I did open up about my mental health. So brave, right? speaking up, defying so much toxic masculinity you guys, I talked about my problems with many people, I talked until I was blue in the face!

My family sees me as barely human. No friends call anymore. Girlfriend turned into somebody else overnight, then faded away.

I don't keep quiet about my problems because of some stupid ideas about having to be strong and silent, I keep quiet about my problems because nobody will help me. But let's have another article how men's suffering is men's fault because they won't speeak up about it, please!

  • 'When a woman appeals to people for help and protection, she is engaged in an empowering act. When men rush to a woman’s aid, it demonstrates her female potency. When her “needs” are met by others, it does not detract from but rather adds to her status. For ancient, immutable reasons, this does not apply to men. '

  • 'Most women who say men should be more emotionally open (or criticize or mock men for failing to be) seem to be operating under the assumption that certain female privileges are actually universal. It's like a rich kid who doesn't understand why poor people in a crime-ridden slum don't just move somewhere nice.'

[–]Aeponix 18 points19 points20 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I've lost so many friends and girlfriends by being too open about my feelings. When my friends realize I'm going through stuff, they're always all "yeah, share the load, get it off your chest." They don't realize that when I open that can of worms, their perception of me changes from a fun guy to the one who has all the problems.

No one wants to be around a man who isn't fun. If you drag them down by sharing, even at their request, they won't want to be around you anymore.

If you want to share your feelings as a man, do it with a therapist. Do it with someone you pay to listen to you. Your family and friends do not have the capacity to let you share your burdens and not subconsciously judge you for it.

[–]52576078 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've got to say I know what you mean, but I think you may be unlucky with your choice of friends. Most of my good male friends have always been very supportive emotionally of me, and vice versa.

[–][deleted] 155 points156 points157 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

And this is what those who argue "Men need to open up, express their pain" refuse to acknowledge. It takes more than men connecting with their feelings and opening up. You need a population willing to listen to those feelings and not dismiss them due to "Women have it worse" or "You're a white man. You'll get by." arguments. Sans such consideration, these Men won't see the point.

This is what lead me to a suicide attempt. No one wanted to help me feel better, and most people that bothered basically said man up. I ended up getting through the suicide attempt obviously and am fine now. I occasionally cry it out with a therapist because I'm not that alpha big dick gym jock. My wife knows it and says she loves that I'm sensitive which is great. Even now I use the therapist as an outlet to get things out.

[–]bcyost 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I feel like this is an underrated use for a therapist, especially for men. Even if their advice didn't help you at least it's someone to talk to about anything and get things out that won't judge you and can't tell anyone anything you've said.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Same. I was depressed, ex-gf told me I was "acting like a woman" and "being a bitch." Her abuse eventually drove me to the brink of suicide. I finally got help, but I will never ever forget that feeling.

[–]KombatWombat1 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

my Therapist told me over several weeks of going to therapy that its going to get better, and others did as well after the incident. I totally thought they were full of shit. I try to openly talk about the issue now because if i can help one person not have to deal with it, or give THEM the outlet to talk about it, then its worth it. Part of what i do for my students that i teach is give them time after school to basically shoot the shit with me.

[–]Samuel457 24 points25 points26 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am very lucky to have a friend group and church community that is ultra supportive of any help I need or any of my issues that I want to discuss. When I didn't have a group like that, it led to some serious long-term depression. I hope everyone can find friends like mine.

[–]HugoBorden 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Whining and complaining doesn't really help a man. And it may help women only because there's plenty of government aid for them.

Instead, for guys who are feeling low, it's important to find support networks with their peers in various group activities and hobbies. Or religious groups - whatever is your thing. Don't be alone, that's the hardest thing.

[–]qemist -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You're a white man. You'll get by

Not all men are white.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And what if they were?

[–]Lukeme9X 35 points36 points37 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Took me 3 or 4 years before I managed to find someone who I trusted enough to talk to about my problems, but it first took a fair bit of alcohol for me to open up to them and overcome the fear of loosing the because of telling them about my problems. Thankfully they didn't cut me off for my drunken cries for help, and I luckily now have that person to talk to, but it's really fucked up that it takes all this crap for a guy to find someone to talk to about their problems.

My female friends have vast support networks for any problems that could come up for them... and I'm happy for them, it's great that they have that, no point for any hate towards thag... just it shouldn't be so socially abnormal for a similar thing to be in place for men.

