As a point of interest, I'm not sure that that is a great option. Instead, literally just talking to them like they have boyfriends is a good idea though. Not to find out if they are single. But so you can take the pressure off your own game and relax. Assume every woman has a man. There will be a correction and they should be acted on. This works more for a natural because his frame is congruent. Throwing this out as a newbie makes you seem like a creep. Forcing relationship knowledge without building rapport puts women into a logical mind which will make them question your intentions. It takes a good quick recovery to smooth it out.

I wouldn't mention her hypothetical boyfriend in conversation, but I really like the idea of assuming that she has one. Why do you need to know if she has a boyfriend beforehand?

If she rejects you, she rejects you. It doesn't matter if the reason is that she has a boyfriend, or some other reason. Girls who have boyfriends will naturally filter themselves out on their own without you checking first, because they won't go out with you.

Unless you're afraid that your game will unintentionally get so good, that girls who have boyfriends will go out with you, and you'll be totally unaware it's happening, because you didn't ask. But if a partnered girl wants to go out with you that badly, she'll lie about her boyfriend if asked anyway, so checking with her first is still useless.

Tl;dr don't look for permission to shoot your shot, just shoot your shot and let her decide.
