On the off chance anyone here hasn't seen this a few dozen times, a quick summary: as part of Google's pay equality efforts, they found that (also as part of a pay equality effort) one of the managers was using discretionary funds to give more pay raises to women over men. They adjusted the wages and I think they paid back pay but said it was ok that the manager did so.

Women are riskier hires then men. They will likely take more time away from work. Years in some cases. They should be paid less then men. But they aren’t. Most are paid more then men for doing less. In my job women get paid the same as men. But no women do it. Because it’s hard.

So I actually read the article, and Google literally does this survey every year. The reason why the specific year this article is talking about had more men being underpayed is because 2017 was the first year NEW HIRES were included in the study. Since Google's work force at the time was 69% men, more men were found to be underpayed.

But whatever, it's easier to be outraged than use your brain.

I'm not sure if people here actually want the truth on it, but the headline here is not a good summary of the articles.

Yes, newly hired men received less money than women in the same position. This was specifically about engineers, which Google has grades for internally. The new male hires were Level 4 engineers and they received less than female Level 4 engineers.

However... Women were never hired at Level 4. The study compared newly hired men to women who were already working there for 2+ years.

The issue raised was not that Google was not paying equal salary to people in the same position, it was that Google hired women at Level 3 despite their qualifications and exeperience. In fact, in one noted example, a woman with years of experience and the same qualifications was hired in Level 3, while a newly graduated male hire with the same credentials and no experience was immediately hired in Level 4.

The men have received pay raises after this finding, but Google says that it needs to look into the hiring disparity. And it should.

Eh. The “wage gap” is the term that’s fixated on and it doesn’t really capture the entire problem. For certain jobs, women will be paid more than men on average, but this is because they’re more often being overlooked for promotions. What happens then is that you have women staying at the same level for longer than men do. A senior sales rep is paid better than a junior sales rep, but they’re still beneath the regional manager.
