[–]Fafnir22 16 points17 points18 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Pretty sure two players whose last grand slam wins were 30 years ago weren’t front of mind for the umpire.
[–]sardarjionbeach 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Does that mean they get around without any fine or penalty?
[–]TheGoat0 6 points7 points8 points (6 children) | Copy Link
McEnroe recieved a match penalty in the Austrailian open 1990.
[–]sardarjionbeach -1 points0 points1 point (5 children) | Copy Link
Just once. And how many times he did things in court. You think one penalty for all what he did on court was justified ?
[–]Fafnir22 1 point2 points3 points (4 children) | Copy Link
Probably not. Doesn’t mean that decades later that equates to rampant sexism. Clutch if at straws here. They’re different generations of players.
[–]sardarjionbeach 0 points1 point2 points (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]Fafnir22 3 points4 points5 points (0 children) | Copy Link
You don’t even have an argument.
You’re saying that incidents that happened over 3 decades ago shouldn’t get a “free pass”. So what are you going to do then? I just don’t see the relevance of an incident in 1984 or whatever to this blatant breach of the rules. No sane person would compare the two.
[+]hoddap -9 points-8 points-7 points (10 children) | Copy Link
Gonna be the devil's advocate here: from what I understood, from reading news articles, is that men generally got away with saying worse stuff. It's not my opinion as I don't know shit about tennis, but that's what's been said.
[–]mrmooocow41 points [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't know jack about tennis either, but in the video even the commentator agrees that men do say worse, but with the important caveat that they stop after the warning which is why they seldom get to the 2nd and 3rd infraction penalties, whereas Serena just would not stop.
Also, her main argument is that she wasn't being coached- yet at the end her coach says, "To be honest, I was coaching." His defense was that everyone coaches it is like a openly broken rule. He said he has never been called out on it before in his career, and it is odd to happen during such an important match.
[–]hoddap 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah I get the coaching thing. But I didn't knew that she dragged it on after warnings, so I stand corrected.
[–]Removed_Californian 1 point2 points3 points (7 children) | Copy Link
some men have done worse. However, they were smart enough to stop at the warning. Serena kept coming back for more.
[–]ABC_Florida 4 points5 points6 points (6 children) | Copy Link
Furthermore, she had the arrogance to demand an apology from the judge. Stating "I never cheat!". Well Serena, nobody said you do. He said, your coach was breaking the rule.
BTW, remember when she threatened a line judge with murder?!
[–]Removed_Californian 0 points1 point2 points (5 children) | Copy Link

Played the "You wouldn't do this if I were a man" card, check. Played the "I'm a mother" card, check. Played the entitled girl who is owed an apology by the referee, check.
This is a girl who once threatened to shove a ball down a ref's throat, and even if she lost, made more money yesterday than I'll ever make in my entire life.
But she's the victim.

People train and dream their whole lives to get to where she was, then add to that playing someone who is considered one of the top players in the sport? Her victory should have been the happiest moment of her life, but it wasn’t because of Serena “the bitch” Williams.
She even said during her acceptance speech, “the crowd was cheering for Serena”. You know how demeaning that is? To know that your victory is a mute point because your opponent decided to make it all about her?
Fuck Serena Williams, I hope this is the start of the end of her career.