[–]Aaod 21 points22 points23 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yup no support network and then people wonder what went wrong after a man eats a gun.

[+]HugoBorden -15 points-14 points-13 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

My female friends have vast support networks for any problems that could come up for them...

Of course you realize that depression (and the use of psychiatric drugs) is far more common among women than among men? So, obviously, these “vast support networks” are not all that useful...

She'll typically get a lot more support from a good man, if she can find him, than from all her girlfriends.

[–]qemist 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Of course you realize that depression (and the use of psychiatric drugs) is far more common among women than among men?

Are you sure that isn't caused by women's greater propensity to complain? Women make greater use of public medical services yet they are no sicker than men. If you keep complaining about vague existential unease to medical professionals long enough you are quite likely to end up on anti-depressants.

[–]HugoBorden -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Are you sure that isn't caused by women's greater propensity to complain?

Maybe so but, regardless, those pharma drugs are garbage, and women consume them massively.

[–]valenin 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Of course you realize that depression (and the use of psychiatric drugs) is far more common among women than among men?

Is it? Is it really? How do you know?

Keep in mind that you're commenting on an article about men who don't express depression and other negative states because they perceive it as being at best unlikely to get them help and more likely to turn them into some degree of pariah.

Keep that in mind and tell me how you/we know depression is far more common among women.

[+]HugoBorden -7 points-6 points-5 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

how you/we know depression is far more common among women.

Women use twice as many antidepressants. Look it up.

[–]Lukeme9X 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

antidepressant prescriptions =/= number of depression cases

for example I refused antidepressants for a few reasons, one being the fact that I have ADHD and don't particularly want to be on amphetamines and antidepressants. CBT is as effective if not more than antidepressants.

Also you're forgetting the fact that to get prescribed antidepressants you must first get diagnosed with depression and many males (including myself for quite a few years) keep quiet about their mental health concerns. And even though I've spoken to a psych about my mental health concerns the only action I had taken was to do with my ADHD because I had to to get through school.

edit: fixed mobile spellings

[–]thrway_1000 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You do know that anti-depressants are just a group of drugs that are commonly used for depression and that those drugs are used to treat things from anxiety to bi-polar, but also for things like extreme body ticks to menopause. Just because they use a specific "anti-depressant" doesn't mean its treating depression.

[–]HugoBorden -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're just nitpicking now. That depression is far more common among women than among men is well demonstrated in literature. Are you disputing this?

And also I'm wondering why all the downvotes? Did I say anything weird? What I said seems just sensible and reasonable.

Perhaps it's the Big Pharma folks here who didn't like what I said. Any thoughts?

[–]Bergzz 36 points37 points38 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Women, and society in general are programmed to value strength and resolution in men. Once a bloke comes out about his problems, he has undermined his strength and resolve, along with his masculinity.

Its paradoxical that some women genuinely want men to be more emotional and open, but fail to see that they will naturally be repulsed when they do.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

You're generally right but I chose not to think that way. I am not repulsed by the men in my life who open up to me. My husband knows he can tell me anything and it doesn't change how I feel or how I see him.

In other words we can change. It's not true that it's some biological imperative that can't be overcome.

[–]l2ka 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

chose

That's the hard part, it's a conscious effort. Too many people just stumble through life and never think about, let alone choose to be different unless it's immediately beneficial. After all, why would they? If things seem fine moment to moment, their emotions just run rampant and they don't logically consider squat.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not trying to make excuses but sometimes women shut down when a man wants to unload because we're used to a certain pattern among a certain type of our female friends where once you provide a shoulder to cry on you become their therapist on demand. I've had female friends who I've had to sever relationships with because a open ear turned into me taking on their problems with the benefit to them of transferring their angst and unwillingness to fix it onto me. Men aren't really wired to do this -- one of the things I appreciate about men is they generally want to solve the problem (even if the problem is just I need to vent so I can put I behind me) versus wallowing, but this is one of those times we wrongly assume behavior xyz in women means the same thing in men.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

eh I think it's a little unreasonable to expect people to be able to overcome their natural instincts. I won't sleep with a fat chick no matter how great her personality is, and no matter how hard I try to 'overcome my biases', it just doesn't work. Im not programmed to find chubby and/or ugly girls attractive. I think this is the same thing and we like to point the finger without realizing were doing it in another way

[–]Bergzz 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree. That's why I said society in the beginning.

