Maybe I'm missing something but it is different. Nobody (is supposed) to get married for money and benefits, but love and wanting to spend time with that person. It's a devotion to them for the rest of your life because you care about them so much that you want them to be an integral part of your life. Yes it is a big financial decision but if that's such a big deal then get a prenup.

Don't discuss it. When they bring up marriage its time to dump them if you don't reciprocate their feelings.
I just got a rambling pm from a woman that was rife with spelling and grammar errors. There is no reason for me to debate her. I laughed and moved on.

Hysterical. However, she won't get it. Women function on solipsism and because marriage is such a great deal for them they are incapable of understanding how it is not also a great deal for men.
Then, after you explain it to her, she will just get pissed that you mocked her and it will be all yelling, feelz, and womyn tears.

Glad it did, and am seriously hoping you are trolling this subreddit.
EDIT: OK, I can tell you're not. So here's some free advice: people are people, and many of them are socially pressured into certain behaviors, appearances, etc. I know I am, if only slightly. You might want to take into consideration that a lot of women, for example, wear makeup because everyone fucking else does, and if they don't they are not secure enough with themselves to go without. However, just are there are men who don't dress a certain way or act a certain way to fit in, there are women who don't do those things either. It sounds like you need to go places where you can meet women like that. I suggest coffee places, school, heck, even stores. I do not suggest bars.

Jesus christ. I leave for 12 hours and this post has 93 replies!
Her first reply: Well if you're interested in working with them maybe you should try negotiating a better deal. What kind of perks are they offering?
My response: Well it says something about a personal prostitute but she only works when she feels like it and every guy at the company that I've talked to says the longer you work there the more seldom she shows up to work.
Our conversation went on from there and I'm not going to post the entire back and forth. I told her I can see myself spending my life "working at the company" but the contract itself actually poisons things because it makes me feel like there is an ulterior motive. Long story short, she is aware that I do not intend to marry her (or anyone else) and is fine with that.
At no point did she take offence or get angry. She understands that the whole thing is a metaphor and is intended to be humorous. After reading the replies, it seems to me a lot of you are overly cynical, and frankly pretty sexist as well (news flash - not all women are the solipsistic idiots some of you make them out to be). It seems to me many of you simply choose bad women. Maybe look for kind, intelligent women (who have a sense of humor) instead of just trying to bag the most physically attractive woman you that will talk to you.
Anyway, I met up with her and some friends, we had some drinks, came back to my apartment, had amazing sex, she made us sandwiches, and then we played with my Arduino together.
I love this woman. :)

I totally agree with your assessment about chasing intelligent chicks, but realize that these guys are competing with people like you and me with half the SMV assets. Cut them some slack.
I'm attractive, fairly well off and have the same mentality as you, but I've still run into problems with women due to not being sufficiently alpha in the past.

My friend just got married to a Korean girl. Full wedding with family friends. But they still haven't turned in the paperwork to the government. He thinks this will allow him an out if it doesn't work.
Little does he know she could probably sue him and win half his assets still. Lots of precedent these days with "a relationship imitating marriage" actually counting as one.

