Back in December I matched with a ridiculously hot girl on tinder, and the conversation moved to Snapchat. After a few days of chatting we met for dinner and had a pretty standard date. I felt that it went well, conversation was steady and I was able to make her laugh a few times. I wasn't getting any immediate signals, though, so I did not escalate.

After a few more days of talking she said "Hey, I think you are really great but I am not feeling a connection here, so I would like to just be friends". At this point I was obviously disheartened, but on the other hand I could probably stand to have some friendships with women that are actually platonic. I agreed, and decided to stop flirting with her and pull back a bit.

Last week she invited me out to drink with her and a few friends. I figured that I would use the opportunity to either make a new friend group, or to see if I could actually make it happen with her. Maybe both.

The plan was to not overtly flirt with her at all, and to slightly feign disinterest. I pretty quickly brought up the fact that I was seeing someone else when she asked what was new with me, which I know is a risky move. She tried to brush it off and change the subject but I could tell from her body language that it caught her off guard, which was my signal that not all was totally lost.

For the rest of the night I made sure to engage her friends, but not totally ignore her. I'm honestly super introverted and I do not really enjoy being at the bars, but I just decided I was going to smile, laugh, and keep up with her friends' silly jokes and games. They wanted to play "what are the odds" through the night, so I just went along. Stayed off my phone, made sure to keep my drinking to moderation, and focused on getting in good with her best friend.

A few drinks in, the topic of shaving came up and she leaned in to tell me that she kept a bit of a landing strip down there, followed up with, "I hope you're okay with that." Done deal. She invited me to spend the night, and we've been seeing each other regularly for a week.

I guess the takeaway is that the "friend zone" is not necessarily the end of a pursuit. Just don't pursue relentlessly after it comes up. Convey indifference, be genuinely friendly, and wait for a signal to escalate.