Similar to you, my significant other is very supportive, and I don't think it's a male female thing necessarily, moreso to do with awareness/ intelligence.

Having said that I would wager there is a biological component as well, which cuts both ways. We are after all programmed to seek certain traits from the opposite sex.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

True but we overcome other biological imperatives to fit modern society when we have to and when we are rewarded for it.

Snarking at me isn't particularly helpful to this discussion.

[–]Devilsgun 52 points53 points54 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Personal anecdote:

Had a girlfriend back in the day that was an abusive, clingy bipolar narcissist. When I would try to break off with her she'd return and threaten to call the authorities on my family for hoarding (she also used this to leverage to get me to have unprotected sex with her, as she wanted a baby something fierce, and the actual dad wasn't really that important). Every single tactic that I used to end things was a no go, but the moment I got onto antidepressants she told me that I'd never get it up again, dropped me like a hot rock and found a new guy, who gladly put a baby into her a few months later.

I came that close to "winning" but then "completely blew it" by seeking help for depression.

[–]Ultramegasaurus 49 points50 points51 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Getting rid of that hellspawn is a win though.

[–]SporkTornado 37 points38 points39 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You won big time. If you had gotten this crazy bitch pregnant. You would have been unable to get a clean break. You would either be stuck living with this horrible women. Or she would have left you and you'd be on the hook for 18 years of child support.

[–]Devilsgun 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

For sure! I've 'sealed the deal' since (got le Snip) and avoid crazy, which as you might guess cuts the dating pool down 90-95% these days

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

You dodged a major bullet there. The worse thing you can find yourself in is facing a woman who uses the fact that they're pregnant as leverage against you.

God help the new guy, though.

[–]Aeponix 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've been on a bunch of different antidepressants, never had trouble getting it up. Trouble ejaculating, yeah, but not getting it up.

You know, it's funny... (it's not at all funny).

When men have seen problems that others face, they fix them. We've developed vaccines, built roads, created lightning fast global communication networks. At no point did we make these things "men only". Men even help create things that we don't benefit from directly, like birth control and bras.

And yet somehow, somehow, after building support structures for themselves; special counseling centers, shelters, community groups... Women have the fucking nerve to stand back and say "Gosh, men should really work on doing this for themselves".

There's no help for men. No empathy, no sympathy; often times not even mercy.

Really makes me think that narcissism, or sexism, is a default trait of the average western woman.

You can try suicide as much as you like ladies, but the body count points to the real problem. And after trying to shame men by how they sit instead of addressing the obscene amount of suicides, it just goes to show the slightest woman's inconvenience is more important than the life of a man.

It's cruel. There's no other word for it.

[–]Sarthax 44 points45 points46 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is what kills me when assholes yell about "toxic masculinity" or when all suicides and mass murders are overwhelming male. It's because society created it's own demons by shutting them out, marginalizing them and their problems, telling them they are weak and worthless, and then when they snap, it's a huge shock and everyone rushes to blame videogames or something.

Society needs to take a hard long look at how it treats men and mental health issues if it really wants to overcome these problems. Not just banning guns and videogames as if that will eliminate the root causes.

[–]MadeSomewhereElse 24 points25 points26 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

A man meets a stranger and thinks "how can I help this person?".

A woman meets a stranger and thinks "how can this person help me?".

Edit: paraphrased from someone, but I don't remember whom.

[–]MRA-automatron-2kb 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Chris Rocks said (paraphrased)

When a man has a problem he thinks about how to go about solving it.

When a woman, has a problem she think about who to ask to solve it for her.

Since I heard this, I see it all the time.

[–]andybev01 21 points22 points23 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"..narcissism, or sexism, is a default trait of the average western woman."

This.

[–]MRA-automatron-2kb 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So true. I often think of all the building and maintenance do in our cities to create comfort for women like water, electricity, housing and all women do is crap on men.

I like your second point at how women built emotional support structures only for themselves.

[–]Mens-Advocate 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This!!!!!!!

Every major bridge or skyscraper is constructed at the price of one or more male deaths.

Even a simple pavement is at the price of men's injury by hot asphalt or men's joints destroyed by jackhammers.

The energy sources have mostly men running platforms above freezing, deadly waters, or losing limb and life underground.