So standing up for herself makes her "the bitch"? Every time someone says something like this they prove the point. If it's a dude then they take no shit from nobody. If it's a woman then they are a bitch. This right here is proof positive that there is a double standard.
The whole time I was watching the clip all I could think was that she needs to get her head back in the match and save the complaining for when it's over, but with people like her it's part of the competitiveness that make them champions.
[–]D3at4Not3 7 points8 points9 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Standing up for yourself is one thing. I understand the penalty was completely because of the coach, Serena was not involved in the 'cheating' and I understand why she would be upset.
However, she took it to an unwarranted level; it wasn't an attack on her personal character she just happened to be on the recieving end because unfortunately they can't penalize the stands. Play the game, call out the offical afterwards and clear your name. If that would have been the case she would have started the next game a point behind and could have easily pulled it off. Instead she decided to berate the official without pause causing him to then revoke one of her points on top of it.
[–]RedWingerD 3 points4 points5 points (1 child) | Copy Link
In this situation I don't think this applies. She was caught receiving coaching from the stands and then tried playing the victim card. She repeatedly doubled down on the lie and couldnt control her temper for the rest of the match. Male or female that's a bitchy thing to do
[–]aguyfromfl -2 points-1 points0 points (0 children) | Copy Link
I know "everybody does it" isn't an acceptable excuse, but if that is true you have to at least pause long enough to wonder why she was singled out. Even if it was a bitchy thing to do my point stands. If it was a guy nobody would be on here calling him Jim "the bitch" Jones. You sound reasonable to the point where you would be able to understand that.
[–]Personality__Champ 4 points5 points6 points (3 children) | Copy Link
Your comment is an example of enabling/empowering victim culture. The inevitable result of this, which is shown planely in the video and in the recent case of Asia Argento, is that nobody needs to take responsibility for themselves because they’re all being oppressed. It’s normal for children to have this type of angst but not adult professionals in a functioning society. A mindset like what you displayed in this comment is a symptom of victim hood culture where logic, rules, order and justice are subverted for delusions of oppression. That is post-modernism, that is a path to absurdity that would be comedic if it were’t so clearly harmful to the fabric of civilization. Calling someone a bitch is one thing, expecting rules to bend for feelings and having support from confused people like yourself is something much more dangerous.
[–]aguyfromfl -1 points0 points1 point (2 children) | Copy Link
That's a lot of big words and verbal gymnastics, but none of it negates what I've said. Did she take it too far? I don't know. I don't watch tennis so I don't know what the norms are. Labeling some as a bitch because they stood up for themselves says more about the people calling her that than it does about her. It is a double standard and no amount of downvotes or fancy words will change that FACT.

Shes past her prime for sure but she is still up there. That's a testament to how good she was/is.
The meltdown in yesterday's final was an embarrassment though. In the press conference she was still standing her ground but it was also very obvious that she was giving measured responses to protect her public image. I'm interested to see if her stance changes once she's had time to reflect on things and apply a little humility.
All her apologists on Twitter pissed me off though. Jesus. I was reading all sorts of rubbish questioning why was a white male even umpire for the match. I mean WTF?!

As far as technique goes, movement, and everything tennis-related, she's no better than most of the top 50, but she's still much stronger thanks to all the steroids. Dawg they said greatest female athlete of all time. She is. This isn’t debatable.
[–]Player_Slayer_7 12 points13 points14 points (12 children) | Copy Link
It actually is debatable, since there's at least a few hundred female athletes in the world from all sports, and among tennis players, she's not even 1st in rankings for either singles or doubles. Yes, she was 1st at one point, but she isn't anymore.
[–]YawnDogg -3 points-2 points-1 points (11 children) | Copy Link
What she is ranked now has almost zero to do with her constant ranking as 1st over her career. Her grand slam and tournament wins which she is #1 in. She’s the greatest female athlete ever. You disagree tell me a female who is better. The career is what matters not not what her current rank is. That’s the dumbest shit I ever heard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_career_achievements_by_Serena_Williams
[–]Player_Slayer_7 2 points3 points4 points (10 children) | Copy Link
Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Arguably the greatest female athlete in recorded history, excelling at track and field, golf, basketball and baseball, and this was at a time where female athletes didn't have the same attention as they do now. You want to talk about the greatest female athlete? This is her. Serena Williams is great at Tennis, sure, but what about the rest? To claim that she's the greatest based on her skill at one sport is retarded. She doesn't even hold a candle to Didrikson.
[–]WikiTextBot 5 points6 points7 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Babe Didrikson Zaharias
Mildred Ella "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias (; June 26, 1911 – September 27, 1956) was an American athlete who excelled in golf, basketball, baseball and track and field. She won two gold medals in track and field at the 1932 Summer Olympics, before turning to professional golf and winning 10 LPGA major championships. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest female athletes of all time.

