IME primary's are idiots when it comes to hormone issues. Make an appt with an endocrinologist and ask about taking Clomiphene Citrate to double those numbers without destroying your fertility.
[–]ChairBorneMGTOW 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Absolutely. I'm on "Clomid" myself, differences in gains is significant. Improves mood too. But monitor your estrogen levels as well, they CAN spike with this treatment. I take a half dose of estrogen blocker one a week and get new bloodwork done every 3 months to monitor.
[–]Fafner2 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You have to watch out for the long-term side effects of these drugs. Androgen receptor insensitivity sounds like a bitch if you develop it through chronic use of such drugs.
[–]duhhhh 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I can't find anything on SERMs causing androgen receptor insensitivity in men. Can you provide any more information?
[–]ChairBorneMGTOW 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Interesting. I'll talk to my endocrinologist about it. I'm in my 40s, and it was actually necessary TRT for me. Maybe cycle it? It's been about 6 months now.
[–]5pecial1 points 10 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link
Notice any hair loss with clomid?
edit: Why would you take an estrogen blocker when clomid itself is one?
[–]JohnnyHammerstickz 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
In a bodybuilding sense, Clomid is used after a cycle to get ones natural test production going again. It will make your body start taking testosterone, but taking any sort of estrogenic compounds without some sort of blocker will most likely result in the negative side effects of using it at least beginning to show
[–]rpscrote 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
clomid is not exactly "an estrogen blocker." It's an estrogen receptor agonist in some tissues and an antagonist in other tissues, but even this is under dispute. It may compete with estrogen (acts like a weak estrogen and blocks binding by actual estrogens) at some locations (namely, pituary) but in others it doesn't
Also I think by estrogen blocker he means aromatase inhibitor which is different but not the same.
Other SERMS are better estrogen blockers, tamoxifen for example.
No hair loss - yet. Well, I've been thinning out up there since before I was taking it, I'm in my early 40s. But it doesn't appear to have accelerated.
As for the estrogen blocker - dunno. I have an endocrinologist who measures my blood levels every 3 months, and he put me on it. I defer to his expertise.

Agreed. Just recently saw my "second opinion" endo. The first one gave me the bullshit ~200-~1200 BS range. I was at 350. That is the same as a 65 year old man and I am only 30. Saw my second and told him all of this. I now am developing puffy nipples and loosing hair. Plus, my girlfriend told him about how I am happy but my mood swings worse than her sister and that I wake up all the time during the night and it's not from snoring.
The endo stated that I would be an excellent case for TRT because I have all these symptoms that are visible, backed by a witness, and I am not all fucking huge and ripped like most he sees but I do workout 5 days a week. So, I am just waiting on a couple test results of my brain because he ball checked me and believes that it is my brain telling my balls not to produce more free T.
Can't wait to get pumped on T.
[–]IndianGainzDance 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I would not suggest the usage of Clomid to treat low T. Clomid has some pretty nasty side effects that don't go away if you get them (vision impairment comes to mind) and can give you mood swings for days. If you're have low T and you're worried about fertility, just get on a low dose of Test-C from your endo and supplement it with HCG to keep your boys running. Most endos will prescribe HCG on top of TRT anyways, so it's a win-win.

Google the drug tested WOMEN'S powerlifting records.
If you're not beating the ones for your weight class, then don't make testosterone your main focus.
Focus on less stress, more vitamins and minerals, and lifting more.

