im going to assume that this is thrown at us by a feminist and as such i willl answer in the following ..... I dont know why you are even bringing this to us , our stance is the same as it always was, annonymity till conviction, this wasnt about rape though , this was torture and physical abuse , and surely feminists should applaud this as afterall , equality and all that .

1) If these women are convicted, they should face the same sentence that a man would receive if he were convicted of torturing a mentally disabled teenage girl in similar fashion.

2) The two accused women should not have their identities published at all until they are convicted in court. This should apply to all people accused of any crime, IMO, no matter what gender they are.

3) The 17 year old should not have had her identity published at all. Not just because of #2 above, but because she's a minor.

Anyways, it kind of shocks me that her full name, photo, and county she lives in is being released to the public like this. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Two problems:

1) Innocent until proven guilty: the names and addresses should not be released unless there is a public hazard (suspects in custody means no hazard, so no name release).

2) 40 years in prison is excessive for this assault. Sentence of 5, 3 served with good behaviour, plus 5 probation. That is justice. Throwing away two young lives because of a single (bad) mistake is not justice, it is cruelty.

I find it a little disgusting. When I first read the article, I recoiled at the description of their crimes. Then I thought about the fact that that was simply what they were accused of - just as the boy could've been influenced by them, so too could the boy have been influenced by his parents or the police or who knows what. If I were present at the scene of the crime I would feel much more comfortable making a judgment, but the only thing I can say for sure is that I'm a little ashamed of assuming their guilt upon reading the article.

I read the girls name and thought "Hey, I remember an Amanda Johnson back in Elementary school, at least they aren't from Wisconsin." Then I read on to "because as Wisconsin's St. Croix County Sheriff's Office stated" and stopped reading. I don't remember what she looked like back then, but it's weird enough. Back to reading.

They should remain anonymous not merely until they are convicted, but until the last avenue of appeal has been exhausted.

This should apply in all cases where the crime has a sexual element to it, since sexual associations make an accusation damaging even when the accused is acquited. In the case referred to in this post, supposing the girls were charged with deprivation of liberty for refusing to let him leave, although that is not specifically a sexual offence, the nature of what they are alleged to have done makes it sexual and should therefore attract a shield of anonymity.

I'm under the impression that we should compare how we feel about releasing these girls' names with releasing the name of a male rape suspect.

If that's the case, this specific article is a bad example. This is a situation where the victim is mentally diminished, there were several witnesses, there is child neglect happening in the background, and the nature of the crime seems to be psychopathic.

If we compare this to the "standard" case of a male accused of raping a female, the "default" scenario is the word of one competent person against that of another, without witnesses.

There is too much emotional bias in this article for the comparison. These girls are already convicted in our minds, so I doubt anybody feels the need to protect their identities. This is different from, say the Duke case from a few years ago.
