You qualified the reason and then started painting it in a negative light by saying that "oh it's a sense of entitlement that bothers me" - that is pretty much the anti-thesis of letting the hamster wheel spin.

You essentially said stuff, validated it and explained yourself to them and they judged you poorly. Granted their responses were negative, but that was the direction you'd let it head because of your explanation. My suspicion is that their response would have been better if you hadn't explained why and just left it at.

"Oh i like to split the bill when i go on dates" or at least given a positive statement to qualify it.

To be honest, paying for a girl on a date isn't always a terrible thing, it can happen both ways but in the case where you're trying to pay out of a sense of white-knightery/beta buxing then you're probably doing it wrong.

The real issue comes with that the world is constructed in a way to assume that men "should" pay for dinner because you're male while asserting that women and men should be treated equally in a social sense.

There's nothing wrong with paying for people, i do it for my buddies, i do it for girls - but if i feel that i'm obliged to do it or i'm satisfying some bullshit then I just won't.

To agree with you though, in some cases (and the mentality of the women you spoke with) it sets you up to be the provider. And while providing is certainly not a bad thing - if you are abundant and rich in life then why not spread that wealth to your circle if it helps make yours and their lives better? It becomes bad when they expect it as a matter of course and are settling for the second best, which is:

Some guy who can provide for them but isn't really their ideal mate

That's just a silver medal and is always outclassed by gold

I don't know; I once worked at a place where I was a laid back wallflower. My friend was a supervisor, and he kept trying to get me included in the group, but, nothing was happening. Then, one day, I sort of got into it with this hot chick in the group. I was about a male equivalent of an HB2, and she was about an HB7-8. It wasn't mean, and I can't remember even the point, but, we kept going at it. At the end, we all went back to work, and my friend/supervisor, said something like "Now, you've screwed yourself, and are just irritating these people more."

But, the facts of the matter were: I had broken the ice, showed that I had had some spirit and wasn't afraid to engage, and I could do so without being a fuck. The group accepted me from then on. I think that you did well. Your co-worker had been asking about your dating life, so, that is private stuff. The comments about your not getting laid were, imho, those of intimates, not of active evildoers. They didn't scurry off to HR, they stayed and corrected you. Sounds like you may have just showed them what an asshole/badboy that you can be. You got their emotions piqued. I see no bad in this situation.