Every building, every floor, every lamp-post, most transport maintenance - all male effort and injury.

And then feminism inverts reality by insisting women oppressed.

[–]MRA-automatron-2kb 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I've been thinking this for the past few months about how everything is built by men but the guy above took it further by saying men built all the city infrastructure for everyone (male and female) but as for social services and counseling and support groups, it's set up for women and I add how women shut down male clubs where men could get some support.

Men are not sexist like women accuse men of being but the women are the sexist ones.

[–]Mens-Advocate 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Occasionally, bright, independently-thinking women recognise this, as the Paglia-Sommers conversation praising men's constructive productivity.

And, of course, Paglia's most famous quotation:

"If civilization had been left in female hands, we would still be living in grass huts."

Oh, we benefit from birth control.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Don't fall into this idea that women are responsible for these problems. Women (and men too) are often unaware of problems like this. I was unaware before I came to this sub because the victims are silenced. The main problems with the shelters stem from the radical feminist groups who create them and destroy men's shelters. These people do not represent the majority of women. Remember, don't attribute to malice what can be explained by ignorance.

[–]Clockw0rk -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

When the mainstream media echoes the sentiments that men are bad and men have to fix themselves, we're no longer dealing with a 'tiny radical movement'.

We are your sons and brothers, we are your fathers and husbands, and you let us suffer. Worse, you do little to protect us from those who seek to destroy us. See how many women suddenly cared about the draft when they found they would have to enlist. If your calls for change happened only after you were affected, your selfishness has been exposed.

At some point, the bystanders that did nothing share the blame when they had the resources and tools to help but didn't. And yes, by that reasoning, the US government is responsible for our homeless population because they allow it to persist. Not solely responsible, but certainly an accomplice due to inaction.

[–]IVIaskerade -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

but certainly an accomplice due to inaction.

Once again, they can't be blamed if they didn't know.

Was in an on/off relationship through the middle years of college. Became always a fight, agonizing for the both of us. (Great relationship for 9 months, agonizing for an extra 3)

When I opened up about an outcast/alienated depression that began lurking, we finally broke up for good within a week. (her end). Past that, we havent spoken a word to each other in 5 years despite being amongst a loosely coupled group of friends. Sad, but it had to happen

The above/OP topic is sadly true. Opening up as a man in today's world will do this.

Your boys will tell you to shake it off. Any females will start distancing, and you'll purify your list of friends mighty quick.

All in all, it can be a renewing experience. It sets the stage for you to give a "Fuck you, you werent there when I went through the worst of it" mental-finger to juuuust about everyone you previously thought you could count on opening up to.

It's a renewing experience, you can start from the ground up after rebounding.

I cant say any of this without mentioning: guys, this is naturally a depressing topic. If youre going through the thick of shit and see it lasting longer than three weeks: get help. Life is TOO SHORT to be downtrodden and wasting it away in a morose decay.

Chances are, people just dont care. Theyre lazy mouthbreathers. You have JUST as much of a right to ignore them. Even moreso if they're negatively influencing you.

[–]equiposeur 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Feminists tell me they should express their feelings, but then respond with "men's tear" or "masculinity so fragile" . . . unless the feeling expressed in the one, single feminist-approved feeling a man can have, which is guilt for being so horrible.

[–]MRA-automatron-2kb 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women can express as much as they want the widest range of emotions but they then control what and when a man can express.

Control, control, control.

Did you guys see the sidebar of the "menslib" subreddit?

They are explicitly pro-feminist, and ban all discussion of legal parental surrender.

Their top posts are about support for women's issues and various gender-bending boosterism.

[–]baserace 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They're not even explicitly 'pro'-feminist, they ARE a feminist sub.

Even a broken clock and all that...

[–]stemgang 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, actually I was pretty surprised to see the slightest hint of sympathy for men's suffering among feminists.

It is more common to hear them reinforcing gender roles with demands to "man up" or shaming language.

[–]Lemonade1947 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I have multiple problems. This is so painfully true.. Talking about my issues doesn't help. Not a bit.

[–]stringdom 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It can help. But it has to be to the right crowd. If you talk about your issues with someone who devalues you in proportion to how many problems you have and disregard them as non-important issues, then it will hurt you rather than help. But if you talk with someone supportive, reaffirming and respectful, then you can clear a lot of rubbish off your mind and actually feel better and make better decisions.

