My partner is honestly the most opinionated man I’ve ever met.

He also has a very strong moral character (which is one of the reasons I love him so much). He does a lot for me. He also loves to talk, about lots of things. I understand that our brains are different, that our hormones are different, we see things differently, we have had different experiences. It’s easy for me to accept we have a difference of opinion/experience.

However, if I share my opinion/experience with my boyfriend and they differ from his, he goes into competition mode. And he doesn’t believe me when I say I feel a certain way, or have experienced such and such, or have a certain belief. I feel very frustrated during these times because why would I lie?! It’s like his opinions are stone cold FACTS that he must DEFEND and nothing else is allowed to exist outside of them. He always tries to beat me into submission and try to get me to admit he is right about perfectly subjective experience.

It’s very invalidating for me and this has been an issue since day one. Is there a way I can have good conversations with my boyfriend where I’m allowed to have my own opinion about something? I feel so alone/misunderstood/unheard. I think I’m activating his “competition” side but is there an alternative? Not being able to talk to him about anything sounds pretty miserable as well.