[–]goatfishsandwich10 points11 points12 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
In our legal system, even pre-nups can get thrown out now.
[–]GuideGhost6 points 12 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
I've been wondering about this. Supposedly the reason a pre-nup can get thrown out is if it can be proven that she was "pressured" into signing it against her will, or something silly like that. Couldn't you include a clause that eliminates that possibility?
IANAL, but something like "The signer hereby agrees that they are signing this completely on their own will."
[–]mraowbot 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, but not by something in the contract itself. But rather:
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Honestly, you have absolutely no incentive to get married. Don't let her twist your arm by threatening to abandon you. If she is so callous as to do something like that, why the fuck would you want to spend the rest of your life with her?
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Let me just add that if it's all just a formality for her, then she won't hesitate at all to agree to a prenup.
[–]ModAerobus 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Also want to add something. If she genuinely cares about your happiness she should have no problem signing a pre-nup that clearly favors you (as protection because the law and courts are skewed in favor of women). If she insists on getting married, she should trust you. If she doesn't, then you should not be getting married.
[–]Red_Zepperin 22 points23 points24 points 12 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link
This is unnecessarily antagonistic.
If someone wrote this to me I would take immense offense to being compared to something as impersonal and replaceable as a corporation. If you don't want to get married, then fine. She can't force you to against your will. But going out of your way to make this joke/point just seems childish and rude.
[–]mypasswordismud[🍰] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
It seems by your up-vote/down-vote ratio that you've kind of struck onto something. Would you care to elaborate? I'll be honest, I'm one of the people that down-voted you, but I'm curious as to where you're coming from, maybe I didn't understand your point...?
I'll explain my reasoning, I down-voted you because of the use of "immense offense." I don't understand why it would be immense, or even an offense. This is because I see the corporation thing as just an analogy, like all the car analogies that get thrown around, nobody takes offense at being compared to a car for example. Anyways, the analogy isn't even about his GF personally, it's about marriage contracts in general. The kind of contract he describes is the same no matter who he gets married to actually. That's how marriage works in our society regardless of the parties. I think if anybody has a "right" to be offended it's really both parties, because marriage has become so dangerous that a lot of men just can't rationally commit to something that takes all the power away from them to have agency over their own lives, and has the potential to completely, and possibly irrecoverably destroy them in every spectrum of their lives.
In my opinion women, out of respect and love for their special someone, and for humanity in general, should be fighting to make marriage laws more equitable, so that it's not such a potentially dangerous and dehumanizing affair for their lovers, their sons and brothers.
[–]Red_Zepperin -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
This is because I see the corporation thing as just an analogy, like all the car analogies that get thrown around, nobody takes offense at being compared to a car for example
I'd disagree. Analogies depend on the context. Marriage is a contract, yes, but it's supposed to be more than that (hopefully). It's (supposedly) based around mutual love. Comparing it to a job - something stressful, strenuous, and dreaded - is about as insulting as it can get.
The kind of contract he describes is the same no matter who he gets married to actually.
That line of thinking dehumanizes the woman. It turns her into a passive object, again something for offense. Understand that from her perspective marriage is also a unique testament to their particular love. It's a hugely symbolic, validating event - that's why little girls plan out dream weddings their entire lives. Reducing her to economic terms is not going to flatter her.
[–]fiat_lux_ 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
Mutual love and trust and all that other metaphysical stuff can exist without a marriage. It's mainly there as social contract and social validation.
But I agree that it would insult a lot of people, regardless of how irrational that may be.
I disagree with the sentiment that a job must necessarily be stressful, strenuous, and dreaded though. You may hate your job, but I enjoy mine, and I enjoy the company of my coworkers. I am grateful to have a job and feel busy.
Similar to how you may question the OP's attitude towards relationships, I find your own attitude towards work questionable.
Here is where your double-standards are showing. Why just little girls? Who says little boys don't day dream about their perfect relationship? They are told the same stories about saving pure princesses that they save from evil villains (and live happily ever after) their entire lives. A lot of boys grow up naturally wanting to feel useful and treating a princess right.
This illusion got shattered along the way during growth, and bad experiences or rational thought have taught them to lose faith or trust in marriage. That the woman would keep pestering the guy to be married shows some level of self-centeredness and lack of concern for the man's own experiences and feelings. The OP made it clear and explained he didn't want to get married before hand. It's clear she didn't care enough about his concerns even before he sent the text.
Ignoring the man's feelings is not going to make him trust her any more.
If she doesn't like it, she can always leave him and go elsewhere. She has self-agency.
[–]Red_Zepperin -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I don't disagree with you, but most of society has a different outlook. For most, marriage is the ultimate culmination of those feelings.
I disagree with the sentiment that a job must necessarily be stressful, strenuous, and dreaded though.
I didn't say necessarily. But the typical narrative is that work is work, it can be taxing. Most people work out of necessity and are not in ideal situations. It doesn't translate as a romantic metaphor very well.
Why just little girls? Who says little boys don't day dream about their perfect relationship?
I didn't say anything about little boys and what they dream of. And I don't see how pointing out that "A lot of boys grow up naturally wanting to feel useful and treating a princess right" has anything to do with the offensiveness of his text. I'm simply explaining the other perspective.
The OP made it clear and explained he didn't want to get married before hand.
Yes, and I'm saying he should have stopped there or maintained that. The text was classless and juvenile. Just because his partner may stoop to that level doesn't mean he should.
[–]fiat_lux_ 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
"Comparing it to a job - something stressful, strenuous, and dreaded - is about as insulting as it can get."
