Summary

You should treat your inner voice (that voice inside your head that tells you that you should do x or be afraid of y) like you would treat a plate.

Body

Your plate has a bad day and starts whining at you about her problems. Should you validate her, become an emotional tampon, maybe buy some flowers and transition into the role of beta orbiter? Fuck no. Amused mastery and teasing is much more effective than giving validation. Or you can choose not to deal with that shit, ignore her and maybe hit the gym.

Your inner voice has a bad day and it starts whining at you about its problems. Should you validate it, become its emotional tampon, maybe go eat some ice cream and transition into the role of beta orbiter to your inner voice? Fuck no. Amused mastery and teasing is much more effective than giving validation. Or you can choose not to deal with that shit, ignore your inner voice and maybe hit the gym.

You're not your inner voice. If your inner voice starts whining at you, then you don't have a problem. It has a problem, but that's not your concern. After all, we're treating our inner voice like a plate, and her problems are not your problems.

For example, say your inner voice tells you to eat some ice cream. You decide not to eat ice cream but you're struggling to resist the cravings. Many people try to solve this by reasoning with your inner voice: "yes I do want ice cream but I'm on a diet," etc. That's just like validating and then reasoning with a whining plate. Bad idea. Reasoning won't work and giving validation will only make her feel unsafe, leading to more whining in the future.

Instead, use TRP techniques. You can agree & amplify: "I'm not going to go to the supermarket to get ice cream. Instead, I'm going to travel to the ice cream mountain, plant my flag there and be crowned penguin king!" You can make fun of it: "you want ice cream, inner voice? You don't even have a mouth." You can ignore it and hit the gym. You can count to ten, focusing on your breathing for that period, and then doing something else. Just don't take your inner voice seriously.

Finally, if your inner voice has a good idea and you decide to follow its suggestion, then that's fine. All I'm saying is that if you don't want to do what it says and it's whining at you, then you should treat it like a plate.

Lessons learned

  • You are not your inner voice.

  • If your inner voice whines at you, then treat it like a whining plate. This is both more effective now and in the long term than giving it validation.