This.
Unless you really genuinely have some disease or genetic defect, I believe any man can reach at LEAST 185 bench / 225 squat / 315 deadlift.
You probably shouldn't worry about your test levels until you hit 225 bench / 265 squat / 345 deadlift. And at that point, you have enough foundation that your body isn't the reason youre not getting laid.
also..you do realize that the average natty muscle gain for any man is around 0.5 lb / month?

like 6 reps.
It is low, but honestly show me a dude that can even do 1rm of 225 bench 265 squat and 345 deadlift and i'll show you a pretty strong looking body compared to average american society.
[–]fuckwithpurpose 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Agreed. Anyone can squat 225 given time and I hope I can make those other numbers at that time; currently working working at 135 sq, 155 dl, 100 bench and upping reps + perfecting form. Slow and steady wins the race, can't wait for the next (iron) plate. I'm <5'6 / 145 / ~18%.
[–]foldpak111 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I remember when I had trouble squatting the 45# bar. Now I can do 5x25 @ 225#, four years later. Keep pushing, brother. Or as Zyzz once put it, "We're all gonna make it, brah!"
except lifting is only one small portion of why low test is shit. If you've got clinically low test, get clomid or test cyp perscription.
OP: Don't put off improving your quality of life because some bro with enough T on the internet thinks your lifts aren't big enough
[–]IWillHaveVengance 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Shoot I reached that in like 3 months of serious lifting. Sure I have lifted before in highscool but that was like a 6 year break.
You're average male should have no problem reaching those results if eat right, lift correctly, and get enough sleep.
[–]rpscrote 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Sure I have lifted before in highscool but that was like a 6 year break.
That's why. Muscle memory is actually a thing, and getting back to a strength level you once had is (scientifically proven) much, much faster than getting there in the first place.
[–]HappyScribe 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The OP is not an average male: he's a 22 year old with the t levels of an 80 year old.
Meditation, Natural Calm (magnesium supplement), Vitamin D, Zinc, sleep, and foam rolling. I'd do that for a solid three months before lifting. RELAX
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It's not impossible to make gains, just a lot fucking harder. I tested at 375, 360, and 325 about 6 months ago (forget what the units are). The 325 was just below the low range and that's what finally "allowed" my doctor to start me on TRT at 100mg of test cypionate per week (inject every 3.5 days at half of that). I'm 22 yrs old right now. But let's go back to before that happened.
I started lifting in high school. In 8th grade gym class, I couldn't even bench the bar. But then I learned about squatting, did SS for 2 years, and started going balls deep with lifting. By the end of junior year, I was deadlifting my max of 445 lbs. My squat was even more insane, around 375 for 5 reps, ass to the grass. My bench was pretty shitty, but I maxed out at 245 once. And this is because squats and deadlifts use more Central Nervous System recruitment, where as bench uses far less muscles and is more dependent on your triceps/pecs instead of full body muscle recruitment.
So even without high test, it's possible to get good gains. You just have to work a lot fucking harder. I was insane with my lifting due to depression and suicidal rage.
But anyways, I started TRT about 6 months ago. I was stalling at about 210 bench press max. My test levels probably dropped since high school. But after a month or two of starting TRT, I skyrocketed up to about 275 bench. Last week I did 225 for 8 god damn reps. That's like the worst player you'll see at the NFL Combine haha. But oddly enough, my squat and deadlift haven't improved very much. Which leads me to believe that muscle mass and muscle strength are very dependent on test levels, but CNS intensive lifts aren't as much. This could possibly explain why females can reach decent squat/deadlift numbers but never bench in comparison to men.
But my advice, you should definitely get TRT. The side effects are nothing to worry about at all if you're sensible and follow a standard dosage regiment. There's no point in something being difficult when you could make it easy with barely any cost. But, DEFINITELY:

Yeah, the official protocol for Nebido (brand name for Test U) is 4 ml every 10-14 weeks. That is 1000 mg test U, which is roughly 600 mg test.
Pretty obvious that it's nowhere near enough. The bare minimum is 100 mg test per week. Very few men can be fine with less.

Lifting with low testosterone is a waste of time. Hell, even life without it is. Start drinking raw millk if you can find it and get your dht and estrogen levels checked. Good luck.
[–]abetterarsonist 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
What's the deal with raw milk? I googled it but got articles trying to talk the reader out of it. Do you have any links on hand to sources detailing how out relates to testosterone and lifting?
[–]Kalidane 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Switching to raw milk comes in at around #47 on the list of important things to do.
If you're nailing the preceding 46 things, then I don't think the theoretical possibility of a .13% increase in gains is gonna mean shit. You just need to up your next cycle.
Raw milk has health risks and is likely of no extra benefit over milk or even chocolate milk (the premium recovery drink).

