The other day my friend posted this vision of what a modern man should be, and how the illogical, harmful or redundant aspects of masculinity need to be abandoned. It got me thinking. Not only about how a lot of masculinity is just plain bullshit I've got no time for, but also how much of femininity is offensive to me as well. One thing that stands out in particular in femininity to me is how lying is seen as acceptable, yet rarely owned up to, and often not even recognised.

A common trope illustrates this. "What's wrong?" asks a concerned man. "Nothing!" replies an obviously upset woman. This is considered completely acceptable and the more I think about the more it baffles me. It is effectively lying to people they care about. It is conditioning those concerned about them to not trust what they say at face value. It's telling people that they're a liar, and they are not to be believed, and that to communicate effectively with them everything they say must be second-guessed.

Even more insiduous to me is lying to "protect peoples feelings" - which is nothing trying to a put a benevolent spin on a lack of integrity and deception. Telling their fat friends they look attractive, encouraging them to continue down the path of poor health. Faking orgasms, encouraging men to continue down a path of substandard technique and dishonest sexual experiences. Acting friendly to other women they despise, encouraging them to continue down a path of expecting treachery and betrayal from their own gender.

I've recognised that the violence, wastefulness, greediness and lechery of traditional masculinity has to stop. Have any women stood up to the deception, coddling and lack of integrity in traditional femininity?

Maybe this is me slowly coming around to rejecting gender roles entirely. Maybe both masculinity and femininity are so fundamentally beyond reproach and we should just abandon it all and just be plain human beings. I don't even know anymore.