For me it has to be objective based, tangible, analytical - talking about things emotionally doesn't feel like it's helping anything. Speaking analytically, objectively - that feels like it helps.

Thats true. I have a couple of friends i can say anything too but if i tell anyone who isnt one of those two friends or my mother, those people act differently around me.

Never tell women your problems. They act like they care but they dont even if they try too. They just see you as a weak man.

[–]equiposeur 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't keep quiet about my problems because of some stupid ideas about having to be strong and silent, I keep quiet about my problems because nobody will help me. But let's have another article how men's suffering is men's fault because they won't speeak up about it, please!

Oh my God, fuck yes!

[–]CandersonNYC 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's a vast difference between embracing models that praise the idea of getting men to talk about being "victims" and ones that recognize all people to acknowledge that we can experience trauma and abuse no matter our gender, and all people who experience trauma and abuse are greatly served by responses that are empowering and supportive.

Wow, I thought MensLib was just a feminist shithole. Looks like they make some good points though.

[–]rottingchrist 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is still a feminist shithole. Sometimes a bit of sense emerges from the posters but it's either ignored, deleted or shouted down.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

But they're not open to critique of feminist theory and believe it's still useful for men when, as we've seen and heard out there, is not the case.

I've been temp banned there twice for arguing that demonizing masculine traits under the umbrella term "Toxic Masculinity" seems like a backwards way of trying to help. When I asked the mods about it a couple of them straight up started trolling me. It was a clown show.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And I even posted a variation of my argument over there and am getting reamed by the Mod for not staying on topic.

When they ban me (and I'm sure they will), I'll post the exchange just to give you a look into the kind of mind running that place.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well guys, I haven't been banned. But that doesn't change the fact they prefer to look the other way in regards to certain issues. Here's my little exchange with BigAngryDinosaur:

Me: Hate to burst your bubble, but this article and many others of their kind miss a great elephant in the room: Men's Issues (whether it be mental health or other) as a welcome discussion in the public sphere.

For as much as you and Prince Harry want men to speak out, express their feelings, if all men are going to get for their troubles is "Women have it worse." and "White men like you still benefit. Quit whining." then can you honestly continue to act surprised when they refuse?

Men need a populace willing to LISTEN to their problems without dismissing them, measuring them in contrast with the problems women have. Sans that vital component of support, why bother? If you were a man struggling, would you want to receive the dismissals I outlined above constantly? That is, IF you miraculously manage to avoid killing yourself out of helplessness and desperation afterwards.

There can be NO help for Men's Mental Health so long as their issues continue to get buried alive by "Women have it worse."

Bigangrydinosaur: I haven't seen anywhere in this article, in the OP's post or anywhere else around here anyone saying that "women have it worse" and there is no productive value in injecting that sentiment into a discussion that aims to do exactly what we would all like, which is open, honest discussion about mental health issues. Lets stay on topic.

Me: I'm talking about SOCIETY. Not in here.

And this is perfectly on topic. Unless you deny that the "Women have it worse" narrative plays a part in the stigma when it comes to men seeking help? Because if you want to have an open, honest discussion, you're going to have to confront that narrative in addition to other ones. Your choice: Play the same old song and dance or truly get to one of the many roots of the problem.

BigAngryDinosaur: If this is an issue that you've faced, I'm sure there are more constructive ways to talk about how to overcome societal pressures from anyone or any groups of people than to make readers and subscribers feel like they cannot hope to win against an oppressive establishment of women. We will not allow a discussion to go off on tangents about which gender is being unfair to who, we want constructive discussions, not victimization or blame.

Me: I'm not talking about an oppressive establishment of women. Please don't put words in my mouth. I'm talking about a narrative that's being peddled out there where women have it worse. I am not against women's issues. Don't try to paint me as such.

And yes, it's been my issue. When you've been constantly told all your life that your struggles are nothing compared to women, that you should quit complaining as a white man because you have it better, that women and girls are incapable of harming others, by the very institutions and movements (hint, hint) who supposedly CARE, you can't expect me to sit down and NOT feel helpless and alone. Crying at night if I think about it too much. Particularly as someone whose suffered some pretty serious abuse from the opposite sex in his past where, for some reason, this culture is still reluctant to address unless boys were the ones that did all the harm alone.

There, is that better? I tied it in to mental health for you.