[–]2rp_valiant 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
it's worth lifting, but it's also worth getting a second opinion from another doctor. If you can find relevant information by yourself to suggest it's low and your doctor decides you don't need treatment, it's well within your rights to reject his opinion and demand a referral from your doctors/insurance to a better doctor.
[–]Derbi50 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I swear this was the question that popped up in my mind. Lifting this past year has done wonders forg physique and has definitely made me significantly more manly than before. But I don't know if that necessarily means I have a sharp increase in T
[–]fuckwithpurpose 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
My understanding is that indirectly yes, please somebody correct me if I'm wrong. If T is a positive function of muscle mass then increasing muscle mass should do it. To what extent, I don't know.
Anecdotally, I've been lifting hard for the past few months, early 30's. Active as a kid, sedentary about ages 18-27. In the past month I wake up with wood and get uncontrollable boners in situations where I should get boners, whereas before and all through my 20s I almost never got them. Is that more T? I dunno.
Correlated in my mind, at least.

interval training (sprints) is claimed by many to increase testosterone levels - among many other benefits
worth a try?
[–]fuckwithpurpose 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Worth a try, actually I guess I've been doing this a little bit by doing faster supersets. 5x5 with lower load from 3x5 increases time a lot so I've started doing some semi-complementary sets of things and going faster--eye balled based on what's available/nearby, eg. squats, cable machine, kettle bells, dumbells, a bench are close. Thanks
[–]TRPrinny 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'll chime in and say I've been experiencing the same effects.
I've lifted on and off half-assedly since I was a teen, but when ever I go hard, such as I am now by lifting 5 times a week and actually make gains, there is a noticeable difference. I wake up with wood almost every time, and not to mention my runs of success with girls also coincide with the peaks of muscle mass in my life.

Those aren't normal at all.
Art of Manliness website had a series of articles on T, check it out.
The T range you find in clinics is an absolute joke because 90 year olds test for their T levels alongside virile bodybuilders. What you need to be aware of and pay attention to are what your T levels need to look like FOR YOUR AGE. Art of Manliness has a useful chart in this regard.
I got mine checked last year (mid twenties here) and total T was 570. I want something closer to 800.
What I've come to realize is upping T levels is a holistic lifestyle thing. Oh and stress is a big T killer. Get meditating, if you aren't.

[–]BleauGumms 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]michael_wilkins 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Go find a GP that will prescribe you testosterone. I don't think it['ll be hard with that low test levels.
"Normal" is such a wide range it's almost useless. I'm not a doctor and I have no medical training or background, but this is one area that I feel confident in saying Dr's are idiots in.
The "normal" range is from memory from about 250 up to 1200 (is it nanograms per litre?) of free testosterone.
That's an absurd range to be considered normal.
[–]fuckwithpurpose 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
My new GP is constantly asking if I need anything, impressed that I'm crushing at the gym instead of requesting meds to drug out the stress. (He knows I smoke weed; nbd, med, I get the impression he does too). Maybe I should have him run my numbers, curious now... he'd write me one in a second if I were that low. I never had a good insurance plan before so I under utilize doctors now that I have access.