You didn't say it was something that can be that way, you just said that a job is something that is "stressful, strenuous, and dreaded". I simply took what you explicitly wrote.
From my point of view, I love my work. It pays great. I get a lot of power over people around me and off shore. I get social validation (I feel useful and important to society). I feel guilty, silly, and beholden to society for those feelings too, much like an introspective girl might for needing marriage for her own social validation needs.
I know many guys without work, and it's the most depressing experience for them. It's not like they even needed to work. They could live on fine in their parents' home. They had internet, food, and shelter all provided. Clearly work wasn't a physical necessity for them.
Being without work has driven many people to the edge of suicide (including myself).
The OP had to mention the job offer he's expecting, and it's fair to say he might even enjoy the fact that he has a job even if he dislikes the hard work associated to it, just as much as a guy might enjoy being married but still dislike the social contract and possible risks associated to it.
It doesn't have to be romantic; partially because a lot of people don't consider marriage itself to be romantic anymore.
I'm simply explaining the other perspective.
And I'm explaining why the OP had every right to feel just as offended as his gf might have from their discussions. She was showing little to no respect or understanding towards his concerns. The text came after discussions/explanations had taken place.
Well, to be fair to you, I probably wouldn't have bothered with a text either. It does sound like he wrote that analogy to ridicule her position... but you know what? That's just what we are assuming. That's what I would have assumed when I was a much whinier, judgmental person.
Our perceptions of others' thoughts and attitudes are unreliable. It's actual witnessed actions/behaviours that are reliable.
For all we know, he was relatively respectful otherwise and just trying to get her to finally understand his position. Analogies/simplifications are a decent way to bridge gaps in understanding.
[–]Red_Zepperin -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
If you're trying to be pedantic for the sake of it, then kudos. But the the validity of the assertion doesn't affect the fact that in common context that's the way work is viewed. Your case may be different. Regardless, OP's context was that of relating marriage with unfavorable job with ridiculous terms - something wholly negative. Seeing why a woman could take offense to that is easily understandable.
I agree with that assertion, but in this case I think the observable behavior and information given makes OP look like an ass.
[–]fiat_lux_ -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I wasn't just trying to be pedantic. A job is actually a pretty big deal and a huge source of social validation for men, as silly and unnecessary as it may seem to others.
I consider it pretty darned good analogy. You say that most people get a job only out of necessity; however, clearly not everyone gets one for physical necessity. Many people today in Western societies can live without a job. Many can even live with their parents and have internet/entertainment, food, and shelter provided for.
And yet so many people still feel depressed enough about being jobless (some even commit suicide).
It can be a spiritual/mental/social necessity every bit as much as marriage could be a spiritual/mental/social necessity for others.
Not sure why the OP's context (unfavourable job) works in your favour at all. It only shows that the OP sees marriage, as it currently defined legally, as having heavily unfavourable terms. Wasn't that the whole point of the analogy?
It's possible for marriage to have favourable terms for men (just as it's possible for various jobs to have favourable terms), but from OP's perspective it clearly doesn't as it is defined in his country right now.
Perhaps. If I was going to actually judge, I'd also criticize his GF for being inconsiderate or self-centered.
[–]Bobwayne17 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Why would you make a career out of a job you hate that much? I understand your point, but the contract analogy in my opinion is valid and well written.
There's nothing "immensely offensive" in it. Marriage is a contract that when a woman brings it up, and doesn't understand why you wouldn't want to do it, this is a good response. She probably still most likely will ignore the facts and let emotions take control, but OP did something good IMO.
He already said he didn't want to get married. How would you get the woman to see all the negatives that you see without something like this?
[–]ModAerobus 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I disagree, and here's why. Most women, when they bring up the idea of marriage to men, they are expecting the man to reciprocate their feelings (whether they realize it consciously or not). The norm is that when a man feels comfortable with marriage, he'll propose to the girlfriend. However, when a girl brings it up, more often than not she thinks that she needs to be the one to make the first move. Then, because of hamstering, they feel that the man will reciprocate.
The majority of women--feminists and moderates (or, all of the nonRPwomen)--legitimately do not understand that marriage is not worth it for most men. They are too egocentric when they suggest marriage to even consider the man's perspective. So by shaming her with this text, OP accomplishes two things: 1) He communicates clearly that marriage is not worth it for him and 2)He puts her in her place and out of anger and shame forces her to realize that she did not consider his feelings.
And, honestly, I think sending this text is way more effective than simply stating points 1 and 2 mentioned above. Why? Because women are emotional. And the text directly evokes emotion in them, while simply stating the points in a logical and rational manner (which most men would do) will have no effect on her.
[+]Red_Zepperin -6 points-5 points-4 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Shaming and degrading someone is pathetic and weak. It's subversive in the most cowardly way. It's the anti-thesis of masculinity.
OP could have explained his position, as lacking in subtlety as it was, without passive aggressively trying to needle his girl.
[–]TRP Vanguard: "Dark Triad Expert"IllimitableMan 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Machiavellianism is not anti-masculine despite its roots in the feminine play-kit. Such manipulation is fair game.
[–]ModAerobus -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
My point is that although is the logical and appropriate thing to do, it will have no effect on women because they are not logical and rational. They are emotional by nature, and sending the text would affect their emotions directly, causing it to have more of an effect on her.
[–]Red_Zepperin 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I assert that one shouldn't be overly concerned with their reaction, so long as they've cleared their own conscience. She can react however she wants and he can determine for himself if he'll continue to tolerate her behavior.
[–]ModAerobus -4 points-3 points-2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I disagree. Her reaction indicates to him whether she is a marriageable partner to begin with or not. However, in this particular case it doesn't apply.