BigAngryDinosaur: I'm sorry you've gone through abuse, and I don't mean to diminish what has happened to you in any way. However it is a personal story and I'm quite sure not representative of the same struggles that a majority of men have faced, and it goes against the spirit of the sub to make broad generalizations and lay sole blame for problems on anyone, any group, gender or demographic.

We are all aware that there are closed-minded people who have inflicted pain on others, both men and women. However this sub seeks to bring light to the pain that many men experience without drawing further lines between the genders or laying blame. This is how we make people take these issues seriously and be heard. The matter is not up for further debate in this thread, it is our mission to keep conversations on topic and productive towards our goals.

Translation: I'm sticking my fingers in my ears and going "Lah, Lah, Lah, Lah!"

Feast your eyes, everyone. The replies say it all.

I'm quite sure not representative of the same struggles that a majority of men have faced, and it goes against the spirit of the sub to make broad generalizations and lay sole blame for problems on anyone, any group, gender or demographic.

Yet they consistently blame all men for things like rape, violence in the world, wars, etc. What a joke.

I've been lurking there too and benefit from some of their posts.

This sub has a more garrulous quality and I find they have a bit more of a space for tenderness.

Yeah well it is hard "being for the development and well-being of men" and being a women-firster at the same time.

Men should only open up to other men - society at large - especially the matriarchy doesnt care nor wants to.

Women are trained to look for weakness - and to either cull males or exploit them when it becomes visible as otherwise it would have been bad for survival of her offspring. When a woman say they want men to open and be emotional - its a pure shit test that they want to see if you pass.

In essence

  • men can empathize because they know what you are going through
  • women capitalize because they know what you are no longer capable of doing

[–]matrix2002 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Damn, this is so true.

I got the message loud and clear when I was younger.

The irony is now that I am a little older, I have just as many problems, if not more serious ones, but I don't need to talk to anyone about them.

The only thing I need is every now and then to say: "Man, this is hard sometimes. I am trying, but it's hard" and have someone say, "Yeah, it's tough. I hear ya."

That's it. Learning to deal with my problems on my own and learning how to not let my problems and frustrations lead to poor decisions, is the best thing to happen to me.

When you know you can handle your own failures internally, then, generally, you don't worry about your problems as much.

Jesus man! I'm seriously glad you made it through that and to a better place-- What a fucking accomplishment! I only have respect for that

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women have a massive support network even for made up problems or potential problems whereas men do not. This is not something that can be fixed, there simply isn't much compassion available for men. What MRA's (or just men in general) need to realize is that feminism did not create the modern western woman, it just enabled them to act in their nature without shame.

TRUTH

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be honest I think it should be that way, but for women too. I won't GAF about your problems and you don't have to GAF about mine. I can really see why someguys would start hating women over shit like this. Men are willing to risk their lives to stop someone attack a woman but at the same time they buy into the whole "victim" complex even though they are the most privileged gender imaginable.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Open up by all means, but with other men only in a non-judgmental way.

Check on Meet-Up for men's groups, one of the best things for my mental health and happiness I have ever done!

This is the best example of of how men are supposed to act in the western world.

Iit's such a shame /r/menslibs. The quality of the discussion there is amazing. Much better then here. I have to go to /r/FeMRADebates to get the same level of discussion even though the sub has censorship problems or /r/PurplePillDebate . It's just so unfortunate that they are unwilling to place any of the blame on crybull movement or on women in general.

[–]eixan 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

The reason why that is is because of Neotony. Neotony makes us care for women's problems more. That combined with the fact that men have vastly higher sex drives have vastly higher sex drives with only 24% of the visitors of pornhub being female You might note that as the article points out the majority of women visiting the site are lesbians which many people would agrue discredits the study. However it makes sense that the majority of women who would otherwise be interested in viewing porn would watch the stuff that's already catered to strait men.

So just women's bodies and appearance makes alone makes them far more valuable to soeciety

It's why men who treat women the same as they treat other men, without benevolent sexism/female privilege, are seen as overwhelmingly sexist by both men and women

Men hide their feelings because it's none if your fucking business.

[–]Pantsyr 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We're also conditioned to deal with 'it' on our own. And as per the OP and many others - opening up is often a negative outcome. Personally I need only one or two people I can actually 'talk' to in my life - the rest are just 'fluff' and I'd not say a word of what was bothering me to them.

A gross exaggeration, but not entirely untrue.