https://www.endocrine.org/~/media/endosociety/Files/Publications/Clinical%20Practice%20Guidelines/FINAL-Androgens-in-Men-Standalone.pdf
The above is a link to the long-winded summary of guidelines published by the Endocrine Society on treatment of testosterone deficiency in men. Here is a summary of it:
The low end of normal testosterone level is 200. While testosterone does decrease with age, the decrease is relatively small, as men who have fathered children in their 80's can attest. Remember that a man's testosterone production is far greater than necessary for normal sexual function, so a decrease would have to be quite dramatic to cause any notice.
Symptoms of testosterone deficiency could include low energy, low mood, and sexual dysfunction. Some suggest it could also lead to obesity. It can also cause male osteoporosis.
Testosterone level should be rechecked at least twice, if they're less than 300, preferably in the morning, because they tend to fluctuate rapidly.
Men who are confirmed to have low testosterone level should be evaluated for specific causes, such as testicular dysfunction and pituitary dysfunction. Only if these are not found should treatment be initiated, in the form of testosterone replacement (routes vary and are somewhat controversial), should be initiated.
Those of you who are taking clomiphine (clomid) are playing with fire, as this is not accepted treatment. Clomiphine blocks estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus, which forces higher levels of gonadotropins to be released (LH and FSH). These gonadotropins then are supposed to stimulate the testes to produce more sperm and testosterone, but if testosterone production is the problem, it won't work. I'm not even sure if this will have any effect in a man, since we produce very little estrogen as it is.
I'm not even sure if this will have any effect in a man, since we produce very little estrogen as it is.
This is totally wrong.

This is below below normal, even than the lower modern average testosterone level. Before you try TRT though (I'm personally against taking hormones simply because I'm an athlete and can't) I'd try:
This is what I do and the cumulative effect of living like this just makes you feel awesome. The sex hormone is the first thing to go if you're living unhealthily, since the body deprioritizes fighting and fucking when it has to struggle just to live. But man testosterone makes you feel awesome. Hope this lists helps!
[–]trpMilo 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Oh and if you can get into it, meditate to relieve stress. Also joining a sports league if there's a sport you enjoy and are good at, the competition helps, but not everyone has time/the proclivity for these things

I think this is a universal in the animal kingdom, and it makes the most elementary sense through the economic lens on animal behavior. Fitness and ability to fuck are a direct function of fitness to survive and pass on your genes, IMO. Beef and eggs, yo.

[–]testonator 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Your testosterone levels are heavily influenced by different factors, even the test that showed 239 might be off. Check your levels every two months for atleast 6 months and you will have a better idea of where you are.
You have a couple of different options regarding your low T.
TRT which is a lifelong treatment, dialing in the right amount and all the hassle that comes with just getting it at your age sucks you should view this as a last resort kind of thing, same with pinning yourself (steroids). If there is anything in that regard that you should try its restarts with clomid, hcG etc.
Hows your diet, workout regime, lifestyle in general like?
[–]sandbm5 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Test for vitamin d. Most people are low. If you happened to have gotten your testosterone checked when you were spending a lot of time in the sun the first time, and you haven't been lately, this could be a possible cause. Time of the day is another huge factor. Always test when you first wake up for most accurate results.
[–]rockinhard130 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Are you getting enough cholesterol in your diet? Vitamin D too?
[–]Kalidane 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
^ Carbs and fats are required. Specific micro-nutrients too. But if you're eating a sensible varied diet, a dietary cause of endocrine issues is highly unlikely.
'clean diet' means different things to different people so I don't know what you're eating, and what you're avoiding.
[–]FaustoRMD -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
And that's one of the reasons of your low testosterone levels. Tobacco increases all good androgens and blocks estrogens. Get organic tobacco and make your own cigarettes, in two months of smoking 10 per day you should see good results.
Nicotine. Not tobacco.
I can't tell if you're trolling when you tell someone to start smoking for an undetectable elevation in test levels.
[–]FaustoRMD 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's not about testosterone but estrogen and DHT. Smokers have a higher amount of good androgens (DHT and testostone) than non-smokers and less level of estrogens (nicotine inhibits aromatase). Hell, I have a friend that use steroids and never needed an ai.
[–]thisornothing 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Med student here. Just finished a urology rotation, so I've dealt with testosterone levels a bit. If you don't have any symptoms (high fatigue, hair growth abnormalities, ED, low libedo, etc) it's unlikely that adding testosterone to your system would have any beneficial effects. Also, keep in mind that testosterone can vary widely from day to day and by the time of day.
Why were your levels checked in the first place?
