online dating before it was on apps. I also remember how easy it was to pick up someone at a club or bar. Casual sex with strangers it’s new. I think the same kinds of people are still doing the same things. Apps make it easier to lie about it if you want to though.

I’d expect Covid has made that difference though. More people hooking up by app than night club because …no night clubs

For sure OLD has changed body counts. I wouldn't say Hinge alone, but Tinder and others too. Think about it: before OLD, you only physically encountered X people a day. You spent most of your time at work or sleeping, so how many new people were you really meeting? And how many of them were single? And how many of those singles were about your age and attractive? It was a crapshoot.

Now, you have an entire menu of verified single people in your area. All those people who didn't happen to be in the supermarket, at the gym, or at the bar the same time you were. You can swipe on 100 in the space of an hour while on the sofa. And you can do that for hours every day. How would this not increase sexual activity?

That said, the women on apps will probably be less sexually conservative, so it's a skewed sample. Not all women are on them. So extrapolating would be an error. I think you might just see a growing disparity in the number of women on apps vs. those not on them rather than an overall surge in partner count.

"Average" usually refers to the "mean" value in a statistical set, and unless your argument is that women are having lesbian relationships or 2f1m threesomes then the average is identical between men and women.

The 'median' number of sex partners is a different story, due to the 80/20 rule.

I don't understand why you are singling out Hinge in particular. There are a lot of reasons that average men are having less sex than average women, the accessibility of attractive men via internet dating is one of them, but the increasing cultural acceptance of female promiscuity is a massive influence.

The idea that women control sex and men relationships is simplistic. Ultimately, the dynamics change depending where you are in the SMV hierarchies. The dynamics between high level men and women are quite different than at average level. And at the very bottom, you get to a place where often neither gender is sufficiently attracted to the other to want sex with what they can get, though you do have to go much further down in the female hierarchy before no men want them.

Why Hinge specifically?

Technically for heterosexuals, the average number of partners should be identical because whenever a man has sex so does a woman. What can be different is the median and that will tell you which side has a more skewed distribution of n counts.

I'd say it probably does make sense that casual sex is more evenly distributed among women than men. Even women will often admit " well duh, obviously for casual sex I'm going to go for the tallest, hottest biggest dick guy I can get, you men would do the same if you had the same kind of options that us women do"

So imo, it's just common sense at this point that they are probably having more casual sex, especially if you compare average looking men to average looking women. However the hot men probably have more sexual partners than anyone.

I think the internet (this being an issue far beyond mere OLD) has actually lowered the amount of casual sex but created a perception of more casual sex. Plenty of reasons for why/how:

certain influential groups/corps/whatever pushing a narrative, given the nature of "sex sells" giving the impression that there's more casual sex going on might promote greater consumerism as a byproduct.
people flaunt every moment of their lives on social media, and pushing their own narrative of having exciting lives.
- people also post everything of others when they can
on the flip side fear mongering has made the world much more scary than it actually is.

A lot of this also applies to other facets of people's lives.

As someone who grew up when online dating was just beginning to hit...I think it has been a net positive for women and a negative for men. But then I am not a young person dating right now so maybe things are picking up for the younger generation.

Absolutely, most women in my social circle(mid to late 20's) have at least 20+ bodies, I even know a couple who are well over 50. And this is just what they feel comfortable disclosing, I'm pretty sure their actual numbers are larger. But this isn't true for all women, this mostly relates to places where Tinder and hookup culture are quite popular. In more traditional countries and cultures women's n counts are more than likely, still the same.

There are more women than men alive at any single moment of time at least in western countries. I'm not going to count sausage fests India and China. The ratio is basically even for the sake of argument. This means in a closed system the average body count of men and women is the same. Unless you count women sleeping with each other, then yeah.