How different is marriage for a man in America compared with the UK. Do we get shafted more or less?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Man...I did not get this for the longest time. I was thinking why would anyone take this contract. And then it clicked, haha

but they don't pay dividends
Metaphor disintegrates here because babies.
Kids usually pay dividends sooner or later, if only the pleasure of having someone to share a meal with when everyone else has wandered off. Girlfriends in particular have a way of not being around for quite as long as wives, and not making as many babies. Even ex wives stick around for longer than a girlfriend ever will.
Part of the metaphor was good, but you're just not accepting that women know their company is worth more than you can possibly pay for it, plus babies. Maybe that particular woman is not worth so much to you, but she's a fair deal for someone out there.
If you don't want kids and you're cool with being one of those old guys who debates other old guys at the park, and eats alone at the diner, more power to you. I'm terrified of being that guy, but I also don't make six figures.
[–]crazy_idea_express[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think this is a good point. I do plan on having children and I think its worthwhile. To me, having children with someone is the "real" marriage and I intend to love and support the mother of my children for the rest of our lives. The contractual marriage just seems like a lopsided scam to me, particularly when one party is bringing so much more to the table financially. I simply don't understand why I would do it. Luckily, my girlfriend has a sense of humor and understands my concerns.
Frankly, I think it is deplorable that you "blue pillers" are so quick to judge me simply because I dare to think for myself instead of doing something irrational just because its a cultural norm.

Deleted? Try again OP
A bit of backstory: - got a job offer from a company, been waiting for them to email me with the details of the offer - been talking about marriage with the gf (specifically, me explaining why I don't want to get married)
so I sent her this text...
[Company] sent the offer. I would be getting a $1 per year salary, they would get full use of my existing company and personal asets, and if I quit or they fire me or lay me off, I would owe them half my assets and about $200,000 per year in perpetuity. They are including some shares in the deal, but they don't pay dividends, I can never sell them, and they're non-voting shares (the management insists they are way too independent for that). Should I take it? They say if I really wanted to work with them I would accept the offer. They are pretty great, but I don't know... I kind of like things the way they are.
What's worse is they insist this contract is just a formality and all they really want is for me to hang out at the office with them, but any time I bring up my scepticism about the contract they get distant and upset...

1 of 3 responses is sure to follow:
You don't love me.
I feel sorry for you, crazy_idea_express, because marriage is about love and trust, and you are incapable of either.
Life isn't a business transaction, OP
Edit: To be completely fair though, she might understand it. My gf and I have had the "marriage" talk (which BTW if you must have, have it in person face to face, helps you keep frame and reassure her.) She has a shit ton of wealth in her family and some of it will inevitably be willed to her. And I made the point that if we divorce, under our state law if the money is passed to her while we are together, I will be enjoying 1/2 of the money her dad worked his butt off to leave for her. She understood pretty quick when it was her own nest egg. I showed her articles (rare as they may be) of scumbag male divorcees striking the lotto by divorcing rich women, and she was like "WHAT THE FUCK THIS IS POSSIBLE? OH MY GOD THAT IS SO WRONG, FUCK SOCIETY!" She still gets marriage tingles pretty frequently, but she logically at least understands not to bug me about it.
So yeah. Women will understand it if you make it purely about them. Which is not news to anyone on this sub. They cannot understand the male plight that is marriage, but if you paint a vivid picture of a hypothetical female plight, different story.

Or, you know, you could just tell her you don't want to marry her instead of resorting to smart-ass text messages like this? If it's a deal breaker, then it's a deal breaker. I don't see where the problem is.

The vast majority of redpillers problems could be solved by stop having "girlfriends" at all. Stop all dating and end all relationships. If sex is desired, it should be obtained through prostitution.
[–]moschles 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
To be honest, I'm willing to take shit from women, to deal with their tantrums, to have the "marriage talk", for the price of passion and intimacy.
Every young punk thinks he is going to do this. None survive. Continue doing your "passion and intimacy" and come back to me in 15 years. You will have a couple kids hanging off you.
Time will run out on the little 'party' mentality you have about life. Then you will be sucked into the lives of women (not these little girls you date) but women, who are either on a career path or who are seriously planning to settle down and start a family. If you fence-sit on this issue, you will be converted into a daddy.

I'll stick with the 22 year old college students thanks.
This is not the first time I've heard this. Where do you guys find these college students who are not on a 'career track' and who are not looking for a husband?
