So this plan to keep women out of jail is affirmative action for female career criminals, apparently.

It's really quite simple: if a woman deserves to go to jail, find the man nearest to her and put him in jail instead. He should have stopped her, and he should have known better.

If a woman goes to prison, serves her sentence, is let out and makes the decision to reoffend, it's her fault. Nobody else's. Why should they be treated any differently?

This makes perfect sense. Women are equal to men in every way. When a man does something good or bad, he is fully responsible for his actions. When a woman does something bad it's obviously due to something out of her control, but when she does something good obviously every man in the world was trying to prevent it.

How does this do anything but create the mindset that women are inferior to men? It really seems that all these groups fighting for womens rights are only making women seem inferior by doing so...

Personally I think this would be great if it was for both men and women. What bothers me the most about this is that they excuse the women's behaviors.

Meanwhile men aren't seen as having underlying reasons for offenses. When obviously it's true of both sexes.

Regardless, we should try to have rehabilitation and not prisons. Prisons don't change people like rehab.

All of the reforms being suggested are sensible, humane, and economically sound.

It's the part where they are only being applied in the female correctional system that's crazy.

I understand the anger around this issue, but we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that THE BRITS ARE RIGHT to be trying to minimize incarcerations and maximize the community-based services that would keep so many low-level criminals from committing a pattern of offenses. We could use a lot more of that kind of thinking in this country.

I don't see how this can possibly be justified for EVERY female criminal. Does this include people like Rose West?

Arguably some relatively minor crimes might well be better punished through community service or other alternatives to jail time, but these should not be specific to one gender.

That's the issue right there. This isn't a gender issue, it's a drug policy issue. If they want to rehabilitate drug offenders, then rehabilitate both female and male drug offenders. Closing womens' prisons? What would they do with a woman that stabs her husband to death? I'm pretty sure you can't rehabilitate that.

These people looking at prisons and finding sex and gender to be the problem is like a surgeon examining a patient with appendicitis and determining that the best course of action is removing the liver. As an egalitarian and a proponent of prison reform, I find this horribly sexist, idiotic and just straight-up dangerous.

While I agree with prison reform it cannot be a one sided thing. I wouldn't be against starting with the smaller female prison population as a test group but this is advocating discriminatory practices. I do not know about the UK but from my experience in the US the majority of women I know who have gone to jail/prison have been what would be best described as habitual repeat offenders often being arrested 4 or more times for similar offenses and being given probation, fines, and programs to attend where as most male offenders I know may get one chance with fines and probation and after that straight to jail/prison. I only know about 7-8 women who have got locked up and truthfully they were given many chances to learn from their mistakes.
