What I've learnt from seddit: Be this guy.

I find him endlessly perplexing as a character. I think about it every day, almost. I've known people like him in real life and they really do get laid when they act this way. I know ThrowawayPUA will say it's just fiction, but he really is an excellent portrayal of a real-life personality type. If these people stop and become like the rest of us, their results change to match as well. There are some consistent traits that make a person like this:

Self-righteousness: Hank Moody often gives other people advice on doing the right thing, especially when it comes to women. He postures as a defender of women, and sees himself as such. When he makes people angry, he doesn't see himself as the reason; he sees it either as their own problem or a simple misunderstanding.
Lack of self-control: Not only does Hank Moody indulge to his detriment, but he also has little tolerance for emotional pain, and uses whatever he can to relieve it. He doesn't see pain as something he should just bear, he immediately seeks to fix it in the most direct way possible.
Lack of introspection: Hank Moody never takes a good hard look at himself, or whether his actions match his stated feelings. This enables the self-righteousness: he never sees how absurd his position is.

In all, these can be summed up as simply lack of self-consciousness, and living in the moment. I envy the results, but I don't like the methods. I like my self-awareness and my consistency between my intentions and my actions. I don't like hypocrites, and as such, I don't want to be one myself. But it seems like the methods and results go hand-in-hand. People get laid when they are hypocritical and self-indulgent, and they don't when they are introspective and fair. This is, I suppose, why cops, preachers, and politicans all do so well.

I just started watching Californication today and it's awesome how the guy has such a great sense of entitlement and not giving a fuck.

Unfortunately he also runs a bit of "asshole game." Does that ever change or is he always that way? Obviously it comes from his self-loathing. I'm assuming that's a major plot point. No major spoilers please :)

you are right, but keep in mind this show definitely suffers a great deal from entourage syndrome, where women come on to the main character in preposterously direct ways.

there are lessons to be learned. but all with a grain of salt