Buwhahaha look I’m all for men’s rights. I’m not for spinning bullshit to fit a narrative. Comparing a woman from the 30s when 90% of women couldn’t compete due to sexism is bullshit. That’s why she was so “good” she was competing against a shitty field of elite aristocratic white women. The comparison is laughable. The level of competition then vs now is not comparable. She would be a rank amateur in today’s sports world. Try again. You could have maybe said Jackie Joyner Kersey but that’s also not even close. Keep going though. You’ve got some solid whack stat finding and I know you just pulled her out your ass this instant via google search
[–]Player_Slayer_72 points [recovered] | Copy Link
Even if she would be an amateur compared to today's athletes, she's still a better fit based on her environment, especially since she excelled in her time in multiple sports rather than just one sport like Williams. Claiming Williams is the best female athlete is ridiculous because her athletic career is centered around a single sport. If your argument was that she was one of the best female tennis players, I'd agree, but when you consider the hundreds of women in history and currently who are amazing at what they do, claiming she's the best of them all is stupid. If you believe she's the best female athlete of all time, how would she fair in any other sport, like Boxing or golf?
Is Williams arguably the best female tennis player? Sure. The best female athlete in general? Not a chance.
[–]YawnDogg2 points [recovered] | Copy Link
PS holler back when you find one modern athlete who’s crossover. Doesn’t exist for a reason it’s too fucking competitive compared to back then when you literally played your cousin bc that’s all the field was. 60 deep max. Stupid stupid stupid
[–]Player_Slayer_73 points [recovered] | Copy Link
You realise triathlons exist, right? You know, where athletes work around multiple sports in a row? Also, there are plenty of crossover athletes that have jumped from one sport to the other. My point is that calling Serena Williams the best at Tennis is fair, but calling her the best female athlete is stupid because there's no way to prove that claim since she only excels at one sport. Hell, calling anyone the best athlete is practically impossible since each sport requires different skills and how could anyone possibly measure the abilities of Serena Williams to that of the best in any other sports category? Calling her the best female athlete holds the same levity as the best female athletes of any other sport.
[–]YawnDogg2 points [recovered] | Copy Link
Ahahhaha what are you going to claim now? a triathlete who couldn’t win a single individual marathon, cycling event or swimming event on any level comparable to Serena is better ? Go ahead show me a female who’s dominated on her level and has her status by an expert metric. You’re a red pill loon. Next you’ll say she’s less than superwoman or Wonder Woman bc they do it all

[–]Player_Slayer_71 point [recovered] | Copy Link
Pick one, because you're contradicting yourself right now.
[–]YawnDogg1 point [recovered] | Copy Link
That’s you my friend. I’m Explaining your current argument. You present some nobody from 30s that’s never been on a legit list bc racism and elitism in sports making it easier for her to “dominate” several sports. Now you’re just saying we can’t. You choose. I choose while subjective we have enough info to conclusively say Serena is the best. So far you’ve just come up with one off shoot attempt to undercut it after another. All of which have been shot down. Now you’re at simply it’s too subjective. You’re wrong there too experts weigh in and they choose her not lady flapper McGhee from 1930. It is not impossible to look at her dominance compare it to others with expert review and reach a consensus as to who the best is. It’s Serena. Tennis is the top women’s sport. She’s the top player in the top sport. Period. No random you pull from the ancient Olympic times will change that
[–]YawnDogg1 point [recovered] | Copy Link
Sure thing moron. Can’t even continue. Our argument is so devoid of historical context or reality. Jesse Owens WAS the GOAT. He wouldn’t even qualify today for Olympic. Historical context matters. Tennis buffs, correct me if I'm wrong but: isn't the "coaching violation" about the coach, not the player?
I mean if Ramos was looking at the coach when the coach made the gestures (which the coach admits to, btw), he probably didn't even see if Serena was watching him. So it wasn't even an "attack on her character". If anything, it's an attack on the coach's character.

Putting it as bluntly as possible:
Serena chimps out over the line judge's insinuation that she received coaching. She demands an apology, proceeds to call the line judge a thief, then judge activates the fuck you protocol and gives her opponent game point.
She then proceeded to demand the referee make an appearance and then started bitching about how men don't get flagged for "saying worse" and that she's only being penalized because she's a woman.

I've played tennis for my whole life. I've even "played" against the Williams twins (more like rally and hope they don't own me) and can confirm. Serena bitched a out lots of stuff. Was annoying. Venus was annoyed too

[–]NaughtyFred 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Her coach was throwing coaching hand signals at her during the game. This is against the rules of Tennis (no coaching allowed once play starts).

I do t think the was PPD. She did use a PP excuse but from what the coach says, everyone is coaching. She did not see it but got called out for it.
She lost her temper way too much and possibly deserved the punishment she got but she turned took defeat semi gracefully.
[–]NaughtyFred 2 points3 points4 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Semi gracefully in the sense that she didn't lie on her stomach and hit the ground with her fists while wailing.

