I have an Eastern European background too, thankfully my name is universal and not a name that conjures an image of a prostitute or mail order bride, in Western minds. So I've never been fetishized because of my name or anything, people only know if I tell them. When I was dating, I hid my background and only talked about it after getting to know the person. I also don't go into detail about my life with randos or acquaintances (people like classmates or coworkers for instance) so I've always avoided situations like this.

I don't have an accent, I immigrated to a western country when I was a child, so I understand that for others, it may not be possible to be ambiguous about it. I have citizenship etc but none of that matters, so don't take it personally, western men still apply the same stereotypes regardless of the reality. And they are NOT any better than Eastern European men, they are just more manipulative, please don't fall for the illusion that they are somehow better.

Really interesting because I met a Eastern European guy once who did the exact same thing to asian/south Asian women. It’s weird because he knew that Western European men do the same thing to Eastern European women, but that wasn’t enough to stop his own fetishization of what he perceives to be even more “submissive”. Apparently every woman he’s dated since adulthood has been a minority, huge red flag. I hope women aren’t fooled by him like he tried to fool me, unfortunately many women of color internalize white supremacy of any kind, eastern/western.

Sucks that happened to you. As a South Indian women living in America, I have experienced this a few times. I tried to explain this to my mom who didn’t get it, “you’re turning down successful good looking men because they like your race/color??!” Yes mother, they expect a dumb little doll who doesn’t know what feminism is.
