So I'm not to this point yet, and it's at least a number of months away, but part of my long-term plan if my wife doesn't respond naturally to the changes I've made/am making is to try for some sort of marriage and/or sex counseling before I insist on divorce from my wife. I's like to start doing research and laying the groundwork now so that if it comes to that point I will have options completely locked down and ready to go.

My wife has the typical female emotional swings now and then but overall she's not crazy and is pretty easy to get along with, other than our very lackluster sexual relationship. She had some childhood sexual trauma (which she has always been up-front with me about) that has caused her some issues in the past, along with a very strict religious upbringing that basically conditioned her to think of sex not intended for procreation as sinful. I've seen some progress from her in overcoming both issues over the years, but that progress has been very slow and seems to have plateaued or even regressed somewhat over the past year. I recently realized that her significant hangups about sex and the sensitivities these things created in her mind around sex caused me for many years to tiptoe around these issues because early in our marriage confronting these things head-on usually resulted in tears or yelling, so I forced myself to make everything around sex as basic and inoffensive as possible in efforts to avoid "triggering" her--this was, I think, a significant factor in my overall betadom for years and years.

Anyway, I do see these things as real, legitimate obstacles to overcome; as long as she was working on them and making progress I was generally okay to be patient and try to help. She has always been very resistant to any form of counseling or therapy when I've suggested it (which is why I think it now needs to be part of my ultimatum if things go that far). The primary motivation of the therapy, from my perspective, would be to resolve her sexual issues and the resentment and frustration that I have built up around sex through the years, largely due to her issues. We don't really have significant other conflicts or problem areas (that I'm aware of).

I know that some of you have experience with counseling, so I'd appreciate any basic info or suggestions as to how I should approach this. Benefits and drawbacks of sending her alone or doing couples' counseling? Is "marriage counseling" likely to help here or should it be more targeted "sex therapy"? Any tips on what to look for in a therapist, or good resources I could use to find one? And what's the ballpark on cost?
