I do not agree with this, BUT

This really complicates things. When someone gets as close to your face as possible, like an inch from your face, yelling as loud as they can, at what point is that assault? I mean, you can't just start walking backwards because you don't know where you're going, you can't turn around because your shoulder might hit them - you are basically stuck. I wouldn't be surprised if people felt the need to defend themselves in a situation like this.

Welp, this guy just got an arrest record for domestic violence, and being a giant, intimidating looking guy won't help. Whenever he tries to apply for another job, this will follow him even though he was the one who kept his cool.

Assault occurs when a person has a reasonable fear of bodily harm. In all likelihood, this arrest was unfair. However, according to the description, where the man arrested was yelling and screaming in a more and more aggressive manner in his girlfriends face, it's possible she reasonably feared bodily harm.

Him being a man, or big, should have nothing to do with the decision. The fact that it was pointed out in the arrest report implies the arrest was improper. But my point is that there can be conditions in which one person strikes another first, and is still a victim.