[–]Jurmungolo 1 point2 points3 points (7 children) | Copy Link
Hate to break it to you, but she couldn't beat the 203'rd male player when she was at her prime. From his Wikipedia page:
[–]CX800 0 points1 point2 points (5 children) | Copy Link
Uhhhhh... it literally says Serena was 16. That's not exactly her prime.
She'd get her ass kicked by most men, but citing this article is dumb. They were girls.
[–]Jurmungolo 0 points1 point2 points (4 children) | Copy Link
They are girls, that's the point dumbass. The person I responded to was trying to say she should be playing in the men's bracket. This clearly shows no, she shouldn't.
[–]CX800 -2 points-1 points0 points (3 children) | Copy Link
Hey dipshit, you’re the one who said a 16 year old Serena Willams was in her prime. Your Wikipedia reference is shit because she was a child playing in some made-for-TV bullshit and not a real reflection of her abilities.
I’m not saying she’s as good as male tennis players, I’m just telling you that the way you went about “proving it” was incorrect and dumb.
This is why you shouldn’t just blindly cite Wikipedia articles when you don’t know fuck-all about the topic. Idiot.
[–]Jurmungolo 0 points1 point2 points (2 children) | Copy Link
They said they could beat the number one male tennis player, and the 203rd accepted the challenge. It wasn't some made for TV bullshit. Her mouth got her in trouble then, and it got her in trouble now. Do some research instead of just reading the Wikipedia article you cuck.
And players in their late teens are in their prime.
[–]CX800 -1 points0 points1 point (0 children) | Copy Link
Go look up historical ATP rankings and tell me how many teenagers you see at #1

You’re a dense little cunt, aren’t you?
Serena Williams was not even remotely her best at 16 years old. And it WAS made for TV bullshit, you dolt, go watch the fucking match if you don’t believe me.
I don’t know why or how you possibly think tennis players in their late teens are in their prime. This isn’t gymnastics and that is outrageously false. No one is going to believe that bullshit and this is exactly why you’re just talking straight out of your asshole.
The correct answer is 24, faggot: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/3418037/

I'm not a tennis fan and couldn't usually care about this match, either way, but I know I've seen men destroy racquets, yell and berate the judge much worse than she did, and the announcers even said the penalties have never happened before. How is that possible? Watching the clip, Osaka looked like she was going to win, anyway, but Serena's point is valid. And to those bitching about her calling out men, there's more history of men throwing hissy fits and breaking racquets. They do it more frequently then women.
[–]altarr 30 points31 points32 points (4 children) | Copy Link
What you misunderstand is that yes, they do this, but all of these violations are just warnings to start.
So the player destroys their frame, it is just a warning. If they do it again then it's a point for their opponent. If they do it again they lose that game automatically.
Her first warning was for the coaching that was absolutely happening (as caught on camera and admitted to by the coach himself).
Then she double faults and loses it and destroys the frame. That was the point. (second misconduct and point).
Then she goes mental on the line judge and he tried to talk her down but she wouldn't relent. So he finally gave her the third misconduct and awards the game to her competitor.
Almost all of all the other tirades etc you see from other players are occurring during the first non penalty warning. The vast majority of them knows they get a freebie and make good use of it. They then buck up and play tennis instead of continuing on a useless tirade.
[–]jcpmojo -5 points-4 points-3 points (3 children) | Copy Link
So NO male tennis player has continued beating the judge or broken their racquet after the first warning? That is completely implausible.
[–]coolyman13 1 point2 points3 points (2 children) | Copy Link
He didn’t say none. Are you seriously believing the announcers? They’re fucking idiots. Just cause they say it’s never happened? Come on.
Men have definitely been misconducted. Rafael Nadal has said he’d protest matches with this judge.
This is not a gender thing artard.
[–]altarr 1 point2 points3 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Not only that, but the announcers were all over the place. You could tell they had an opinion that was different than what they presented in the end.
[–]coolyman13 -1 points0 points1 point (0 children) | Copy Link
They certainly didn’t want her to deal with the consequences.
[–]4gotOldU-name16 points [recovered] | Copy Link
They break racquet, they get a warning. She already had a warning, so it's a point. Next infraction it's a game.
Men or women, same protocols
[–]re-bugging 13 points14 points15 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Not after a warning and point penalty
[–]duffmannn 6 points7 points8 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Sure on the first warning or maybe the second to get penalized a point but you gotta be a special kind of dumb to go after the chair like that after you've been penalized twice.
