Assuming looks are alright, it's almost always down to poor self-esteem and even worse social skills. The former prevents the treatment of the latter so the cycle continues.

The truest ForeverAlones are the gross looking ones who possess zero talents- they basically suck at everything, writing, sport, being witty, coordination, theres a lot of thungs people can be good at and oftrn a talented person is good at a lot if things but these true FAers just suck at everything includung looking hot.

They've learned over time that there are things about them that make it more likely than not that women will reject them, so they stop approaching. I know its nice to think our preferences are our preferences but there's nothing new under the sun. We have a narrow set of things we find attractive. People outside those norms suffer.

A history of abuse and neglect. Self esteem issues so severe that they refuse to accept that anyone finds them attractive. Atrocious social skills. Serious mental illness (autism, schizophrenia, depression, social anxiety, etc).

In the vast majority of cases it's depression, anxiety, and other psychological issues. Most of them are so caught up in the idea that they can't find anyone that would love them, or even want to be friends with them, that it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. You'll find a lot of threads where an FA describes a totally normal casual social interaction with someone, but they feel like they came across as a total loser and should never even bother leaving the house.

It's a shame that so many of them blame it on looks, when like you said they're usually average or above average. They genuinely believe that their problems can't be helped.

What makes people unable to form relationships for their entire lives?

Very unfortunate interplay between nature and nurture, in a nutshell. We don't reach all the usual social/romantic milestones on time; from there on it gets progressively harder.

A lot of the people I see posting pictures on r/ForeverAlone look pretty normal to me, like the kind of guys who find relationships all the time. What gives?

I think this guy may be somewhat representative of your typical FA. If you have the time check his other videos to get a feeling for being FA.

The whole thing is pretty complex and frustrating. People want to make sense of it all. That's why you'll often see examples of reductionism in FA community; i.e. it's all looks, mental illness, or lacks of confidence...

I suspect this might be part of a larger trend going on. If you do some googling, you'll easily find articles about rising number of old virgin in Japan, or how young people (in the West) are having less sex than older generations.

That's about it, really. We are pretty much unrecognized by the wider society for various reasons, and not much research has been done on this phenomena, except surveys dealing with promiscuity and such. I know it looks like we whine all the time, but really, it's more about venting among "our own kind".

They are mediocre. Being mediocre is just as bad as being ugly. When you are a mediocre looking man, luck will be a huge factor in your sexual success since we all know these guys are not good looking enough for women to literally seek out and approach.
