I think the people who changed their minds here are mostly lurkers and it's a process that happens over time.

Lurkers don't need to engage with ego-protection of their ideas since they're not sharing them here.

People do change their minds but it is usually in a more subtle way. Like instead of changing their view on their main point they might realize more about the struggles of the other gender and change their mind from they have it so easy to maybe they do have it a little harder than I initially thought.

In fact people change their minds due to PPD posts all the time.

It’s just that the active participants in a thread rarely do so.

Participating causes you to become invested in your view, making you unlikely to change it. That’s true of PPD as it’s true of anywhere.

The people learning new things and changing their minds are, 99% of the time, the people who are lurking that thread and so not invested, and so ready to change their mind.

You see this all the time. Not comments that say “this thread changed my mind” but comments a day or a week later saying... “I’ve been thinking about that other thread and Id like to say.....”

That person almost certainly had part of his mind changed by the previous thread.

I think you may not have much experience dealing with people because people never change their minds. They only discover that (the opposite view) is what they believed all along.

I don't think most people do a 180 when it comes to their opinions (and really that's probably a good thing - those who do often seem to go through an identity crisis and go waaay overboard like a certain subset on R/atheism and TRP)

However I do think that moderate change over time does happen but again, for the sake of one's own identity, it gets rationalized as “expanding“ your existing view or “growing“ as a person, so noone has to admit they were wrong before.

Though maybe the more important factor on here isn't changing anyone's mind on the issues discussed , it's acknowledging that different people have different opinions/ world views/ experiences and they can still be valid to them because they live different lives (Different locations, socioeconomic backgrounds, personalities, social cycles, etc.)

I find that very few of the people who have been here for a while will outright believe someone is lying if their personal experience doens't align with their views, while it is much more common among new contributors.

There is usually no convincing others to change their opinions because they mostly come from self interest in some way.

However discussions here can help people identify the roots of our differences and what our core values are. Knowing these things about people you disagree with is useful for dealing with them.

Because it's not about pursuading the other people you debate. It's about understanding your own and others opinions better, considering new things and persuading people reading who aren't sure of their opinion yet. I was persuaded by the sub to go from blue to purple with a bit of red. But right now I won't ever get persuaded to go blue, but I may be somewhat persuaded on specific topics or improve my opinions to be more fair . The persuation that does happen happens slowly and is usually more subtle than going to the other side.

It's also just to shit on people and have fun :D

No one is going to change their mind outright over the course of a couple of hours arguing on Reddit. But given enough time, combined with life experiences (which some people don't actually have), people may at least reconsider their opinions and maybe mellow out after a while. I certainly have.

I believe people are moved by arguments, some more than others, Whtknight for example, he entered here as a complete blue pill and each day he is moving redder and redder.

After all, even being away from the Sexual market for some years, he still have his memories and can relate to TRP aspects becauseof said memories, If we talk about younger people, I would say it would be even easier to change minds.

The only ones i do believe that did not change after conversation are extreme ideologs. Or in other words, People whose entire ego is sustained by a certain belief or group, Like some extreme feminists, leftists, racists and religious people.

You need to get away from ideologs if you want to find people who can change their minds, my friend.

I can C your V. People NEVER change their mind IMEDIATELY. But tons of people here will have take aways and edit their views after mulling over new inputs and new information. No one will ever SAY, my V had been C'd. But guarantee minds are changed quite often just slowly and we don't notice it / it's not reported.

Personally, I like to hear “red pill” ideas expressed in ways that aren’t the slang of bitter incels who LARP about their harems.

I’m not naive, but I think men can understand female perspectives in a way that the “red pill” community ignores to their own detriment.

There is validity to “red pill” ideas, but it’s explained on this forum in a manner that isn’t so bitter and judgmental.

If I had to pick, CMVs are my least favorite type of thread, as a mod, for exactly what you describe. We all know most OPs won’t leave with their mind changed, but lately it’s like almost no one even bothers to politely pretend there’s a chance they would. It’s bad faith all the way down, really just an opportunity to put on a display of how stubborn and set in ones ways they are.

And that’s what gets through. Y’all see this shit? The purge week posts so far? The low effort shitposting? That stuff gets submitted every day of the year. Thankfully nowhere near as much (seriously purge week participation so far is way higher than last year, good job you lovable garbage people) but the level of content quality is spot on.

Back in my day a CMV was a genuine opportunity to think of something you feel strongly about, but maybe something you know is controversial or complicated, maybe lots or even most people are on the other side, and even though you genuinely feel the way you currently do, you think there has to be an argument, right? If it’s that divisive? So you offer yourself up to hear them out, with the understanding that you’re open to having your view changed and you’re not wasting their time typing something out for you.

The number of times I’ve asked OPs the simple question of “Is there anything that could actually change your view on this?” (after already seeing thread after thread of defensive stubbornness) and they’ve straight up said no or probably not is high. Then they think it’s some kind of conspiracy when their post gets removed. CMV stands for change my view, not I will attack you if you challenge my deeply held belief that I have no plan of ever changing.
