You know what's hilarious about this? A lot of the sexual attraction a woman feels is controlled by hormones, you know what else is controlled by hormones? Pregnancy. Thus when a woman is on the pill, the hormonal imbalanced created shifts sexual attraction, because her body is tricked into thinking it is pregnant. This seems like a dual mating strategy, and in modern times it is. But consider the following:

50 000 years ago a woman had primarily 3 requirements for a good mate:

Desirable genetics, for strong children with a good chance of reaching adulthood
Protection capability, to fend off dangers
Provisioning capability, to secure access to food and resources

The latter two were largely a result of homo sapiens having evolved into large-brained creatures, making childbirth and early child rearing very taxing for the mother. From late pregnancy and the first few years after birth the child would bog the female down to an extent which made it imperative for survival that someone else took care of her, at least to some extent. She needed to bond with a male who could provide what she and her kid(s) needed for survival.

This is common knowledge, my point is this: Who had these traits?

The first two are obviously alpha male characteristics. So attraction to visual alpha male phenotypical traits would draw the female towards the promise of good genetics and protection capability. But what about provisioning?

There were no weak men with resources 50 000 years ago. If Billy had something that Chad wanted, Billy would either have to give it up or be killed. The possibility for a weak man to control resources of any significance is an invention of modern society. Back in the day only alphas controlled resources, although they may have shared with betas in the context of group dynamics.

And so it is a misconception that the female sexual strategy is inherently dualistic. Alpha male characteristics promised good genetics as well as both protection and provisioning capability. Betas had nothing to offer up until a blink of an eye ago.

It makes perfect sense that females should be genetically programmed for attraction towards alphas, for every reason imaginable.

But what about modern society? Well actually 3 major changes have taken place:

It has become possible for a beta to control resources
It has become possible for an alpha to not control resources
Society now predominantly rewards beta traits (i.e. being a good little cog in the machinery) instead of alpha traits

It is modern society which has created a divide between the old good genetics and protection capability on the one hand, and provisioning capability on the other. The dualism in the female sexual strategy that results is not inherent per se.

But nevertheless it's there, 50 000 years later. And it explains the phenomenon referred to in the OP.

So what is a man to do? Quite simply what men have always needed to do, in order to not become part of the majority of men who produced no surviving offspring: Build themselves up to the best of their ability to pass off an impression of good genetics along with protection and provisioning capability.

Which today means hitting the gym, optimizing your physical appearance and building yourself up mentally and materialistically.

Women must stay sexually attractive to be desirable. Men must become socially attractive to be desirable, in a hunter/gatherer society kind of way. They don't get shit for free, but neither do we. Nor should we, in all fairness.
